Old Complete Monster cleanup thread

Welcome to the Complete Monster proposal thread! This is the thread where new Complete Monster examples are vetted, approved, and written up. If you're looking for the general cleanup thread (for cuts, rewrites, expansions, and the like), please go here

Important: Before suggesting any new examples, please read the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List; if you have any questions, the odds are high they are answered there. Additionally, please check here for the earliest date a work can be discussed (usually two weeks from the U.S. release date) and whether the work has already been reserved by another user.

Here is how the process works:

    Process

  1. If you have a candidate to propose, you can simply come right in and propose them! If the character's run is brief, such as a single issue of a comic book, then a simple summary of their actions and any potential redeeming qualities will be enough; for longer-running candidates, an effortpost (EP) might be helpful for organizing the proposal. An EP is not outright required, but please be mindful that if a post becomes too clunky and unorganized, it can be very hard for other people to follow.

  2. After the proposal, there will be a 72-hour discussion and voting period, where people may ask questions and vote on the candidate. The number of upvotes must outnumber the downvotes by at least five for the character to be considered "approved".

  3. Three days after the proposal has been made, if the character has been approved, you may post the writeup (the text to be posted on the trope page itself) on the thread and send it to the drafts page. Your candidate will soon be added to the CM subpage. If the work has a page, you should add your candidate to the relevant YMMV page. Voila! It's that simple!

Outside of this process, we do have a few ground rules:

    Ground Rules

  1. To keep the thread moving at a reasonable pace, there are some restrictions on when a proposal can be made. There should only be a maximum of four EPs posted both per page and per hour to ensure that nothing gets lost in the shuffle; additionally, each individual troper should only be proposing or writing up characters from a maximum of three works at a time (from initial proposals to end of their voting period). If your proposal would fall outside of either of these guidelines, we'd like to ask you to please wait until they would fit within; feel free to type them up on an outside document, and then when the time comes, you can just copy, paste, and post!

  2. No plagiarism of any kind. This is a very serious matter site-wide, as the website could get in actual legal trouble over this; as a result, this can very quickly lead to mod intervention. This can take many different forms:
    1. Direct plagiarism, i.e. wholesale copying. This is not only the easiest to find, but is also the most likely to warrant quick moderator intervention. To be clear, quoting in some places is perfectly acceptable, but it has to be very clear you're quoting from something else and it cannot be anything longer than a sentence or two - if you're quoting an entire work summary from Wikipedia, no one is going to believe you've actually consumed the work, so even if you cite your source, your candidate will be downvoted anyway.
    2. Self-plagiarism. Even if you can prove that you wrote the same text in both places, the site itself can't contain any of the duplicated text. If you already wrote something once before, it's not too hard to write it a second time.
    3. Using another site's work as a template for a proposal. Just because you don't copy and paste something directly doesn't mean it's any harder to detect if you're basing parts or all of your proposal on text someone else wrote. To be clear, this doesn't violate site rules and won't lead to mod intervention, but just like if you directly plagiarize, no one will believe you've consumed the work if you're clearly basing your proposal on something else. This thread largely operates on the honor system, and tweaking someone else's work to pass it off as your own is one of the fastest ways to lose trust.

  3. Votes must be for specific candidates, meaning no blanket voting (i.e. "yes to everyone I missed").

  4. If you are the first person to downvote a candidate, please provide an explanation of why when you do so. We're here for discussions above all, and a hit-and-run downvote doesn't facilitate anything.

  5. If a work is already reserved by another user, please don't comment on the work or any potential characters worth discussion before the discussion date. We know how exciting it is when a work has a keeper that you're waiting to talk about, but it's not fair to the person who reserved the work who is just as excited to lead the discussion to see the discussion getting spoiled before they get to do it. On the other hand, if the reservation only has one name attached, shoot them a PM - they may be down for a collaboration, which will get you in on the fun as well!

  6. Please keep the thread on-topic. While discussing the trope is fun and we encourage people to enjoy it, questions like "who's your favorite CM" are off-topic and can lead to thumps. That's the kind of question to take to people's PMs if they're willing. Similarly, while we encourage friendliness and familiarity with other users, posts should always have some kind of thread-relevant purpose; for instance, if you want to wish someone a happy birthday, feel free to, but if it's the only thing in the post, it's off-topic and needs something else alongside it. Again, though, while we strive for a friendly atmosphere, this is not Facebook; life updates are fun, but unless they have some kind of impact on your thread participation, please do not bring it here - we have Yack Fest for that.

