Species that only good at one technology

I want to create a species who is extremely good at bioengineering but suck at pretty much everything else. My idea is that they are a species that can change their body into any kind of tools they desire to solve problems, thus they have very little need for technological advancement. But they also very interest in control their body and their environment as their religion view that their world is their god and she is like them, constantly changing, just at slower pace. Thus they excel at bio-engineering, to the point they can create new races to serve them. But I also need to make that species extremely against the ideas of create bio weapons, especially the creation of creatures that only goal in live is to fight and kill. My idea is that this species used to waged war against themselves and someone did try to create a Super Soldier but the result turned out so bad for the creatures they it basically scarred the entire species, making them all swear to never make creatures for warfare anymore.

So anyone have any ideas to make this sound more believable?

So they are basically like Shoggoths but without their masters enslaving them first?

Blob monsters capable of imitating any organic shape required yet are incapable of handling or creating anything artificial on their own, with the exception of art yet even that ends up being extremely crude imitations of art they've seen before without the context behind them.
