The Raven was originally about a parrot.

I mean, it makes sense. Parrots don't really come to mind when you think of gothic literature — not to mention that, conveniently enough, corvids are very good at imitating speech.

Somehow, "Quoth the parrot, 'Nevermore'" doesn't have the same ring to it.

To be precise, Poe (said he) thought of a parrot first, then decided a raven would work better. He needed a non-human creature to repeat the "nevermore", because he thought a person would be too unrealistic.
