Sorry if there was a discussion I couldn't find, but for example lists is there a standard for something like:

I recall one of the mods calling it as bad as a ZCE, and the navigation bar should be doing the work, but don't know if there was a conclusion.

I've never personally considered these things ZCE since they aren't actually trying to be examples, just helpful navigation tools. Otherwise I'm kinda apathetic about them since I don't think they cause harm, but they also aren't that necessary.

I suppose, this keeps tropers, especially new ones, who didn't realize there was a navigation bar, from adding examples of a trope that has its own page.

Navigation bars can get cluttered and not every page split has a dedicated icon. I think a lot of people enjoy the Wiki Walk and "stumbling" upon such pages, whereas the subpage tabs are more for people actively looking for such information.

That said, a redirect should make some effort to resemble formatting of other examples. "Has a page here" feels like a ZCE while "Space is scary, so Star Trek has a separate page for it all" is more pleasant.

Do you not know that in the service one must always choose the lesser of two weevils!

I personally think it's redundant and should be removed. If people have a difficult time finding or using the subpage headers then that's a UX issue that should be fixed directly.

As far as new tropers adding examples when there's a subpage, a simple solution would be to keep track of every subpage that a work has. Then show some kind of warning on screen if someone tries to add the corresponding WikiWord to the main page.

My biggest issue is that it's not consistently done. Which is actually way worse UX. If it's a good practice for the wiki, putting it in the example list for every subpage should be automated. If it's bad practice, then there should be a cleanup project to remove it entirely.

A lot of popular works have a lot of subpages, though, and most trope subpages are tucked under the More drop-down, at least on mobile. And if the trope list is split alphabetically, under current practice the subpage isn't on the subpage bar because the work is the namespace and the page name is something like "Tropes A-L".

A commented-out note could alert editors without changing the public-facing content, but a lurker might see the absence of a trope in the trope list and assume there aren't any examples or that we missed them, not that they had to be exiled to their own page, if they just glossed over the subpage header.
