FanficRecs Competent writing but basically wish fulfillment
I can say that this fanfic has good writing, no spelling/grammar errors other than an occasional typo, good pacing. It is excellent on the technical level.
However, Harry is undoubtedly a Mary Sue. He basically starts off as the most powerful wizard in existence, and then gets better from there. The good thing is that the main conflict of the story isn't really Harry defeating his enemies, that's already done.
The bad thing is that the main conflict feels very forced. Harry kind of overreacts (IMO) to what is basically being set up on a blind date by all his friends. And that's a problem that gets solved halfway through the story. The rest of the story is basically Harry and Gabrielle crushing their enemies, critics, and competition with ease, all while taking their relationship slowly, even though it's basically a foregone conclusion.
The antagonists of this fanfic are pretty dumb and/or flanderized. You're just waiting for when Harry's going to give them a beatdown, not if he's capable of it. Snape and Malfoy are one-dimensional Harry Haters, to the point where they seem to forget that Harry's capable of steamrolling them magically, financially, or publicly.
Basically, if you're looking for deep plot and character development, look elsewhere. If you just want a fun romp in a story where Harry's the most powerful wizard in the world, as well as one of the richest, and gets to bang the hottest chick in the world, and singlehandedly deliver justice unto all his enemies while barely lifting a finger, give it a read.
FanficRecs Beautifully written.
I can easily say that the writing on this story is in the top 1% of all harry potter fics. Probably much higher than that, actually; it is in my personal top 5 of all harry potter fics *anywhere*.
That isn't to say it doesn't have issues; there is occasionally a bit of telling instead of showing; the romance moves just a touch too fast for my liking;there are a few rough scene translations;the ending comes a bit too quickly.
But you can ignore the rest of that because the story is just that fantastic. Yes, it's lighthearted and relatively low on drama, but what drama it does have it does very well, and I find the contrast of this Harry to the morbid, depressed, useless harries that you so often read about to be a breath of fresh air in a sea of turgidity.
Excellently written, an easy 10/10.
