Inspired on this thread, only with pets instead of children. Why or why not? Assuming you don't have one or more already, of course.

As for me, no thanks. But I definitely love cats. Just not enough to have one.❤🐱

i really want one, but dad would always and always decline. hopefully, when we do get a pet, he'll be hella attached

a cat (especially a ragdoll) or a dog (especially a pug) will do

So, in the decades since I left home, I've had a dog and four cats. One cat at the moment.

On one hand, they're an obligation, a cost and a worry. I've just been away for three weeks and getting cat care involves favours from friends or paying professionals. Either way, with an outdoor cat you also have the risk that they've just... left home... before you get back from a long trip, deciding to leave the empty house because they've been abandoned. Which has happened to friends.

On the other hand, they're wonderful and improve almost any day. Except for the ones involving digestive accidents or rodents/birds brought into the house as prizes.

But there's also the long-term picture. I'm moving next year, and also wondering whether a second cat would be good company for my 10 year old moggy with attachment issues.

But getting a second cat now complicates that move, and also commits me for a decade or more. And we'd talked about getting chickens at the new place, which may not be entirely cat-compatible.

So how do you balance it all...

super tempted. alas, the bay area is infamously pet unfriendly, and i already have a lot of money to sink into hobbies and self-care; im away from my flat a lot and ADHD isnt fun when i forget to eat, let alone feed someone else

the family also had a dog and when he died it really tore family members up, especially the ones who were struggling with mental illness

hail, holy queen of the sea, you're whirling-in-rags, you're vast and you're sad

I’ve owned Chico for over 5 years. He’s still egotistical but his sense of curiosity remained. His presence is calming and keeps me in a good mood.
