Yeah, it'd be quite a drive, an epic journey of two or three days, but I do like long road trips.
Though I wonder if it might be more economical to go by train?

Feedback Of Heteronormative Gender Stereotypes in AnimeLooks to me like it's just upwards of 600 miles. Wouldn't be hard to do it in a day, but you wouldn't want to round-trip it.
Edit: @AOD - Well, assuming you have a car that gets, let's say, 25 miles to the gallon, that's about 50 gallons of gas, rounding up. What's it cost down there these days? If Amtrak charges the same average train fares on the West Coast that they do on the East, I'd guess a round-trip train ticket would be around $200.

the dice are loaded, the deck is stacked, the game itself will hold you backI wouldn't want to drive 600 miles in a day. That would be insane! Last year my family and a few friends all drove up to Eureka for a visit to Redwood National Park and it took most of the day, and that was more than enough sitting in the car for me! The return on the following day was longer because we took the coastal route for a bit of a scenic ride.
Lull: $3 a gallon or thereabouts.

Feedback Of Heteronormative Gender Stereotypes in AnimeIt could be done if you switched drivers every 4 hours or so.
I'm used to doing 750-1000 miles in a day on my longer road trips, so I suppose it's a matter of personal taste Oh, yeah, the other thing to keep in mind about a train trip is that you could work on a laptop or something instead of paying attention to the road, so you have to factor in what you estimate the value of your time as.
Personally, if I lived in the Bay Area, I'd probably go by train, unless it's very inconvenient or expensive.
Edit: @AOD again - depending on when you travel (go for off-peak, and that sort of thing) you could probably get a train ticket for about as much as gas would cost or slightly more. Unless you had a very fuel-efficient car. I like trains 'cos I can read or write rather than watching the road ahead of me.
Oh yeah, and that ticket price is a total guess. I traveled by train a lot on the East Coast, but I don't know what similar trips cost on the West.

Nothing but pine trees for miles. *

online since 1993 | huge retrocomputing and TV nerd | lee4hmz.info (under construction) | heapershangout.comLooking at the Amtrak fare prices, it's $217 for a round trip.
Not bad, actually. If it's timed for the low season, it becomes even more affordable.
If I were to go to Portland with some of my fellow Bay Area tropers, it would take us 17 hours to arrive. Fairly reasonable, and I probably would prefer to take the train to use my laptop and the like.

Spoiler bookmarklet for iPhone and iPod touchHave I mentioned Portland has a rep for quality booze?
It's true, by the way.
Any Trope Meet we have here will have to include a crusade to Ground Kontrol. Booze and arcade games all in one go. This is awesome, yes?
You know, even if I'm not looking for apartments just yet, fuck it. I will fly to Portland specifically to attend this.
"Booze and arcade games" sold me. Plus I have a ridiculous quantity of frequent flier miles, so the plane ticket wouldn't have to cost me anything.
the dice are loaded, the deck is stacked, the game itself will hold you backIt's in NW, so it's a short walk from Union Station. That is, if the Bay Area contingent is taking Amtrak.
Man, you guys make me wish I were actually allowed to do things. If I can't ride a bike unattended around town, I highly doubt that going into Oregon to meet some people I know from the internet would fly. Oh well, someday we can get one together a bit further north. *
Holy crap.
Paranoid parents suck, eh?
Jesus Christ, Zeta, how old are you? Seriously, parents should not do that if you're, like, over 18.

"We live once, with a meaningless existence, and life is all that there is. There are no gods or devils watching over us. But we must act moral and for the greater good none the less." -A view of mine on life.So. After talking with [AOD] over PM, it looks like he won't be able to make it. There's not going to be a Bay Area contingent this time around.
That's too bad. I totally figured out a way that I could make it down there, too. I think if I say I'm working in the morning, then hanging out with friends/going to a movie, I can probably fill up my suspicious absence for a day. And on Vent, we tried to figure out a way Matrix could go, by meeting up with me and johnadreams in Seattle. We don't know if he can pay for it, though.
Actually, he can meet you in Everett. (That's closer to where you're at, right?)
Yeah, it's closer. Doesn't really matter either way, since we'll have to pass through both anyway.
It's a long drive from the Bay Area to Portland, though; not something you can drive to in the morning, hang out for the afternoon, and drive back at night. You'd need to arrange a place to sleep. Also, with gas prices the way they are, it'd only be economical if three or more people were going. So, if you can, bring everyone you can clown-car in there.
