Courtesy Link Yes, it's the most accurate quzi ever for finding out your alignment. Me, I'm a Radical Libertarian. This quiz is totally mathematical.

  • Spending ECONOMIC Government at all levels takes in between 1/3 and 1/2 the national income. Much of this money is given right back to the taxpayers as services that could be purchased on the open market.
    • YES!! Taxation is theft! Government should be run from voluntary contributions and user fees only.
  • Censorship PERSONAL Currently the FCC has the power to grant or withhold broadcast licenses on the basis of content. This constitutes mild censorship.
    • No! Any government censorship is intolerable. Give broadcasters the same freedoms of expression enjoyed by publishers of books and magazines — including how much sex, violence and crude language.
  • Subsidies ECONOMIC The government has spent billions and consumers billions more to help out certain favored industries such as farms, textile mills, steel companies and so on.
    • NO! Giving taxpayer money to favored industries is theft, pure and simple! Eliminate all subsidies, quotas and protective tariffs.
  • Sex PERSONAL A few years ago President Clinton got caught doing "deviant" sex with a woman not his wife. He claimed this was a private matter — to much applause. Yet many states do consider it a public matter. Sex outside of marriage is illegal. In many states, the "deviant" acts the President and Ms. Lewinsky performed are illegal even within marriage.
    • NO! The government has no right to regulate sex between consenting adults. Take all such laws off the books, including laws against prostitution.
  • Guns ECONOMIC Once upon a time, gun ownership was a constitutional right, on par with freedom of speech. Today, guns are registered, and you are considered unfit to own a gun until proven fit. In some cities, gun ownership requires a very hard-to-get permit.
    • YES! Private MILITARY arms are the last bastion against tyranny. (And gun registration is a dangerous slippery slope)
  • Drugs PERSONAL The War on Drugs has filled our prisons, led to many violent deaths, and costs the government much potential tax revenue. The Bill of Rights has been partly suspended in the fight. On the other hand drug abuse is a serious problem.
    • No! Legalize all recreational drugs for adult use. (What you take is none of the government's business as long as you handle your "high" responsibly.)
  • Education ECONOMIC Public education in the U.S. is an example of democratic socialism. As such, it requires broad consensus over what should be taught and how. However, we live in a diverse society, with many different ideals over what should be taught, especially regarding morals and religion.
    • YES! Complete separation of education and state. (Let churches and other charities educate the poor.)
  • Immigration PERSONAL Millions of people want to come to the United States for a better job. However, many fear that immigrants lower wages for "natives" and dilute our culture. Currently, the government requires proof of legal residence to get a job, and there are calls for a national ID. What should we do?
    • Immigrants are a blessing to this country. Open the gates! Just require that they pay their own way.
  • Workplace ECONOMIC The federal government is making more and more demands on employers to favor certain groups. Firing workers puts employers at great risk of very expensive lawsuits. With harassment laws, freedoms of speech and expression in the workplace are being severely curtailed in the name of Civil Rights.
    • NO! Hiring and working should be purely voluntary activities. (The marketplace will punish discriminators.)
  • Draft PERSONAL The U.S. is the only remaining superpower. With military spending only 20% of the federal budget, can we not afford to pay military personnel a market wage?
    • The draft is slavery and therefore morally unacceptable. A country that needs a draft to defend itself deserves to lose.
  • Retirement ECONOMIC Social Security was a great deal for those who got in at the beginning but is a rotten deal for those getting in late (Generation X).
    • YES! Complete separation of retirement and state. Let people plan their own retirement.

Hmm.

I think I'm going to end up a centrist. That said, the wording of the questions seems to lean toward the small-government conservative side. I mean...

The federal government is making more and more demands on employers to favor certain groups. Firing workers puts employers at great risk of very expensive lawsuits. With harassment laws, freedoms of speech and expression in the workplace are being severely curtailed in the name of Civil Rights.
I thought that question was supposed to address unionization and labor groups, not civil rights. That's certainly a strange thing to mention, and it raises some red flags. There are other examples, but this is probably the most prominent.