  7. Please refrain from asking anything along the lines of "How Did We Miss This One?" In almost every case, the answer is simply "No one thought about it before". This Is a Wiki where everyone has different interests, and the fact that people missed a particular candidate, even one that seems like a textbook example of a trope or a character who is particularly iconic in pop culture, means absolutely nothing. The question is disruptive, has a simple and consistent answer, and provides nothing to any discussion.

  8. If you are suspended from parts of the website, it is still possible to participate!
    1. For users who are suspended from editing the wiki, you still have full access to this thread. You can propose candidates and write them up with no issues whatsoever; while you will have to ask someone else to post the entry to the relevant pages once it is done, all write-ups are considered thread-approved - as in, done by consensus - and thus doing so does not violate any rules regarding meatpuppeting.
    2. If you are suspended from the forums, your participation is limited but not impossible. It is still possible for a forum-suspended user to assist in creating the write-up for a character who has already been approved; as previously mentioned, write-ups are inherently considered a consensus-based edit and thus not tied to any one particular user. However, you can not assist in the proposal of a character; as a proposal is based around the forum rather than the wiki, doing so with a forum suspension qualifies as meatpuppeting.

  9. Please keep all discussions "in-house".
    1. What other wikis use for CM equivalents is irrelevant here.
    2. Please be wary of using other wikis, Fandom or otherwise, as sources of information. They are just as fallible as a site like Wikipedia in regards to accuracy because they can be edited by any user, just as this site can.
    3. Do not attempt to force a communication with an author in an attempt to gather evidence or settle a debate; besides the fact that this is a YMMV trope and thus author intent has variable weight depending on the circumstance, doing so may cross the line into drama exportation, which is prohibited site-wide.

If you would like to use an EP for your candidate, here's the general format. This format does not have to be followed exactly, but these are the main topics that need to be covered:

    Effortpost Template

What is the work?

This is a brief summary of the work you're going to discuss. We don't need a full plot summary here, just however much we need to understand going into the discussion — it can even be as simple as quoting the summary on the work's page.

Who is the candidate and what have they done?

This is essentially the character's biography — who they are, their story, the crimes they commit, and, preferably (though not required), what happens to the candidate at the end. It does not have to include every single thing they ever do — for some villains, we'd be here all day if that was the case — but it should include the highlights of their journey.

Any redeeming qualities? Freudian Excuse?

This is where any potential redeeming characteristics or tragic backstory should be discussed. Do they have a tragic past? Do they show that Even Evil Has Standards or Even Evil Has Loved Ones? Maybe a Pet the Dog moment or two? This is where these should be discussed in full. Not every potential redeeming moment is a clear-cut disqualifier, but we should hear of any potential issues to ensure the character is discussed in full.

Are they bad enough?

A Complete Monster has to be particularly vile by the standard of the work they appear in. Therefore, you should look at what the character does compared to similar characters in the same work. This takes into account things like:

  • Their resource level (a human Serial Killer can't stand up to an alien Omnicidal Maniac, but they can be bad by the standard of other human serial killers)
  • The amount of time they have to work with (such as a one-shot character versus long-running antagonists)
  • The quantity vs. quality of their crimes compared to others (someone with a lower victim count but far more visceral and personal crimes could be considered as equally bad overall as someone with a higher body count but less horror involved)

Essentially, this section is an analysis of the kinds of villainy shown in the work and an explanation of why this particular character's villainy stands out within it.

Final verdict?

This is where you post your final conclusion on the character in question. You can continue elaborating on your reasons or even just say a simple "yes" or "no"; at this point, we've heard everything we need to hear.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: This thread tackles very serious and dark matters on a daily basis. We will be discussing things like murder, rape, torture, human trafficking, crimes against children, and in particularly dark cases, several of these issues at the same time. We keep a lighthearted air, but all candidates carry the general assumption that these are awful individuals committing disgusting crimes. We ask that if you participate, you do so with the requisite seriousness such dark topics require; exclamations of how gross something is, whether serious or sarcastic, are disrespectful to the topics at hand, and if you cannot handle such topics, please do not participate.

And that's everything you need to know. Welcome to the thread!

Late [tup] to Mr. Black, and also light [tup] to Tom Chaney. Has Josh Brolin played any other C Ms? Also on a wilder, unrelated note, has General Ivan Radek from Air Force One ever been brought up as a potential candidate?

Yes to the Leader.

I'm suddenly remembering a surprisingly dark villain in The Sims 2 for PSP. I haven't played the game in years, though, so I'll either have to get a new PSP and a copy of the game, or find a very detailed playthrough online.

