When I was in school this year, I found a forum for professors and found out the really, really hard way that as a freshman, you have to convince the people who give you grades that you deserve to be there, you deserve to have been born and that you don't belong in anyone's humiliation fantasies, much less any gigantic forum's. Not so different. Whatever we do, falling into that is no good. Everyone just do their best, okay? (Not butthurt, as I get very nice grades; just less naive.)

And I can get into NC-17 rated movies on my own. Gasp.

Some writing.

I much prefer to be 'exemplary', or possibly 'keen'. I will, however, settle for 'utter twat'.

@Meta Four: The most important thing to remember when teaching your first class is that you know more than the students. The second thing to remember is to check your fly and blow your nose before you go to class. You should know that students lie. A lot. Turn up your bullshit detector. And last thing, they all think that rules have exceptions and they are it. Nice guys don't finish nice. (PS I am a pretty good professor with high student approval ratings, discipline doesn't make them mad, being unfair makes them mad.)

@Janitor: I laughed out loud at the 'you smell like a goat' story and congrats about the brilliant idea/out of town mystique thing.

@Fast Eddie: Thank you for making this thread.

I much prefer to be 'exemplary', or possibly 'keen'. I will, however, settle for 'utter twat'.

For clarification: Will you be more or less of a twat when you finally get one?

Miijhal Since: Jul, 2011
#65: Aug 25th 2009 at 6:46:44 PM

There is a difference between owning and being a twat. The former involves sexual organs. The latter involves uttering phrases such as 'life is like a football'.

Matrix Since: Jan, 2001
#66: Aug 25th 2009 at 6:48:06 PM

...Did you actually say that phrase?

No, Matrix, the lame stuff goes elsewhere.

On the topic of student abuse ...

They tell you that this abuse works. I'm not sure it does, in every field. All of my fellow maths geeks seemed to do better with encouragement.

I would like to be a good teacher to my students. I really hope I turn out to be.

I want to be encouraging and helpful and friendly, but still able to command the respect of the youngins.

I did not expect Fast Eddie to be the kind of person to randomly call someone "sweetie". Janitor, maybe.

This "faculty lot" you speak of sounds like a place of great power...

I think Fast Eddie was being a bitch with that 'sweetie'. He can be like that. No social skills. Okay, that is not true. He has some social skills.

Actually, he is completely charming in real life.

That has nothing to do with what we were talking about. We are being all jokey about how to treat beginners.

I don't know how it is in the maths. In the biosciences, you need to chase off the ones who think they are smarter than they actually are. You really do.

@Zyxzy: Thank god I am charming and witty, then.

The only problem is that I'm going to be a foreign language teacher and when I discuss languages I tend to ramble about things nobody but me and other language geeks give a rat's ass about.
