A few days ago i noticed that Scott changed the goals on his patreon and added only one claiming that if he manages to get 1500$/month he'll be able to make the comic weekly and he is already getting FAR more than that amount because of the NSFW patreon he set up a week ago which as of the time im typing this is making 4000$/month already and rapidly rising in popularity according to Graphtreon.

Im still taking the claim of the comic being made weekly with several grains of salt though for very obvious reasons.

Its not an uncommon move for artists on Patreon. Porn sells, apparently.

If you need 1500 a month just to make 4 comics a month, you are very much overpaid.

That amount would be reasonable for a daily comic. This just seems greedy.

Well, we don't know his story. He could be feeding a coke habit, sure, but this could also be for his grandma's chemo.

Then he should be straightforward about wanting the money for his gran's chemo.

@Sgt Ricko: Like Zeromaeus said Sex Sells A LOT.

@Redness: That or you really need to move somewhere else if the rent and electricity and internet etc are so expensive that you need over 1000 dollars every month

@CEOIII: If it was either of those (Especially one of his relatives dying.) he should say it but as someone who is addicted to coca cola i can tell you that even if i had to money to buy more whenever i wanted i would NOT even manage to spend more than 200-400 euros a month on it because if i could drink that much i'd quickly die.

What's that quote? Anything is worth what it's purchaser will pay for it? If people willingly give him that kind of money that's hardly his fault so long as he meets his obligations.

The point was more that the given goal was rather meager for the amount asked, and if it was for some higher purpose (which no one has proven there is), then he should have been open about it.

As it stands, he is asking 1500$ a month to upload a comic once a week, which is pretty ridiculous.

The only reason i can see is that apperantly he had a divorce (Which was also why it took him so long to make a new comic.) and i think he may have kids too which he needs to raise himself but even then he should be open about it.

And he should also be willing to put in the effort for it. If you want a full salary out of your comic, fine, but show the effort, too. Just scraping by with one comic a week just doesn't cut it.

I mean, that's fine and all, but that's not even an issue here. It looks like people are more in it for the smut they're paying for, given the graph. Oh hey, there should be a comic now, too. That's nice.

That's actually kind of amazing. Its no mystery how to make that patron cash. I feel like an old man. Patreon barely registers on my radar, but its starting to affect so much of the media I consume.

They banned all don't-try-this-in-real-life porn, at least.

He is making whatever people request it seems, and of course what people wanted to see first of all shouldn't come off as a suprise.

On the topic of making comics it is kind of justified that he can't make a comic everyday because he would have to think what the comic should be about and the draw it which would take several hours. I'd still expect 2-3 strips a week to be far more logical for someone who does it as his full time job though.

@Zeromaeus Yeah this is pretty much what's happening.

@Redmess Can you do better ? Can you constantly come up with something new every day ? Can you do it while having to raise children ?

Besides, that's kind of a crappy wage to live on monthly. I have a pretty crappy job, and I make more than $1500 a month. I still have to budget everything and I don't have kids.

Sorry, that was a little caustic to say. But I still think one comic a week is not much work, and the "I don't see YOU do better" argument is not really an argument at all. Other artists do daily comics for years without any problems, so why can't he? Are you suggesting those artists don't have any private time with their children at all because they have a comic to make every day? I find that far fetched.

The question should be, is this a reasonable wage for a weekly comic, then.

Sure. If enough people want to pool their money together for that, then there's no problem.

Besides, most people are only putting forward one or two dollars a month (what Im told is the norm for Patreon). I'd say a weekly comic is worth one or two dollars a month.

It's not 'I don't see you doing any better' it's 'I don't see you making something people are willing to pay for.' I don't actually like this comic that much, I simply don't see what point there is in getting offended by what he wants to charge for it.

Medinoc from France (Before Recorded History)
#950: Apr 12th 2018 at 6:16:58 AM

I think the offended people here are not so much miffed at "If I get a living wage from the Patreon, I quit my job and switch to doing this full-time" and more miffed at the notion that "doing this full-time" only yields one comic a week (especially as graphics-wise, VG Cats is no Girl Geniusnote  or Sleepless Domain).