EDIT: Nevermind. I just rewatched the ending, and it abuses the fourth wall to the point that it's expressly stated that everything within the game is nothing but a string of code following a predetermined script, meaning the Big Bad, Dr. Dominion, has massive moral agency issues, as he's just doing what the game tells him to do, to the point that even his own existential crisis over being a video game character is just another part of the game.

Since Aziel is undoubtedly being approved, and I'll be rather busy tomorrow, I hope people are OK with me posting his writeup half a day early:

  • The Devil's Apprentice: Aziel Stofeles is a devil so wicked that he is dissatisfied with the current, "mild" state of Hell. Disgusted that Lucifer has chosen the kindhearted human Filip as his successor, Aziel hatches a plot to usurp the throne, forcing a young demon boy to poison Lucifer before locking the boy in an abandoned church cellar with a mind-shattering spectre to waste away. Once Lucifer is on the brink of death, Aziel attempts to murder Filip so he can seize power and establish a regime under which all good-natured devils are wiped out, leaving only the most depraved stock alive.

[down] Done.

  • Fallout (2024): Leon von Felden is a high ranking researcher at West-Tek and the lead scientist on the development of the FEV virus, whilst also being complicit in Vault-Tec's scheme to start the Great War. Wanting to use the virus to create super-soldiers, Felden orchestrates the mass experimentation of countless humans due to no longer wanting to test on animals. These experiments left horrific results and eventually ended up creating the first batch of Super Mutants. Leon's legacy as the creator of the FEV virus has paved the bloody ambitions of countless megalomaniacs whilst his creation of the Super Mutants has left a marauding blight upon the wasteland.

Also gonna reserve Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, collabs are welcome of course.

What's the work?

The Orphans is a sci-fi podcast from a few years ago which unfortunately seems to have ended production due to the pandemic. It is set in the Collective, an interstellar government which makes use of clones as heavily oppressed salve labor. Clones are developed with special skills designated by their first names, with Nora's being natural leaders, Baz's being scientists and engineers etc. The series is an anthology following various different characters and their stories though there are some reoccurring characters such as my candidate Nora Vass.

Who is Nora Vass and what does she do?

A Nora strain clone, Vass is a uniquely ruthless and ambitious one who has gotten herself to a position of authority far higher than any other clone due to her diligence in enforcing the Collective's brutal laws towards clones. Her first appearance is in the story "Facility" where she's a behavioral analyst chief in charge of overseeing several facilities and making sure the clones working there follow the rules. She's introduced assigning a Xavier clone (a notably brutal strain of clone) to conduct inspections of the facilities and to execute anyone who is breaking the rules, with at least one facility having its entire staff killed as a result. When the inspector goes to a facility suspected of wrongdoing, he is murdered by a rogue AI which then contacts Vass and threatens to release sensitive Collective information unless she starts sending more people to the facility for it to kill, a plan Vass is only briefly reluctant to go along with before immediately sending it a batch of victims. Vass has kept this method of execution going for at least six years, even utilizing a neurotoxin that gruesomely kills then zombifies it's victims to help make the deaths looks like accidents.

During this time Vass kept rising through the ranks, executing a rebellious clone and becoming a High Admiral by using an underhanded trick to oust the clone holding that role from his position for being too soft on clones. This results in him being "decommissioned", with Vass coldly admitting that she would do the same to anyone else to advance her position. Vass later pops up in the story "Investigation" where she pursues a pair of rogue clones, threatening to execute a group who accidentally fed them information and when they reach the planet where the AI is, Vass betrays it by ordering it destroyed if the pair escapes. Vass' final appearance is in the story "Expose" where she is revealed to have been involved in a scheme to poison a community's water to test a chemical dispersal method, resulting in numerous (offscreen) deaths, and threatening a pair of reporters looking into the incident.

Mitigating Factors

I didn't propose her back when the podcast was ongoing because her arc wasn1't over but with the podcast seeming to have been cut short she doesn't have any issue keeping her from counting. She's completely unrepentant about her actions and seems to be something of a Boomerang Bigot towards other clones, angrily warning that clones trying to be as ambitious as her need to know their place. She has a brief moment of vulnerability when her superior threatens her (it's the only time she drops her unflappable demeanor and is genuinely scared) but the scene is more to show how ruthless said superior is rather than to really humanize Vass. Heinousness is no problem either, I got the evil AI up a while ago but Vass directly facilitates most of its crimes by feeding it victims to slaughter, gets an entire facility killed, employs a horrific neurotoxin against several people, and is supporting a system that oppresses and executes her own kind in massive numbers. There are other evil members of the Collective (like her aforementioned superior) but their crimes are entirely offscreen unlike most of hers.

