The bit where he showed off Doom being played on things that shouldn't be able to always made me think of the quote from Jurassic Park.

Help me. I can't get it out of my head.

Was "Doom on Virtual Boy" real or just a joke? If it's the former, then his comment near the end of his Virtual Boy episode about how it should have had a Doom port is Hilarious in Hindsight. If it's the latter, then that's a pretty humorous callback.

Non-AVGN: Crazy Animated Scenes:

EDIT: I hate to say "so-and-so did it first", but... yeah, most of these were already covered by The Nostalgia Critic well over a decade ago.

A tad disappointed he didn't include the M.C. Escher-style chase sequence from The Thief And The Cobbler.

New AVGN episode: Garfield games!

"A Week With Garfield" is one of the absolute worst licensed games ever made, and I've waited a long time for The Nerd to review it.

For comparison's sake, here is the James & Mike Mondays where they played it:

Maybe it's due to YouTube's new policies - they've been on a video demonetizing spree recently.

So, not like there were as many to choose from this year, but what was your favorite AVGN in 2022?

For me, while Doom was probably the best one overall- I'm a sucker for "comparing different versions of the same game" episodes (see Mortal Kombat Ports), it lost some points for having some repeat material from earlier episodes.

So I'm gonna go with either Purr Pals (because cat lover) or Garfield (for the return of Bugs Bunny and the extended Dolled-Up Installment part). With an honorable mention to The Last Ninja because it was (I assume) the first post-Screenwave AVGN in a long time, so it felt special. Contra was similar, obviously drawing on James's own experiences with the game so it felt more personal, but it wasn't the funniest episode and like Doom, it had some repeat stuff from his Contra Memories video.

Hudson Hawk was the weakest, despite the film clips.

Looking forward to seeing what he has planned for 2023!

Wait, so James isn't a part of Screenwave anymore?

I should clarify. My impression is that, after 2021's Monster Madness controversy and long-standing criticism from certain factions of the fanbase that the Screenwave team was entirely responsible for the recent AVGN episodes (remember that video where he addressed that criticism and had to debunk the rumor that he was merely reading a script that the Screenwave team wrote entirely?), James opted for a more back-to-basics, more hands-on approach to the Nerd. I'm sure the Screenwave team still edits the episodes and assists with shoots, but I mean he was more exclusively involved in writing the scripts than in the last couple years. Which is likely why we got less of them this year.

Notice how there have been a lot more "James addresses the audience as himself" videos this year, which aren't as time-consuming to write or shoot as an AVGN, but still allow him to get his own views out there. And most of those are about movies, which James is more passionate about than games, so it's pretty obvious he wrote those himself.

Again, this could all be inaccurate but that's the impression I got, given recent events/trends.
