The description for Little Hero, Big War says the trope is mostly (but not always) used in fantasy, and all of the examples generally seem to be fantasy or sci-fi settings involving fictional wars. However, the trope would seemingly apply just as well to any work of historical fiction set while a big war was going on where the protagonist is not a participant in the war or a major political player. Does it apply to real life wars, and if it doesn't, should the page be edited to make clear that it doesn't?

I think the description is mostly accurate, but rather misleading. And with an unsuited quote.

The fact is that if a story is making any attempt at historical plausibility, unless it's a fictionalised biography of major leaders or alt-history of some sort, this approach is basically enforced. You can't have your own hero who leads the forces to victory over the Axis because we know that's not what happened. Whereas in fantasy and the pulpier sort of space opera it's common for the small group of main characters to decide a massive war between them, so when a story goes for a more grounded approach it's a noticeable writing choice (i.e., a trope). But the description could explain this better.

Stories don't tell us monsters exist; we knew that already. They show us that monsters can be trademarked and milked for years.
