That sounds pretentious and elitist.
It is. They are. They don't care.

when I said Lyrics I meant vocals. I just have a hard time getting over people screaming, or growling etc. so it makes it far less enjoyable to listen to.

If I'm not going to understand the lyrics, I'd rather have an instrumental.
As a rough guesstimate, Instrumental metal makes up about 0.72% of all metal bands. I'm willing to bet that an even smaller percentage of black/death bands are instrumental.

My point being that while it is probably possible to find clean vox/instrumental extreme metal, you'll still be missing out on about 99% of what those genres have to offer.

I don't mind growling vocals, in fact, I like them when they are appropriate, a good mix of clear and growling vocals gets a great effect when pulled off right. The thing that I don't like about Black/Death metal is that they are too loud and convoluted... for similar reasons I don't like Noise Music in general.

I don't know any solely instrumental metal bands off the top of my head, but a lot of metal bands have done instrumental tracks or songs with extended instrumental breaks. They tend to be good.

I don't actually mind harsh sounds or anything like that. Probably if I were more accustomed to that kind of metal I wouldn't mind those vocals so much. But generally speaking, I just find such vocals boring and annoying. I think the vocal equivalent to a distorted guitar ought to be electronically distorted singing, not unmelodic droning or screaming.

Does Nine Inch Nails go in this thread?
Depends who you ask. If you were to ask me: no. Industrial Metal is a tricky subgenre.

I'm more into the Power Metal scene personally, which is also a tricky subgenre. I love bands like Blind Guardian, Steel Attack, Kamelot, Rhapsody, Iced Earth, Sonata Arctica, and of course Helloween.

Which isn't to say I don't love non-Power Metal. Maiden shall forever be my favorite band. I also love Judas Priest, Metallica, Alice Cooper (yeah, this'll probably stat a fight about whether or not he's metal) Running Wild, and a bunch of others.

I listen to metal somewhat infrequently. When I do, I tend to prefer power/symphonic metal.

Please don't tell me there's still shitstorms about Metallica for whatever reason.

I only first got into them through Guitar Hero, I'm going to be getting Master of Puppets from the library and I don't want people's petty disappointments and flame wars from soiling my experience.

METALLICA IN EXTREMO CRUSH 40 DISTURBED RAMMSTEIN

In no particular order, these are among my favorites. BTW, I can't listen to Disturbed's "Indestructible" without remembering the gendo pose. That's stupid, but true.

I'd dare to say it's the most successful metal band, but then I'd have to search for statistical data.

You'd have to name more than one band for me to accuse you of untr00ness.

Edit: I was also being satirical. I seem to be the only person in this thread capable of supplying RAAAAGEEEEEE, so I felt it appropriate to chug some hate-o-rade.
