Content Violations Review: Fanfic.PAW Patrol Outside The Missions

Since people in the Content Policy Discussions thread suggested this be flagged, here it is:

There is a work I was curious about: PAW Patrol: Outside the Missions. This is a PAW Patrol fanfic that has a very ill-formatted page, so I was looking into this fanfic to try and fix it, but after reading some chapters I'm more worried about it. Most of the chapters are just PG-PG 13 with some mild content but nothing violating. However, the chapter "Experimenting" has a scene with Rex and Jura (who is an OC) touching each others penises and they are described to get sexual pleasure from this action. "Promises Kept" is a followup where again the same action occurs. There's also the arc with Skye checking out adult library books and thus making the other pups uncomfortable with inappropriate and sexual comments. She is eventually told that masturbation is a way to solve her sexual feelings. Lastly "Ryder's Fear" has both Rocky (although his is for non sexual purposes and simply mere enjoyment) and Chase (due to wanting to be close to Skye) masturbating as well.

The reason why I'm unsure is that the other chapters in the fanfic I don't feel are violating, but these one I feel are since the PAW patrol pups are considered children in both their original show (as they are all voiced by child actors and have single digit ages) and in this fanfic (as Turbot specifically states that Rex and Jura are too young to engage in this actions, Skye bypasses the adult section restrictions by claiming pup's don't count as children, and Skye's sexual thoughts are specifically stated to be seen as unnatural for her age)

At the very least, cut the chapters with sexual content.

So two thoughts. 1) Are the NSFW chapters obvious pedo-pandering or could they be considered a realistic if lighthearted look at teenagers discovering their sexualies.

2)Given they're called "chapters" even if each is a separate FF.net upload, can we justify cutting only certain ones instead of nuking the entire page? Generally this selectivity is reserved for OV As and such things that aren't part of the main series of the work.

1) The issue is that the pups might be preteens, not normal teens, and the content policy is much stricter with works that involve them in sexual acts.

2) Who decided that criteria? If the paedopandering is minor, like one episode out of 20, I don't think it's problematic to have a TV Tropes page on the rest that don't violate the policy.

2: It's been the consensus whenever we dealt with that situation. Don't Meddle with My Daughter! and Fate/kaleid liner PRISMA☆ILLYA are the examples that come to mind.

That's about the size of it.

With that said, let's cut this puppy, he's old enough for it.

With Prisma Illya the objectionable content was an detached OVA rather than one of the main 12 or whatever episodes the viewer is expected to watch in order. My understanding is that is what allowed the page to remain mostly untouched, and that if say episode 4 of season 2 were to consist mostly of pointless leering at girls in pools we would have been obligated to cease troping the entire season if not the entire series.

With Outside The Missions most stories have an ordinal number that suggests they're part of a direct series.

Alright, here's a rundown based on what OP brought up:

• "Experimenting": Likely the most explicit chapter. Rex and Jura stimulate each others' genitals for sexual pleasure, and not much else. It does seem to be (poorly-written) smut rather than anything serious.

• "Promises Kept": The same occurs, but with far less detail. The two describe what they plan to do to each other, before the actual sex scene is hidden behind the phrasing "40 minutes of intimacy".

• Skye arc: OP didn't state what chapters this occurs in, but they appear to be "Doing the Uncomfortable" and "When You Play With Fire". From a quick glance over the chapters: Skye is said to be checking out "adult books"; this is presumably pornography, but it's never explicitly stated. Unlike the aforementioned stories/chapters, there appears to be little detail given regarding the sexual topics, so I'm uncertain if this was meant to be titillating or just a sloppy attempt at drama.

• "Ryder's Fear": A multi-chapter section. The first describes Rocky masturbating, but with little detail ("There he was, on his back. He couldn't see his paws, but from the movement of his legs, he could tell that he was frustratedly rubbing something out of sight"). The third chapter has this discussed in detail, with him saying that it "gives [him] a relaxing feeling that really helps [him] get to sleep". Despite the greater focus placed on the act in this chapter, the language is still rather simplistic. Chase masturbating is not described in detail, but Chapter 4 is somewhat of a repeat of the previous chapter but with Chase in-focus. As OP said, Chase claims he does it to feel close to Skye. Like the Skye arc, the sexual context isn't described in detail, so I'm unsure if this is smut or just drama.

