Her interpretations aren't totally on point—at least to me anyway, but they're not totally wrong either though. She does love the original and anyone who says she hates it is wrong or lying. She has sensibilities and with those sensibilities, sees things that could potentially be problematic.

That's all. Not a misguided viewpoint, just a strong one is all.

While the original has dated story elements, a lot of the other story elements are more innovative than you think too. Cinderella 2015 really made me care for the relationship between her and the Prince in a way I don't think I ever had before, so I'm hoping this certainly does the same too.

I have to be the cynical dead horse that keeps clamoring for these damn remakes to stop existing.

But the world hates me and says I’m wrong so we keep getting more and more. What’s next? Emperor’s New Groove but Kronk and Yzma have their personalities removed while the movie is praised for having a realistic CGI Llama? Lilo and Stitch but the movie is darker and edgier and Lilo is an unlikable brat while Stitch is a CGI abomination? Oliver and Company but we have awful CGI dogs and no music?

Or best of all, Brother Bear but like Lion King the animals have absolutely no facial expressions and the story makes changes in the writing for the worst.

Well being fair if this fikm fails. Theirs a good shot the entire line dies.

They’re kinda dying already… Most of them are released on streaming at this point (has anyone even heard of Peter Pan & Wendy?) and The Little Mermaid was profitable but it wasn’t a huge hit or anything. The last remake that was actually successful was The Lion King, and that was in 2019, the year Disney drowned in money.

At least this one promises to be a… different take on the story, so it could be more interesting.

[up]And nowadays, unless you’re a YMS fan, no one even cares about that rehash anymore. I still remember an argument from AniMat that Disney remakes are fine to keep around, simply because of how everyone just forgets about them eventually because of how bland and inconsequential they are. Even with the best of intentions (or even if it’s actually good), no one cares about them. Disney remakes haven’t even been prime Video Essay fodder since Cruella.

The type of person who watches Lion King 2019 and calls it a masterpiece is the type of film critic I want nothing to do with.

I should probably rank them from best to worst. But they are all terrible in some form to me. Even Jungle Book, the good one, allegedly.

I'm pretty sure there will be the Bile Fascination, Tainted by the Preview, and Overshadowed by Controversy for the changes in the movie for the YMMV page. My mom would not see it and there are people who want to see Gal Galdot as the evil Queen so the Just Here for Godzilla will beg the question.

I mean I don’t really care either to see it. Not out of some irrational hatred but just boredom. The dwarves look like MAD Magazine caricatures of themselves, and everything looks pastel as hell.

Glad the success of the Hunger Games prequel kind of helped saved Rachel Zegler's career for a bit.

I like her as Anthea and wanted to highlight her, especially the scene when Wonder Woman shows up and she looks at Freddy for fawning over her. I like to imagine her saying: "Dude, that's my stepmother!" Haha.

Given I really liked The Little Mermaid 2023, I think Snow White 2025 still has potential despite many people having questions going in.

Regardless, this thread shouldn't be for non-stop complaining about how bad you think the Disney remakes are.

If you're not interested in this movie, you can just...not post here.

Such ceaseless complaining is also against the rules and gets threads locked.

I love the original and I want to give this new one a chance, especially because I think both Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot are good choices for the leads.

Again, the original has stuff that surprisingly holds up even today. It just goes to show.

TurfNation did a good video discussing Zegler's situation.

That no one should be listening to anti-SJW news channels and open bigots for opinions on Zegler and that she has the right to state her opinion. But he also points our that there is definitely a discussion to be had on changing Snow White's personality/character could very much be changing what made Snow's character loved to begin with.

He brings up how Zegler's statements have gotten criticism from other feminists and those on the left as well, which we should certainly not dismiss or lump in with the bigoted trolls that do harass Zegler. And that at the end, if you're going to truly criticize someone for the movie and its decisions, criticize the studio heads, not the actors.

I did a quick look at what Zegler's comments were and found this on NBC news:

In an interview with Variety in September at the Disney Fan Club’s D23 Expo, where fans got a first glimpse of the new “Snow White,” Zegler said she cried and was overwhelmed when she saw herself on the screen as Snow White. She then praised crew members who helped make the film possible.

But on social media, people zeroed in on her response to being asked about bringing a “modern edge” to the story of “Snow White."

“I just mean that it’s no longer 1937,” Zegler said. “We absolutely wrote a ‘Snow White’ that ... she’s not going to be saved by the prince, and she’s not going to be dreaming about true love; she’s going to be dreaming about becoming the leader she knows she can be and that her late father told her that she could be if she was fearless, fair, brave and true.”

Another interview at the D23 Expo was also scrutinized on social media. In the sound bite, Zegler told Extra TV that there’s a big focus on Snow White’s love story in the original film “with a guy who literally stalks her.” She called that part of the story “weird” and said they “didn’t do that this time.”

"We have a different approach to what I'm sure a lot of people will assume is a love story just because we cast a guy in the movie," she said. "It's really not about the love story at all, which is really, really wonderful."

She joked that all the scenes featuring Prince Charming “could get cut,” adding: “Who knows? It’s Hollywood, baby.”

In a third interview, which Entertainment Weekly published in September, Zegler said she was frightened by the original 1937 film and didn’t revisit it until she was cast as Snow White.

“I think I watched it once and never picked it up again. I’m being so serious,” she said.

[up] What I think about this:

She didn't like the original. We can articulate her complaints as much as we want, but the layman version I'm getting out of the above is that she didn't like the original and feels her version is better.

She's entitled to that opinion, same as people are entitled to theirs about hers.

Snow White isn't a film I'm particularly attached to, but I don't enjoy evaluating older works I happen to like through a feminist lens either. It feels and usually results in a social downgrade, like a badge of shame the movie gets for existing. That's just me.

I think actors in general just don't visualize or care about how much backlash they get on social media. While I don't hate Rachel Zegler or feel she deserves the blowback she's gotten, its like watching someone run into highway traffic thinking no one's going to hit them. I lose more and more sympathy each time it happens.

I might see Snow White, I might not.

Literal victim blaming. All of that is victim blaming.

I'm gonna be honest, if this is the opinion of subjecting something to feminist analysis, then that's ridiculously thin-skinned.

Honestly even if Zegler doesn't like the original film, that's fine. The film's quality will ultimately fall on the hands of Webb, Gerwig, and Wilson.

I think she does like the original or at least holds a fond nostalgia for it. It sounds like her sensibilities now are just not linked with what that movie is though.

Like I said, there's many parts of the original 1937 film that actually hold up great: the Prince approaches her and apologies for taking her by surprise, he serenades her and she's into it, she helps the Dwarfs to advance and grow beyond their very child-like ways, her comfort becomes their priority above everything else, her beauty is not just skin-deep but also represented by her love and respect of all things around her, the Love's First Kiss at the end is because the Prince thinks he's bidding farewell to a lost loved one.

This movie's still a classic for good reason. I hope that Disney will remember what works certainly when they're making the movie, but even if they don't, I'll try to judge it fairly for what it is too though.
