General Media Categories Discussion

Go To

Inspired by and spinning off this thread, this is a general thread for Media Categories on this wiki.

Continuing a discussion from that thread, what media category should Manhwa and Manhua go under? They're usually lumped in with Anime & Manga, but that media category is specifcally for Japanese animation and comics. So I'd suggest either giving them their own media category of either "Eastern Comics", Manhwa and Manhua get their own individual media category, or we just put them under the general Comic Books.

Adding it would run the risk of people adding examples to music videos that could've fit without the video

So I would say keep it in the music video

I thought "Music Videos" was already a media category... I've seen it on lots of pages.

I'd say it needs to be separated from "Music", since a video can have its specific tropes.

But they were released accompanying specific music, so I feel such examples still fit in the Music folder. Album covers and inserts are troped with Music.

I'm inclined to agree with lumping music videos with music as well.

Another vote for including videos and cover art under music. They're effectively part of a multimedia work, but it's all supporting the music.

On a different musical question...

Opera, like The Musical, goes under the Theatre namespace. They've got plot, costume, staging, acting...

...but where do we put an Oratorio?

The Other Wiki defines an oratorio as a concert piece that still has characters and narrative, with soloists singing a character's role. But they're generally on religious subjects and intended to be performed in a place of worship. No set, no costume, no attempt to act other than singing the lines.

It feels as if that could push it to the Music namespace instead.

None of which stops an opera from being performed purely as a classical concert, or an oratorio being performed with costumes, set and acting... the lines can blur. But as a starting point, should oratorios be Music?
