New Emojis for TVTropes!!! :D [YourChoiceHere]

So currently, we have up arrow, down arrow, thumbs up, thumbs down, WMG, a medal (representing Awesome), a bug, evil grin, grin, smile, surprise, stick out tongue, sad, waii (as in kawaii, i.e. cute), wink, lightbulb, cool, lol, and ninja.

We're missing anger and confusion emojis. Maybe add a crying emoji as well?

Maybe something like a shrug or sideways thumb? A middle ground between and to show an idea could work, but needs development or tweaking.

Seconding. It would be great for abstaining.

What about this elephant icon? It could be used as shorthand for "don't forget" because Elephants Never Forget, or to indicate that something which needs to be discussed isn't being discussed a la the elephant in the room.

Here are my suggestions.

• Scissors, to represent cutting entries.

• A ban symbol.

• Person-to-door, to represent bouncing tropers.

• Lamp, to represent Lampshade Hanging.

• Magnifying glass, to represent the search feature.

• Fire, to represent Flame Wars or Flame Bait.

• Lightning bolt, to represent Zapping.

• Alicorn, just for fun.

Another lot of suggestions from me:

• Square checkmark (could be used for a project checklist, and to match "pen on square"?)
• Square x-mark (I don't know the regulations on suggesting pro icons BTW)
• Square (could be used for a project checklist to note what still needs to be done?)
• Pen on file, maybe to indicate that (a) troper(s) is/are currently working on and/or editing on a TV Tropes project? (Pro icon as well)

• Ghost, to represent users that anonymize themselves using things like a VPN or private mode on their browser.

• Dinosaur, representing topics here that are ancient by Internet standards (this is a Pro icon, though; I don't know what the rules are regarding those).

• Robot, representing users that employ bots.

• Bomb, to represent bombing TLP entries.

• redhat, to represent giving hats to TLP entries.

Added suggestions to OP.

So far my plan is to replace the classic icons with upgraded replacements and then an arrow dropdown that will reveal a few dozen or so along with the current legacy icons. But if we want to have hundreds of icon choices i will need to manually add them to the database and pull them from there with some sort of search bar.

To be honest, the vast majority of suggested are ones I don't see being used much but if we have room for them sure.

Well I am adding emoji support for the TLP, Queries, Discussions, Reviews and signature lines too. Plus the forums are a busy place that gets upwards of 100,000 posts a month so I’m sure plenty of the emojis will be put to use over time.

If we're keeping the Font Awesome icons around, I have some criticism:

Flat icons are harder to see across different colored backgrounds. Compare the old namespace icons◊, which almost all had outlines, and use color to pop out with the new, flatter icons◊. Many become hard to see on Night Vision where the sprites with outlines wouldn't have this problem. If new themes are made for TV Tropes, it would become even harder to balance these with every possible background.

I also don't know if this is specific to my web browser, but the Font Awesome symbols distort when zoomed in, sometimes making them unappealing to look at◊ while images would consistently resize. (I'm using TV Tropes at 120% zoom.)

IMO smaller amounts of quality, original graphics look better than a variety of flat stock graphics. The FA symbols aren't really much different from emoji, which we can already use.

edit: That said, I'm not against adding new symbols. I think standardizing namespace icons as emotes, like [ymmv] would be an easy way to add many new icons, including the heart somebody suggested.

I’d also prefer a small amount of quality but Font awesome is what we got. Unless you or someone else wants to volunteer to hand craft emojis for T Vtropes? Pretty sure the FA icons will be more than adequate though. The newer FA icons sure look way better than the old version ones we currently have lol.

Any issues with background color is solved as long as I add a few choices of color for each icon.

I've worked with small pixel art before so that might be fun to try. My only other concern is that adding a bunch of icons could make it slightly harder to improve on them in the future, but I'm not the one running these things.

It's good to hear the coloring could be fixed. Admittedly I don't know where this is much of a problem outside the namespace icons I brought up, which are a PNG image anyway.

I haven't kept a close eye on FA icons but if they're improving, then that's good news. I wasn't a fan of the inverted lighting on the thumbtack, and it looks like they're removing that.

Well it’s not like there’s a need or rush to get these new icons up, so if you and maybe some other tropers wanted to submit your own icons we could do that instead. This was just the easiest/quickest option to mass add some from font awesome.

Honestly I’d much rather prefer custom tv tropes made icons, but we don’t have any graphic designers working here. If we could get some tropers to create some for us, I’d be able to put their names somewhere permanent on the site so everyone knows who created all the icons.

I can contribute. We want emotes that'd be useful for TVT, right? Or at least prioritize getting those added?

Yea the first emoji’s we should get made are newer versions of the current ones. And then add more from there based upon what you all and the community wants.

For the tropers volunteering to make emojis for everyone, maybe create a few different designs and post them here to get opinions and we can all vote on what style direction we should go in?

Lol yes. A bigger and improved happy face, thumbs up, ninja etc. well ninja is probably the only one that’s plenty big, just needs more detail.

As far as icons beyond that we could have a vote or the volunteer artists can decide themselves or take requests? Dealers choice.

Well if one of you could post a couple test icons here we could get more input on what everyone wants before anyone starts creating a bunch.

The ninja is prolly a little too large compared to the default text size so it could be shrunk.

Ok. So what's happening is that a bunch of proposed emotes are gonna be grabbed from FA and put on TVT. Any troper-made emotes created (soon or way in the future) to replace them can replace them, plus any newly troper-made emotes that the community likes can get added, right?

E: oh yeah. What "missing" emotes in tvt's current set does everybody want most?