Conclusion

A fairly easy keep.

Hope your prepared for an unforgettable luncheon

A'gaeris from Myst: The Book of Ti'ana has 10 upvotes and no downvotes. Here's my write-up:

A'gaeris is a master manipulator, bitter over his expulsion from the Guild of Writers for allegedly stealing a book. He turns that resentment into action when he frames Veovis, an innocent man, for murder and then convinces him to turn against the D'ni empire. Together, they commit terrorist acts, culminating in the release of a plague that kills nearly a million people. But even that was not enough to satisfy A'Gaeris' lust for revenge so he and Veovis sent corpses through to other Ages to ensure that any refugees would also be infected. Having developed a god complex, A'Gaeris ordered Veovis to write an Age where they could rule over the native population. Veovis refused and A'Gaeris promptly murdered him in cold blood.

  • Vartan Illiescu is a smug, slimy man who's so jealous of others having more that he decides to initiate terrorist attacks against them. Vartan plots a series of bombings against the elite and rich and in his worst act, has a mother and her young kids and housekeeper strapped to the floor with bombs which will go off if they move unless he's paid. When he comes across an elderly woman, Illiescu kidnaps her and intends to murder her to cover his trail. Confronted by Det. Sipowicz, Illiescu remains a smug racist creep who even threatens to avoid telling the location of the family if they won't let him go.

  • Hector Santos is a pimp who runs a forced prostitution ring. Purchasing the teenage Luisa López, Hector forces her into prostitution by use of force and drugs. Hector also keeps Luisa and all his girls in line by threatening to kill their families if they escape.
  • Steve McClintock is a a slimy Con Man who makes his living by using wayward pregnant criminal women to set up illegal adoption deals. McClintock has no plan to actually honour these and will instead fake that his client had a miscarriage, to the grief of the parents wanting a child. When one of McClintock's partners objects to this cruel treatment, McClintock nearly induces an actual miscarriage in her and threatens to murder her if she speaks of this. When his newest teenage con partner has had enough and wants out, McClintock strangles the heavily pregnant woman to death and later forces his girlfriend to create an alibi for him by threatening to kill her. Weasling out of the consequences, McClintock becomes a drug dealer before meeting his end.

Figured out I should try an EP for a chance, this one's something out from my usual comfort zone, because I'm proposing a candidate from a music video. Meaning, there's so much lesser narrative involved.

What's the work?

Alice in Chains is one of my favorite bands from the early 90s and their music video for "I Stay Away'' is the name of the work in question. It's a music video done entirely by stop motion and puppet animation and involves the band members taking a detour to a circus on their way to south.

Who is he and what has he done?

The band is accompanied by an unnamed, mischievous looking black-haired boy on their bus trip to south. Taking a detour to a circus, the boy, carrying a jar full of flies, releases his "pets" to cause chaos amidst the unassuming circus performers. The grisly results include a lion tearing apart its tamer, a daredevil motorcyclist losing control of his bike in the midst of a performance and crashing violently, a band of clowns getting into a clown car crash and subsequently duking out each other and a blindfolded knife thrower accidentally killing his partner. In the resulting chaos, all of the animals get into a full-blown panic mode which results in the entire circus burning down, with the remaining performers watching in horror. The boy then strokes the jar full of flies like a cat for a job well done, leering over the carnage he himself caused with glee.

Heinous standard

For a four-minute music video, there's not much characterization besides the boy being a very ominous, chaos-loving entity. The circus performers, like the knife thrower and his female assistant have very close relationships and the boy turning them into either Ax-Crazy lunatics who kill each other, or in the case of the former, causing their closest ones to die accidentally and feeling guilty about it. The lion tamer seems like an Asshole Victim for being unnecessarily mean-spirited towards the animal, but in case of the knife thrower and his partner, it seems more like the boy doesn't care how innocent his victims are. The band members themselves are just there to see when the circus burns to the ground and just seem like the usual Audience Surrogate you've seen in tons of music videos. Whatever symbolism is going on in the video, the boy seems like an allegory for death represented in the Bible, due to what he does and being accompanied by a swarm of flies as he arrives. The video seems to imply that the boy in question is on a cross-country carnage spree due to the fact he is on the road and traveling from one place to another.

Mitigating factors?

The boy doesn't seem to care about the flies, as stroking the jar after a job well done while admiring the chaos he and they caused seems more like a case of Admiring the Abomination.

Conclusion

I'll leave it up to you.

