Also, is it too early to make a page for the film?

We can't make a page for a work that has no official promotional material out, like a poster or trailer.

Yeah. You may be able to make one tomorrow if you so wish, assuming that whatever we get has enough material to trope.

Calling it now. King Magnifico is the twist villain.

Between King Candy, Turbo (yes, separately), Hans, Bellwether, Ernesto De La Cruz, Evelyn Deavor, Namaari (when she was a kid) and to some extent Calliso Mal, almost all of the recent Disney/Pixar twist villains either wear white, formal wear, or white formal wear.

RE: King Magnifico:

I know we only have a name and a face to work with, but man, I'm kinda wishing this is the return of the shameless-to-be-the-villain kind of Disney villain who have an excruciatingly strong opinion of themeselves. (Think Ratigan and Ratcliffe. I'd also say Gaston, but he was the kind of villain who thought himself the hero.)

[up] Weren't there points where Ratigan and Ratcliffe wore white? Plus, is the twist villain still that when someone already told us he's the villain?

[up] I was mostly referring to the more recent twist villains, but Ratigan and Ratcliffe don't really wear much white. Their main outfits are prominently black and purple respectively, with Ratigan's royal outfit being purple, Ratcliffe's armor being black, and he gets a yellow outfit in the sequel.

They're releasing a trailer for this already? Disney must REALLY have faith in this one then. Their last 2 movies didn't have their first trailer released until summer.

Trailer just dropped on ABC

Looks nice.

  • 2D-mimicking CG looks nice.
  • Magnifico is definitely the villain.
  • The gag with the goat eating stardust then talking in a deep voice is funny.

2D-mimicking CG looks nice.

So...I guess this is Disney attempting the Spider-Verse style of animation after all?

Magnifico is definitely the villain.

Oh thank Mickey! No more twist villain this time around, we're back to knowing that the advertised antagonist is indeed the antagonist, no ifs, ands, or buts! grin

The gag with the goat eating stardust then talking in a deep voice is funny.

If this is apparently the origin of Disney Animated Canon or how it all started, then I'd be down with this being why most Disney animals can talk (or can be comprehended by humans at least). [lol]

I am now more excited for Wish than I was before, so the trailer did its job.

As someone who finds betrayal very scary, twist villains don’t bother me.

The “just a force of nature” villains like the Druun and the Pando are boring though.

I commend the celshading but man the character design has that generic look to it that the celshading doesn't really elevate the film.

Yes, as much as I liked the backgrounds, the Cel Shading being the only stylization in the character designs can give the impression that they didn't go all the way through. Don't get me wrong, I don't think every movie should look like, let's say, Spiderman Into The Spiderverse (especially since the latter had the specific aesthetic purpose of adapting a Marvel comic book, meaning its style shouldn't be taken as a norm), but it does look like they could be a bit more brave with the character designs and animation to really go for the storybook watercolor feeling they are aiming for. See how Puss in Boots: The Last Wish uses brushstrokes on its textures, for example.

It's their Milestone Celebration though, so I understand that they may prefer to not risk too much on this and leave experimentation for later films.

I think it would have been nice if they went for a more experimental style in later movies, yeah, but I think I can forgive it here as well. I think comparing the art-style of Wish to that of Spider-Verse is a little like comparing apples to oranges anyway. Spider-Verse is clearly trying to evoke the look and feel of an action-packed comic book (several different kinds of comic books, even) while Wish seems to be evoking the look and feel of a storybook that a mom or dad might read to their kid for a bedtime story.

That said, I can't help but worry that people would object to a DAC movie experimenting with a different art-style, though, especially based on how divisive the art-styles and character designs of Luca, Turning Red, and (to an extent) Strange World ended up being.

"Lucian, don’t be afraid, we’ll make it through this."

my likely theory on some of the songs is that to me well it's likely that Magnifico would have a kick ass villain song and the other is well it would be very likely that we might get a reprise on More for Us and presumably maybe a dark reprise

[up][up][up] Yeah, that’s my feeling. The attempt is there, but it feels a bit timid so far, like they’re just dipping their toes. It’s a step in the right direction though, the classic "Pixar look" is getting old at this point.

It's also a meta-joke on Alan Tudyk voicing all these animal characters and rarely being able to actually speak.
