Fire Emblem

Maybe I’ve just been in a lot of really volatile fandoms - Star Wars, RuneScape, Marvel - but FE, as mentioned, seems tame to me. The only big fights I regularly see are over the quality or lack thereof in Fates, and “WHO WAS RIGHT?” in Three Houses, which are meh to me in comparison.

Definitely understandable; I've certainly mentioned before that one of the reasons why the Fire Emblem fandom is one of the worst I've seen is because I was never really into the Star Wars fandom, since what I have seen of that fandom is pretty bad. And again, as far as I know, the Fire Emblem fandom never drove anyone into nearly committing suicide.

It still was the fandom that taught younger me how much of an asshole some people can be online, and eventually that most online individuals (not limited to the Fire Emblem fandom) aren't versed enough in media literacy and would rather just prefer screaming about how something sucks rather than actually engaging in constructive discussion.

It's not all bad though; I've met a few people in the Fire Emblem fandom that are pretty good when it comes to actual media analysis, and I've had some pretty good conversations with them. And experience has taught me to tune out the assholes more effectively.

Outside of some Old Guard Versus New Blood and bits of 3 Houses discourse yeah I agree that the fanbase is more chill then assumed

Fire Emblem is a series that iterates relatively little, yet somehow has an extremely divided fan base.

There also seems to be an element to it that dislikes that the series is fantasy, and either downplays that part or complains when the fantasy aspects are more prominent.

That's actually a good point. Compared to other franchises Fire Emblem is a series that changes very little game to game (Often to its detriment IMHO) but still manages to be divisive.

Wonder how much of that is "No matter what you change it will cause a schism" and how much is "If change isn't expected to be large, then the small ones will be argued over."

It's a long-running video game series with a very vocal online community. I'd be more surprised if it didn't have an extremely divided fanbase. Heck, the most pleasant video game fanbases I've seen are fanbases for indie games that aren't that big in the first place.

It's not helped that a good portion of online discourse around media in general unfortunately revolves around the "get aggressive with people who don't agree with me and keep shouting to drown them out" mindset, which contributes to an overall more negative atmosphere that breeds these sort of divisions.

New Mystery 20x time: Kris merely adopted the darkness. The assassins were born in it, equipped Longbows in it.

New Mystery is a great games, but chapters 3 and 20x are up there with the worst chapters of the franchise.

The original DS didn't have region lock, did it?

Don't forget 13x. Fog ballistae that can easily 2HKO a trained Marth or Althena, plus Myrms that are fast enough to one-round said trained Marth covering them.

I also personally only see New Mystery as strictly okay. It has almost all the same old-era design problems Shadows of Valentia does, but without the epic story presentation.

Correct, the DS is not region locked.

The 3DS, however, is; though I don't believe that applies to it playing DS games.

Don't you mean Minerva? I get that they're both wyvern-riding princesses and all, but Althena's from FE4.

Yeah, she got dethroned for not being Michalis.

And the story portrays Mr. Cowards fight at the frontlines as the better leader than her because....he's a dude.

And then she gave her crown to Marth for similar reasons presumably.

Talk about FE's silly "Unification good" and "Women strong but not too strong" rhetoric.

Never forget that both female leaders in Three Houses have a hypercompetent sidekick who is a dude and tends to see things that said female leaders miss. Seteth and Hubert of course.

Heck, I think I discussed this with Mad Skillz at Hopes when Hubert talks more than Edelgard when discussing things with Claude over the treaty while Hilda is treated as Claude's arm candy, generally.

Least you've got the Tellius games, which end with all three beorc nations ruled by women, plus Hatari

Now that you mention it, I think Ike is one of the few Fire Emblem protags who doesn't end up ruling over his continent by the end of the game.

That's...actually true in fact I think Robin doesn't take up leadership either.

Pretty sure Robin stays as Chrom's lieutenant.

No, it's supposed to be Athena, the foreign Myrmidon lady with terrible stats who joins during that chapter. I accidentally added an L.

and I had my female Robin marry Chrom.

So Robin can end up ruling over a country.

Yeah Robin certainly has the potential to be a major leader.

Ike continues to be the coolest guy from a sub-series I never played.

It might be because Robin is a player self insert, but IIRC, Queen Robin has the reputation of being the brains of the duo and is regarded as far more competent than her husband by Validar and Aversa.

Which is a very progressive stance from Fire Emblem.

Considering the next game has Queen Mikoto die a few chapters in, all the sisters getting passed over for divine weapons in favor of the brothers, and Azura passing over her throne to give to Corrin.

But I guess Hinoka becomes queen. Only because all her brothers are dead in conquest.

Actually it's notable Valla exists to give Corrin something to do. Hoshido and Nohr never unite as one huh.