Anyway, here are my answers:

  • Should the size of government be significantly reduced (over a period of time)? No. Government is about the right size.
  • Should the FCC regulate the content of broadcast television? Yes. The current level of FCC power is about right.
  • Should the government help certain "important" industries using subsidies, quotas, and/or tariffs? Some. The current amount of support for distressed industries is about right.
  • Should the government have laws regulating sex between consenting adults? Should they be enforced? No. Sodomy and fornication laws are unenforceable and obsolete. Take them off the books.
  • Should the Second Amendment stay in force? OK, but require registration and background checks.
  • Should the War on Drugs continue? No. Legalize the safer drugs such as marijuana. Tax and regulate them like liquor.
    • Note: Some addictive substances are indeed very dangerous, and should still be banned. Meth is an example. The "No" here doesn't quite capture my whole answer.
  • Should the public schools be privatized? No. We need continued government ownership of schools. (Reform is possible.)
    • Note: By "continued government ownership" I mean to say that education ought to be a public good rather than a private one. Today's advanced society pretty much requires that people understand a number of basic concepts about the world, in order to make reasonably informed decisions about important issues.
  • Is illegal immigration a serious problem? Does it justify the cost and lost rights necessary to keep people out? I'm leaving this blank. Illegal immigration is a serious problem. Institute a national ID for everyone.
    • Note: However, I'm not saying to deport illegal immigrants. I just kinda like the national ID system. In general I think the system currently needs better monitoring rather than more patrolling.
  • Should the government continue to regulate employment relations in the name of Civil Rights? I'm leaving this blank, as the options are...rather strange. Yes. About what it is now. (Sure, some of the lawsuits are ridiculous, but it takes dire threats to bring certain employers into line.)
    • Cut the crap of the stuff in the parentheses. The system has problems, but I don't see a significant change in either direction making things any better.
  • Should military service be voluntary, or should there be a draft? No draft now, but keep draft registration.
    • What does their quip—"The U.S. is the only remaining superpower. With military spending only 20% of the federal budget, can we not afford to pay military personnel a market wage?"—have to do with the question and choices?
  • Should Social Security be phased out? NO! Raise taxes as necessary when the baby boomers retire.
    • "Some. Ramp up the retirement age so the average number of years for receiving government checks is brought back down to 5." <— what is it now?
    • "Yes. Replace Social Security with a purely aged-based MINIMUM income (comparable to current minimum Social Security payouts) funded out of general revenues." <— how exactly will is this different? what is meant by "current minimum Social Security payouts"?

Importance: Spending 3, Censorship 2, Subsidies 3, Sex 1, Guns 2, Drugs 2, Education 5, Immigration 3, Workplace null 3, Draft 2, Retirement 3.

Comments before I submit:

  • No, you can't skip questions. This kinda sucks.
  • I'm surprised at the lack of foreign policy questions, other than the immigration issue which is partly a domestic policy question as well.

Stopped taking this seriously after reading

The Libertarian Party has a cute little test that purports to divide American politics into four quadrants. There's the economic dimension (where libertarians ally with conservatives) and the social dimension (where libertarians ally with liberals).

I think the diagram is seriously misleading, because visually it gives equal importance to both dimensions. And when the rubber hits the road, libertarians almost always go with the economic dimension.

'Left Leaning Freedom Lover'

It boils down to saying I'm a moderate libertarian and noting that's like calling a liberal a moderate communist. This is generally where I tend to score on political quizzes like this; I basically think the government should value efficiency and let people do as they like.

I have issues with some of the questions asked and didn't really get to give the answers I wanted to frequently.

I quite enjoy the current size of government.

Perhaps because I don't take things that the government does—as well as things that the government doesn't do—for granted.

TAKE THAT, YOU SMALL-MINDED SMALL-GOVERNMENT SUCKERS!

Incidentally, I don't see many people asking for more government. I usually only see people talking about having less government. Hence the above statement.

I'm fine with the size of the government. Hell, I'd like some aspects to be bigger. I think it's needlessly inefficient though. I put whatever answer was closest to that.

IJBM: People making such a huge fuss about the size of government, without actually discussing exactly what it does, and how it does it.

I would love to talk productively about how to streamline government services to make them more effective and efficient. I would also love to talk productively about what services a government should provide, and in what amounts.

However, blanket statements about government being at an inappropriate size are rather useless.

Honestly I've given up on these tests permanently. It was amusing the first couple of times I noticed contrarian results coming from all of them, but now I'm pretty sure what I think doesn't matter politically as much as what I do.

And what I do is vote Green, because someone has to.