9-1-1: Jonah Greenway is a hotshot EMT introduced as an innocuous side character before his true evil nature is revealed. Having been hailed as a hero for saving a bus driver as a child, Jonah became addicted to being praised and decided to engineer events so he would always be seen in that light. Performing malpractice on patients in order to become lauded for "saving" them when they flatline, Jonah leaves a trail of corpses across several cities before arriving in Los Angeles. Continuing his twisted actions, Jonah stops the hearts of anyone he can on his hunt for glory, taking the lives of a motorist, a teenage boy, and 9-1-1 dispatcher Claudette Collins in the process. Kidnapping Hen and Chimney when they become wise to his actions, Jonah shows no remorse for all the death he's caused to satisfy his ego and claims that he is on the same level as a god, deciding who lives or dies. After torturing Chimney to the point of flatlining twice as a display of his "heroism", Jonah's only response to his eventual arrest for the murders is a wide, smug grin.

Ladies and gentlemen, Another Complete Monster candidate from Avocado Animations. And in my opinion, this is way more terrifying than Willy Wonka or steve.

WHAT’S THE WORK?

Among Us:The Full Story (Link) is an horror animation made by Avocado Animations based on the game Among Us.

WHO IS HE / WHAT DID HE DO?

The Imposter is an alien entity who landed on skeld using the vent systems. Using his powers, The Impostor would kill Cyan (Todd), an crewmate who came to investigate the entity, by ripping off his head. After Cyan's demise, The alien would shapeshift into Cyan and eat Todd's corpse to hide the evidence.

After disposing Todd, he would meet Orange (Fred) and after a moment of silence, reveals his nature and murders Fred before he could get away, and as Fred headed to his son as he was dying, the impostor comes to the electricity room, where Fred was talking his final words to his son, The imposter would finish him off by consuming the upper part of his body.

Soon after, Avo (Black), discovers the crime scene and as soon as he attempts to report it, the Imposter would approach him from behind and stab his head with his tongue. Red (Jay) sees the murder and tries to tell Everyone Cyan was the killer, but for some reason Cyan pointed to Jay and framed him for the murder, causing Jay to be electrocuted and ejected out of the ship.

The imposter would then head to Blue (Nick), who was ranting about the fact nobody remembers his birthday and murders him, only to be witnessed by Green (Thomas), who came here to celebrate His birthday, and as Thomas attempts to call a meeting, The Impostor would lock the door to the cafeteria, before proceeding to shooting him to death.

White (Drake) would see the crime scene later and reports the crime, only for him to be deemed as a murderer and he is ejected, Leaving only the Captain (Pink), Calvin (Lime) and Ted (Yellow) Left.

Imposter would then sabotage the oxygen and force everyone to separate, once the captain scolds him for blocks his away to the oxygen, Imposter would kill the captain, forcing the oxygen to not be fixed. As the survivors start dying drom the lack of oxygen, the Imposter would kill Lime in front of Yellow, grab onto Yellow, who is suffocating from lack of oxygen, and opens his mouth, instead of immediately eating him, The Imposter speaks for the first time:

"I win."

Before murdering Yellow, which would annihilate the crewmates of the ship.

FREUDIAN EXCUSES / MITIGATING FACTORS?

Nothing at all. While you could say that The Impostor has a lack of characterization, he still has enough characterization and personality to show that he is not just a mindless monster in multiple ways he killed the crewmates, he showed enough intelligence to show he is not just a generic Doomsday Villain.

He was capable of shapeshifting as the original Cyan and was capable of waiting to kill Black before he exposed the crime scene, framed Red for his killings, Toyed while his attempt to kill Green and even outright shot him dead instead of using his mouth, Sabotaged oxygen to slowly give the last three survivors a slow, cruel demise and even has One voice line, stating that he ‘won’, which does not make him a generic predator but an entity with a mind who kills for sport, bloodlust and pleasure.

And the big one as always, while this is an animation made by Avocado Animations, a guy known for making parody shock-value videos, aside from the fact that this is based on Among Us and that there are some quirky lines and funny moments (not to the impostor), This video is taken COMPLETELY Serious with not even a single amount of black humour stuff inside it. And while you could argue this is a shock value, the animation has enough story other than ‘Killer kills for sport’ as it slowly shows the psychological effects on the survivors as they are slowly losing their crewmates.

In conclusion, Nay.

HEINOUS STANDARDS

He is the only real villain in the story that manipulates the things behind the scenes. He has a kill count of 10… and his methods of killing them is extremely BRUTAL such as exploding their heads, impaling them, mutilating them in half, and slowly making them lose oxygen by sabotaging the oxygen system, showing that people are suffering from the lack of oxygen at the same time. Yes, he definitely meets the standards.

FINAL VERDITC?

Yes
