Engineer & mod discussion thread

I've done one or two minor edits on locked pages on my own accord, though I'd always just assumed it would be okay.

Just a placeholder to confirm we saw the query.

I asked a similar question about amends to locked pages etc. just after I joined the team - now summarising the feedback from that into a single response. Once a couple more mods have time to review/amend it, we'll post that here.

In the meantime, some video notes. There's a lot today:

• THE IRL EXPERIENCE — is it clear enough that this is a change of pace?
• Ben Makes Mike Dance — I rejected an earlier version of this clip for being a hero added to a villain trope. This trope also appears to be evil, but the description does mention it can be less malicious; does the clip fit?
• Giving Chunks the Antidote — Is it obvious enough that the fight is being altered, instead of just acting as intended?
• I used to love this song — Is this convenient enough for the trope?
• You can call me, Patrick. — I'm having trouble understanding what's going on here, so I need a second opinion on if I'm just... missing something that makes it fit.
• The Flame — Is it clear that the character is Carnage and not just making a reference?
• Farnsworth and Mom — Something is throwing me off about this one; maybe it's because they spend more time being romantic than showing off any sort of BST.

Otherwise, did everything older than 5 hours.

I also think it's necessary to say up front that there's an evader who may or may not be Sayaka who appears in the videos quite frequently. I've been catching them pretty consistently because they always upload videos for MST 3 K and Ruff Ruffman, as well as Phineas And Ferb thrown in. The videos are very often the same clips, so once you notice them you'll always notice them. I've been reporting this issue in a private ATT thread so far, but I thought it'd be necessary to post about it here so that everyone can keep an eye out (now that the engineer team is bigger). For comparison, search the videos of aproposer, jayime, cyanclosely, and fyucha to see what I'm referring to.

That makes sense. So for, say, TRS wick cleanup we can do it, but just to add an example or remove something that isn't obvious misuse we shouldn't?

Re hooking crowners: Hooked a crowner now, what should I do to give it some votes?

That's pretty much up to whoever pays attention to the thread.

For policy decisions and No Recent Examples, Please! / No Real Life Examples, Please! we'll generally do an ATT post to draw attention to the Crowner vote (locking it immediately, to keep discussion on the thread).

I don't think that option adds much for anything work-specific, though.

For some work-specific Image Pickin' threads I've done Discussion page posts, so that Tropers watching that particular work page get sight of it.

Farnsworth and Mom — it's got Slap-Slap-Kiss as a secondary trope. How about swapping the tropes' places?

I considered that, but I don't really know how Slap-Slap-Kiss works and if it has to be literal or not so I held off.

Makes sense, then. I'll PM the troper to let them know and then switch it over in the morning.

Wasn't Slap-Slap-Kiss meant to be TRS'ed at some point because the definition is unclear and potentially redundant to other tropes?

Probably, but for now the video is up.

Any opinions on the other ones I mentioned?

Asking for input for the video submission for Boss-Altering Consequence, since I don't think this is actually possible to illustrate properly even with video. Basically, the trope is when an optional sidequest or item allows you to significantly alter the mechanics of a specific Boss Battle, but the video fails to show that the item obtained is optional, or that the subsequent Boss Battle that is shown is different from what it would have been without the item.

Likewise Canon Character All Along seems a bit too subtle for me, since it doesn't explicitly show that The Flame is actually Carnage.

I'm wondering if the criteria for approving "illustrative" videos are as strict as picking page images.

If you're referring to the video about Dead Estate, I wasn't sure either which is why I held off. But since neither of us can really say it illustrates, we may just need to reject it.

I tend to err on the side of "if I can reasonably get the trope from this footage", I roll with it. Some of my approvals were on the border, but it's all a judgement call.

I've started to go through and reject all the videos from Amour Le Fou, as they outed themselves (and their new account) as being dotheroar. There's a lot and I only managed to get through one page so far, so if anyone else wants to help get rid of them, that'd be great. (At least, I assume it's standard to go and reject videos from ousted ban evading accounts just like we revert all other edits)

On that note, I went through the video backlog. We only have one page of pending videos left, all of which are 10 hours old or newer.

Video question, are medium subindexes valid as secondary tropes? I don't think so.

I'd say yeah that shouldn't be there.

Immediate note, text saved in Arabic, Herbew and Japanese stay that when a page is saved instead of being saved in unicode-code, which is a significant improvement. Nothing broken when saving.

ç is saved as ccedil, while ş saved as-is. Odd, I've thought they are in the same alphabet. Some other european characters are also still saved HTML-encoded, like aacute, iacute, euml.

On forums all look fine in Preview instead of looking like a Ominous Visual Glitch. Saving and editing on forums seem fine.

Thanks for the feedback ill send it up to Chris. Everything is put on hold until we convert the DB over so this is top priority. Once we get all the bugs worked out we can update on live and then push out the toolbar and TLP changes soon after.

On the current featured trope Match-Three Game certain characters (I think they're supposed to be dashes) are glitched out (at least on Safari for iPhone). Also, I don't seem to be able to log in to my account on the dev server (I am able to access the dev server itself), though that may just be the credentials saved on my phone not being my actual credentials.
