Complaining About Shows You Don’t Like: Question?

So there used to be a Darth Wiki page for complaining about shows you personally didn’t like and think it was the worst ever. However that eventually got removed due to “drama” and “flame wars”.

However, the Sugar Wiki page all for gushing about shoes you love and think it’s LITERALLY THE BEST is still up? I don’t get it. It seems unfair to allow one thing but not allow the other? Flame wars? Get better moderation. The Darth Page got removed when TV Tropes wasn’t as big as it is now so I’m pretty sure with better mods, they could handle it.

Also, no one ever uses the “Review” section on TV Tropes so that’s an awful recommendation.

  1. People use the reviews all the time. There's new ones almost every week.
  2. We have Dethroning Moment of Suck for complaining. We don't need more.
  3. Gushing isn't as harmful as complaining. Nobody gets hurt or offended just because someone praises a cartoon they like.

The Complaining page can make amusing reading (I sometimes look back on it using web.archive) but was cut because it was causing a lot of problems. There were attacks not just on works but on creators and fans, barely veiled homophobia, and quite a few entries simply hurled insulted without giving any reason why they were bad. It was also full of bad indentation, in which the sub-bullets either escalated the vitriol or aggressively responded to it. Neither is good for discussion. It didn't help that few bothered to attack obscure works, most of it was for popular stuff (the Shounen Big 3, Twilight, The Dark Knight Rises) which means they have plenty of fans who would be tempted to respond. It was a Pandora's tinderbox.

I'm not entirely happy with how the Gushing pages are set out; since they so often use first-person, I would have the be signed, and I don't like how many are just "X is so great!" But I know why it's been kept alone: it causes no trouble.

And I wish the review section were used more. I know there are innumerable other sites with reviews, but this is the only one I know of any size that allows reviews of any work in any medium. I often feel that a work page without a review is lacking something.

Stories don't tell us monsters exist; we knew that already. They show us that monsters can be trademarked and milked for years.

Hm, that actually is a very great point. Thanks!

Part of the problem with the review section is that it was set up more to get complaining and other opinions out of the main work pages than to actually be a home to reviews, which manifests as e.g. a fairly strict size limit, but people want their opinions to actually be read so they'll try to sneak their opinions onto YMMV pages and keep Darth/Sugar pages up for that purpose, because people aren't really interested in reviews of a particular work by random tropers, especially ones that can't go into a lot of detail, when, in practice, they already hear a lot about the work by browsing the rest of the wiki.
