I think it's somewhat telling that the difference between the best and worst of the three comics in that poll was 4.2%, and the difference between second and third was just .3%. There just isn't one of those that people didn't want to see.

Or improperly balanced dice.

For anyone interested in statics, guess how many time you would have to role three evenly weighted dice with six sequentially numbered sides just to have a 50% or greater chance of all three being ones. Answer: 150

[up]Well, I said "50% or more" because that number has a chance slightly higher than 50% while one less roll is slightly lower. There is no real number of die rolls that have exactly a 50% chance of getting all ones.

The way I read it, he didn't say he was always rolling all ones though, he said every roll had a 1 in it. If so, 3d6 will produce one or more 1s 42% of the time.

Well, isn't three ones as likely as three sixes, or a one, two, and a three, or any other combination of three six sided die rolls?

[up][up]Of course, just six randomly chosen rolls only have about a .6% chance of all having ones in them.

Though I don't think he meant that, or Tycho wouldn't be saying "once" and "twice", which I figured meant he got a really bad roll twice in one sitting.

[up]If the same numbers in different "order" are considered different "combinations", yes.

If order doesn't matter, every combination of three different numbers has a 6/216 chance of happening, every combination of a pair and a second number has a 3/216 chance of happening, and every triple roll has a 1/216 chance of happening.

Either way, I don't see what you're getting at though.

Three ones, as a permutation, is just as likely as any other permutation. Your chances of rolling a one, and a one, and a one, are the same as your chances of rolling a three, then a four, then a five. However, there are more combinations that involve a three, a four, and a five than there are combinations that involve three ones. In other words, the only way to roll three ones is (1, 1, 1), which is a 1/216 chance, whereas you can roll a three, a four, and a five by rolling any of (3, 4, 5), (3, 5, 4), (4, 3, 5), (4, 5, 3), (5, 3, 4), and (5, 4, 3), making it a 6/216 chance, or 1/36.