"Experimenting" and "Promises Kept" seem to be of greatest concern here, but it's worth noting that both are quite short, with the latter being a short section of an already-short chapter. As the fic as a whole appears to be quite lengthy, we can simply avoid discussing these two if needed. (The page in its current state doesn't describe either anyways; the latter isn't even in the list of stories provided.)

Cut these two chapters only. Overall doesn't sound that paedopandering, but implicit sex with these pups is a no-no.

Only cut "Experiments" and "Promises Kept".

The adult books that Skye checked out aren't pornography, but do contain sexual content like Game of Thrones and 50 Shades (though they are given dog themed names). One of the dog pun names could possibly based on a pornographic book since I didn't understand all the references. In the chapter "I Just Don't Want to See You Get Hurt", Skye says she "wants to have her way" with Chase and later elaborates it means she wants to mate with him. "Hiccups in Teamwork" ends with Marshall and Everest kissing, and Skye asks if they are "going to..." while making gestures (implying sex), for which she gets called out for. I think it's more so played for drama, although I think the repeated references to masturbating might be some sort of Author Appeal or fetish though since whenever sexual content occurs in the story it always ends with the characters masturbating, there are no other types of sex (at least actually done). Ditto to characters calling a penis its proper name, the author seems to like that as well.

What you said is true, but I'm not sure if it violates the policy. It's rather creepy, but it seemingly doesn't go beyond a brief reference to intercourse. Children kissing isn't much; Puppy Love and Toy Ship are a thing, after all.

I still think prohibiting only "Experiments" and "Promises Kept" (which, as I already said, aren't even discussed on the article) is the best course of action here, unless any other concerns are raised.

Yeah the kissing is not an issue, I just mentioned it to give context to Skye's comments. That being said the other issue with the page is that it's not very well written and is filled with misuse and ZC Es. (there were some examples that technically referenced the "Experimenting" chapter but they got cut due to ZCE or misuse) I'm pretty sure the page was created by the writer of the fanfic (which is allowed I'm just pointing it out) who hasn't posted since 2022, and this fanfic isn't so popular so no one else really edited it asides from wick checks. I'd try fixing the page but honestly even ignoring the inappropriate content this fanfic is not very enjoyable to go through, as you mentioned the writing can be sloppy and confusing which makes it hard to follow.

Cut the two stories that are primarily porn. The chapters that deal with characters having precocious sexuality seem to be for the sake of coming of age drama, so I think it's okay. It's hard to tell if it's meant to be titillating given the characters are just dogs, but the way it's written sounds like an attempt at drama. I'm okay keeping these stories separate since that's how they're uploaded (though that could be the author not knowing how FF.net works).

That said the page is in such poor quality it may end up being cut on ZCE eventually.

I cut any tropes referencing those 2 chapters and any mentions of those. I also cut the Accidental Pervert entry but not for violating any rules but because based on what I read it's misuse since Skye is not being accidental. I'd PM the author to help clean up the page but his account hasn't posted since 2022 so unlikely to get any help there. He does seem active on Reddit though, as while looking for this fanfic I saw he had hundreds (not even exaggerating) of posts to the PAW Patrol subreddit about his fanfic (which typically don't get much traction due to the subreddit being small and the fanfic not being very popular but still a shocking amount)

I’d say cut those chapters as well.

Since it seems everyone is agreement that those 2 chapters should be cut, I feel like that it's safe to close the thread now, and I'll cut the content from those 2. The pages has a LOT of other issues but since they don't relate to the policy I'll discuss those elsewhere.

Cut only the two chapters.

Yeah it's the 2 chapters, I could see the page getting cut in the future but that's more so because of poor quality than content.
