Snoot Game cleanup

I'm more inclined towards the kind of description that Dirtyblue suggested.

So how long do we wait for Super_Weegee to show up before we can just revert their edit (with a reason this time, mind you) without it being an edit war?

I think we can give Weegee another day to respond. If they don't show up by then, then we can just go with consensus.

I'd give it a day then PM them to be safe since I'm not totally convinced that the various issues with special characters in usernames are entirely fixed; I feel like there's still a solid possibility that ping didn't go through lol.

It hard been fixed. I can see the ping in my inbox as well as theirs. We have tested it several times last year. The only ping bug (that I now of) is that pings that work on thread O Ps. They were online today so they should have seen my ping but if you want to message them tomorrow, you can.

Edited the page to remove some of the gushing. In particular I added the Aesops discussed, fleshed put the ZCE for Take That! (noting that the entire game is one with the game’s negative depiction of LGBTQ characters being the most obvious example of this), and added a Bury Your Gays entry. Also I added Shallow Parody to the YMMV. Is it safe to call a parody of something released far before the thing its parodying a Shallow Parody?

The description for Shallow Parody has a section detailing how it comes into play for unreleased works, so I'd say you're fine.

Any updates? I'm hoping the thread doesn't strike people the wrong way, as I'm worried it'll be seen as someone trying to cancel an entire work page rather than see that it seems a bit whitewashy about the game's content.

No response in PMs and as you can see they're still not here. I do agree that we should probably avoid being too one-sided, which the bit they removed might be, but at the same time the work is, objectively, a meanspirited mockery of the developers of Volcano High and their vision by a group of anonymous channers; I don't think it's a stretch of ROCEJ to note that it has literally all the traits of targeted harassment.

I'm not particularly concerned about being "too one-sided" against a work whose message is "queer people are evil and identifying as nonbinary is a delusion", to be perfectly honest...

Neither am I, but ROCEJ nonetheless mandates a degree of impartiality AFAIK. That said, I don’t think calling it out for what it objectively, unashamedly is (a meanspirited Take That! to Volcano High’s developers for the unforgivable crime of making a “cringe” pro-LGBTQ+ game) counts as being impartial.

Well, even so, I agree that the previous description was hardly unfair.

Yeah, I think it's worth noting via that entry just how little Snoot actually has to do with the game it's attempting to parody. AFAIK it's literally just a rewritten version of the protagonist and the some of the supporting cast's designs slapped onto a totally original and thoroughly unrelated plot and setting; its only other connection is that it deliberately evokes politics antithetical to those of the original's creators. Cannot emphasize enough that there were no plot or character details available about Volcano High until long after Snoot released

That sounds pretty solid. Only correction is that I'm pretty sure Volcano High was delayed significantly due to COVID; IIRC its original release date was set for closer to when Snoot released

Speaking of Shallow Parody, should there be an entry on the main page for Fix Fic? I know that essentially is by the definition of the trope as "author makes work that "corrects" canon in some way", but it has so little to do with the game's canon in and of itself itself as there was basically no information on said game in the first place when Snoot Game was released, barring the launch trailer.

I mean, I'd add it myself but I really don't want to step on anybody's toes or start an edit war. If there's an entry we should probably draft it in this thread first.

I think it might qualify on the grounds that the developers were "fixing" the entire concept of Fang by giving them a personality and backstory that appeals to them and what they consider a "happy ending", but you do have a point about how Snoot's being almost totally divorced from the plot of what it's "parodying" makes it difficult to trope its relationship to the parent work.

It's akin to a Harry Potter "fanfic" that features a young wizard boy with a lightningbolt scar on his forehead named Harry Potter attending a magic school called Hogwarts, but whose story, setting, and characters are otherwise almost entirely original. And also designed from the ground-up as a takedown of J.K. Rowling's political leanings.

Fix fics are made by the fans and these people weren't actual fans of the work. Also, I am not sure if there was even enough to fix if the game wasn't out and the main thing the developers of Snoot Game didn't like was that one of the main character was enby. Unless I am getting something wrong.

From what I recall hearing about the development of this game the mockery wasn't exclusively due to the LGBT themes but that was definitely a part of it; there was also a lot of piss-taking around the art style and premise which were taken as ugly and melodramatic, respectively.

Again, though, the game had a grand total of one or two trailers with zero story or gameplay, so I think it's an edge-case exception for the Fix Fic as there was practically nothing to "fix" in the first place.

I see no one ever got around to reverting Super_Weegee's edit. It's been more than long enough that we can just do that, right?

I was recently looking at other cleanup threads and I noticed that same troper argued vehemently against the community consensus of Kris from Deltarune being considered non-binary as opposed to a case of Ambiguous Gender, so, uh. That gives me pretty bad vibes about their defensiveness of this game.

Looks like it wasn't added back because there were concerns about the wording a few posts back? I just went ahead and added it back as it has been approved by consensus.

As for Super_Weegee, their behavior does seem questionable but l don't know if that's enough to take action. If more problematic entries are found, than an Ask The Tropers report would be warranted.

Don't really have the time to sift through all of their edits, but I noticed that on Memes.The Last Of Us Part II they removed a mention that Metacritic users review-bombed the game "specifically for featuring LGBTQ characters" with the edit reason of "shoehorn".
