To-do list:
- Rename Guttural Growler to Raspy And Tough and retool it directly (as opposed to launching a new trope) to refer to where a raspy voice is used to symbolize the character being tough, and make it a unisex trope about the general "raspy=tough" idea.
- Rewrite the description at Sandbox.Raspy And Tough.
- Clean up on-page examples.
- Clean up wicks.
From what I saw on this site, Guttural Growler seems to have a confusing definition. It is often stated to be "character has a low, raspy voice", which isn't exactly a trope and would fit much better on things like Evil Sounds Raspy (raspy voices signifying evil characters) or Tomboyish Voice (a girl with a raspy voice to signify her as a tomboy). So I think a wick check is in order.
Here's the check (with organizing help from Yindee) and the results:
- Gruff/Raspy voice with some context (10/50)
- Chairs (22/50)
- ZCE (14/50)
- Unsure (4/50)
Solutions:
- Create a trope where a raspy is voice is used to symbolize the character being tough. Make a male-centric example to a "Tough guy with raspy voice" example and move female examples to Tomboyish Voice. If not, we can create a unisex trope about the general "raspy=tough" idea. (though that might also need a seperate wick check for TV).
- Rename and redefine the trope (in-line with the first solution)

It did. Thanks!
She/Her | Currently cleaning N/AHuh, looks like I neglected to pin the OP despite adding a to-do list, and despite the thread being made in early summer. Fixed that.
Patiently awaiting the release of Paper Luigi and the Marvelous Compass.Characters/ D-F and Half of the creator pages are dewicked.
She/Her | Currently cleaning N/A1400 wicks left.
She/Her | Currently cleaning N/A1256 wicks left. Once again letting everyone that the Rapsy And Tough TLP is up for grabs.
She/Her | Currently cleaning N/AYou mean Raspy And Tough?
Kirby is awesome.Just claimed it
Silver and gold, silver and goldGoddamn mispellings, but that will probably be depricated anyway.
Thanks Coach!
She/Her | Currently cleaning N/ACharacters/ S is done. We are also at the triple digits wicks now (949 wicks).
She/Her | Currently cleaning N/ACharacters/ is finally done! 696 wicks left.
She/Her | Currently cleaning N/AThere's a ghost wick on LARP.The Duchy Of Linnagond. Can anyone remove that?
She/Her | Currently cleaning N/AFor ghost wicks create a page with any wick then cutlist it.
TroperWall / WikiMagic Cleanup392 wicks now! After this, I'll move to the Archer Archetype cleanup.
Anyways, any updates on the Raspy And Tough TLP?
She/Her | Currently cleaning N/AI can work on it more later this week. I can't promise that I'll get it done within the next couple of days, but thankfully there doesn't seem to be much left to do (might need to clarify the definition a bit, add more examples and bump, but that's it).
Silver and gold, silver and goldWent ahead and cleaned up Series/. Lots of ZCEs, which makes cleanup rather easy, but does also make me wish there were more examples we could properly move to other tropes. While dewicking, I found this on The Larry Sanders Show:
- Guttural Growler: Artie is rough and tough, and his voice is gruff.
Does this provide enough context that it can go on Raspy And Tough? I already threw it on the sandbox, but I wanted to check. There's also this example that was removed from Characters. The Witcher 2019 Protagonists:
- Guttural Growler: Geralt speaks with a very guttural voice, which adds to his intimidating presence. It's basically Henry Cavill doing his Doug Cockle-as-Geralt impression, which isn't a surprise given his vocal love of the games.
I found this one removing a wick from The Witcher (2019); is this also enough to count for Raspy And Tough?
back lolAll examples have been cleanup (barring a few Raspy And Tough wicks). Safe to close?
She/Her | Currently cleaning N/AWho will deal with the creation of Raspy And Tough? I'm still wondering about the examples I brought up above, and I've collected quite a few on my sandbox.
back lolThat can be done in the TLP; the thread doesn't need to stay open until then.
Currently Working On: Incorruptible Pure PurenessSounds good. Do we get rid of Most Triumphant Example entries for disambiguated tropes? That's the only wick remaining that may need to be taken care of.
back lolYeah, I think we do.
Currently Working On: Incorruptible Pure PurenessSince this is done now. Closing up shop! We'll leave the Raspy And Tough entry at the hands of the TLP.

Crown Description:
Consensus was to rename Guttural Growler and retool it to refer to where a raspy voice is used to symbolize the character being tough, and make it a unisex trope about the general "raspy=tough" idea. What should the trope's new name be?
I remade and re-cut that page to see if that fixes the ghost wick.
Patiently awaiting the release of Paper Luigi and the Marvelous Compass.
