NOTE: I originally reviewed Jellystone! on 1/8/2023 with a much longer and in-depth review. Unfortunately, due to this website's review length limit, it ended up being taken down.
I posted that same original review to IMDB, but thanks to this site's weird policies on copyright I cannot link it. Just look up "seansohr" on IMDB and you will see it at the top of my reviews on there.
The following is a truncated rewrite for TV Tropes. Thanks for understanding.
I love the original Hanna-Barbera cartoons but this is borderline unwatchable.
Everything that made the originals good: classic slapstick, weird but wonderful plotlines, wacky and memorable characters, etc.
All of that is thrown out the window for this ugly, unfunny Frankenstein's Monster nightmare of a revival.
Basically, C.H. Greenblatt has taken all of the Hanna-Barbera properties, "updated" them for modern audiences (i.e. stripped them of their original charm and wit), changed some of their genders, and put them all together in one universe.
The already limited animation of the original shows looks like a Miyazaki masterpiece compared to the flat, synthetic, almost Flash-animated look of Jellystone. Hanna-Barbera characters and C.H. Greenblatt's art style are not a good combination.
The sharp, witty humor of the oldies has been dumbed down to the dreaded "random = funny" formula. We used to laugh at Yogi's zany picnic-basket stealing schemes. Now, there's no basket stealing; we're just supposed to laugh at him because he's fat and stupid.
I get that it's a kid's show but consider that this show basically takes beloved cartoon icons and infinitely dumbs them down and the flaws of Jellystone become a lot less forgivable.
Plus, me and my 10 year old cousin watched it together and she didn't like it either, saying it was "boring and stupid", then I showed her some of the originals and she loved them, sooooo....
WesternAnimation Mr. Ranger's not gonna like this.... (RE-WRITE)
