I'm curious, is Archie Comics as a company still going? I've barely heard anything from them ever since they did the reboot of the Archie gang in 2015.

The main Archie book has been on hiatus for like two years now, all of their content seems to be digests with one new story and random alternate universe tales.

So, with Archie Sonic, what moments do you consider to be a Gut Punch moment for the comic?

The slap. All day, every day.

As for Archie being on hiatus, the reboot largely failed and Archie Sonic was their major cash cow in print. I don't think 'killing' old-school Archie helped any either, even when they shrugged it off later.

I consider Sally turning into Mecha Sally to be a huge gut punch.

In regards to Archie going on hiatus, I figured that things went downhill for Archie when they lost the rights to Sonic the Hedgehog.

Game Apologist started discussing about Shard, the Metal Sonic who turned good.

I imagine that losing Sega caused them to lose the confidence of a lot of companies they were doing comics for. That, plus the Penders lawsuit.

I think that Scrapnik Mecha Sonic in IDW comics was based on two Archie Sonic characters Shard the Metal Sonic and Captain Metal.

That was a very sad ending to Shard's story.

Yeah, it seemed like ever since Archie lost the rights to the Sonic the Hedgehog comics, they haven't been doing well lately.

So, I've been thinking about how the Archie Sonic Comics had more freedom to write the characters than the IDW comics did. Do you think there will be a day where SEGA will ever let the writers write the characters in the IDW comics more freely?

I'm kind of glad they don't, seeing as Archie became a dire mixture of edge and soap opera

They allowed the STC team to write more freely but a rumour has it that it was because Sega stopped caring about the comic. I can't see Sega letting IDW make major changes to important characters such as changing Metal Sonic into an army of Metal Sonics like the STC team and Archie team did.

I really disliked making Metal Sonic into an army TBH.

I will admit that there were some odd moments that happened in the Archie Sonic comics before issue 160, like how Sonic was dating Sally, Fiona, Mina and Bunnie at the same time (although I'm not too sure about Bunnie) and the confusing lore of the echidna race.

Thought that was Evil Sonic pretending to be Sonic?

Oh yeah, there was an arc where Evil Sonic was posing as Sonic and started hitting on all the girls in Knothole. But, I thought there was an arc where Sonic was dating Bunnie (I can't remember which arc it was. Was it the arc where Bunnie got abducted by the alien race or something like that)? I don't know, things got confusing before issue 160.

Bunnie kissed the real Sonic once but it was in thanks for saving her.

Oh okay. I was wondering about that moment. It's been so long since I last read the Archie Comics.

I kind of had a special fondness for the pre issue 160 comics. I really like the stories, the craziness and the art. It reminds me of a simpler time in Sonic's history. It really makes me wonder what would have happened if Penders and by extension Archie hadn't messed things up? I really liked how SATAM, Archie, Underground, Boom and even Sonic X tried to be their own thing instead of just a straight up adaptation of the games. It really felt unique, the characters made sense to me considering their environment and there was something of a Rogues Gallery as opposed to just Dr. Eggman and the people who work for him. I really miss those days but I guess the change was bound to happen sooner or later.
