A cool pic wouldn't hurt this article

Um, Why? and How? Super powers would be difficult enough to capture in a image, but that they're temporary without going into Just A Face And A Caption territory?

I can think of a good example that might fit. Nny from Johnny the Homicidal Maniac, when he gets "Head-explody" due to being in heaven (lulz). Because of the extremely violent nature of the power and character EDIT: who is clearly deranged in the image, I don't think it's so jarring to put a caption saying something along the lines of "Yeah...this ain't gonna last long."

So it's borderline JAFAC. I think it might work though. It's obvious from pic that (a) the powers are new, and (b) the character is deranged. The caption just pushes the reader from (b) to (c), the character is not likely to keep the powers for very long.

^^^ No, no image is way better. No article "needs a cool pic". Sometimes they are awesome, though.

^^ It doesn't matter if the caption is inside the picture or below it. The picture should send a complete message without a caption. Captions are for enhancement only.

No. No it's not. Fast Eddie has flat out stated that no image is better than a bad image. Just A Face And A Caption is, by definition, a bad image. Remember, the top section is for explanation, the bottom is for examples.

Ahh, I see. So speech bubbles etc. count too, thanks, that's helpful.

I think Image Pickin' is the hardest part of trying to contribute, for me anyway.

[up] It's also the most friendly, I think. Among some very constructive "argumentation" forums.

(And yeah, that doesn't mean no relying on text, it means no relying on a caption. Speech bubbles tend to be captions. Would the meaning be clear if you didn't speak the language?)

I see nothing in your picture that indicates he has superpowers for a day. Maybe one of the covers from the Superdickery site from the "Jimmy/Lois gets superpowers!" section?

I don't think there are actually all that many tropes that can't be depicted with a good image.

One Superboy possibility (though the cover suggests an aversion, it probably won't come as a surprise that it actually ain't.)

[up][up] Compare [1]. That image is fine. Though I am not sure it is better than no image. Perhaps so.

It might work well together with the one on Contagious Powers.

I suppose the device strapped to the lady pictured is where the temporary part sets in, yes?

Yes, but pretty much every time this happened in a Silver Age Superman comic, it was temporary. A frequent plot device, as catalogued here and here.

Note that I took the "speech bubbles are captions" idea too far. But it isn't utter foolishness.

As in this one for the trope image?

I think it might work, despite a minor technical fault (that there's nothing explicitly saying it's a temporary "for a day" thing.)

But:

  • Lois Lane and Superman are at that level where we can presume everybody knows who they are... and everybody also knows that Lois Lane can't ordinarily "do everything Superman can do."
  • It does say "in this issue"

[up] I think that image is very strong.

"A non super-powered character gets superpowers. However, because Status Quo Is God, those powers won't last long and are strictly a one-shot deal."

When the image is shrunk, will it be obvious that's Lois Lane and not Supergirl? (Pretend you don't know what Supergirl looks like other than being female.)

Shrank it and pumped up the contrast on the text. I won't tell if you won't.

I think either the superboy or superman comic page would work well, possibly the superboy pic a little better. I, at least, kind of get the feeling that the machine hooked up somehow makes her fly, instead of being a life support system and IMO since super powered Loise & Superman is already on the page for Contagious Powers it adds a bit of diversity.
