Old Complete Monster cleanup thread

Welcome to the new Complete Monster (CM) cleanup thread! This thread is where we clean up or cut already-existing entries.

If you're looking to add new entries, please see the approval thread.

IMPORTANT: Before you begin any discussions on this thread, please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List. Here, you'll find explanations of the criteria for the trope as well as our rules/procedures for approving and cutting candidates.

What goes through this thread?

    Examples
  • Cut requests. If you believe a CM has been approved and they do not count, this thread is where you propose their removal. To know how to go about this, please see the FAQ folder on the Administrivia page, where the process is explained in detail.
  • If we ever need to consider cutting multiple examples without individually reviewing them (e.g. if we discover widespread plagiarism with a particular troper's CMs), the initial discussion will be on this thread and we'll then escalate to the mod team (as described here) to get a formal consensus if we decide to recommend a mass cut.
  • If an entry was put on the wrong subpage/YMMV page, you may propose where they should be moved to.
  • Full rewrites of existing entries, including expansions, trims, and ground-up rewrites. If your rewrite is approved by the thread, feel free to add it to the drafts page so that other users can check grammar and the like before it is included with the rest of the weekly swaps.
  • If an entry on a work's YMMV page doesn't match the entry on the media subpage, you can bring it here to discuss which entry works better.

What does not go through this thread?

    Examples
  • New candidate proposals - as stated before, those are done on this thread.
  • Unapproved wicks - if a Troper encounters either of these kinds of wicks, they can be cut with no approval.
    • Any CM link on a non-YMMV page - as a YMMV trope, it should not be linked on those pages regardless of any cleanup effort. The only exception is if the wick is being used within the definition of another trope.
    • If an CM link on a YMMV page refers to an unapproved character. If it refers to an approved character on any such page, the wick can stay. On the other hand, if the unapproved character being linked to sounds like they might have promise (and you don't feel like checking it out for yourself), feel free to mention it on the approval thread - someone may already know why they don't count, or it could invite a brand new discussion!
  • Proposals for images, quotes, and videos of already-approved CMs - quotes and images are proposed on the approval thread, while videos can be uploaded normally as they are screened for approval by the moderation.
  • Crosswicking examples to YMMV pages - if an example has already been approved and added to the main page, you do not require any special permission to add the example to a work's YMMV page (assuming the work has a page already). If a YMMV page doesn't exist yet, then you can make it yourself, but either way, feel free to just add the example without asking.
  • Small changes to existing entries - these can simply be done on a Troper's own prerogative with no approval.
    • Spelling and grammar fixes.
    • Pothole changes.
    • Minor rewordings.
    • Spoiler tags.

While these changes do not require any kind of approval, it is requested that should you make any of these changes, you do one of the following:

  1. Make the same changes on the relevant Sandbox page, then add the Sandbox to the list at the bottom of the drafts page. This will add the Sandbox to the weekly swaps and ensure that the edits end up on the relevant locked page. If the Sandbox is already listed, then once you make the edits, your job is already done!
  2. If you don't know how the Sandboxes work or simply don't have the time to find it, then you can simply post on the thread about the changes you made. Someone else can then make the edit on the relevant Sandbox and add it to the weekly swaps.
  3. Alternatively, you can simply request that the change be made directly to the locked page on the Locked Pages thread. Members of this thread keep track of that one, so we will ensure that the changes are made in the Sandbox so that it doesn't get deleted during the next swap.

Again, these changes don't require any approval, but we prefer to keep the entries on the YMMV pages and the locked pages the same in order to avoid any miscommunication or errors between entries, so if you do make the change, we would greatly appreciate it if you could ensure the change is made on the locked page as well.

As a final note, we do not care what other sites have to say regarding whether or not a character counts. We have our own criteria and they have theirs for their CM equivalents; while they are similar, they are not exactly the same and should not be treated as such. Another site removing a character from their equivalent should not be a reason why a cut is proposed here, and if this is the case, it will likely lead to mod intervention.

Other than this, once again, welcome to the cleanup thread, and we look forward to your contributions!

Okay so my Fallout lore is a little rusty, but...

It's important to understand that there are many different types of Super Mutants. They all originate from FEV which Felden was the project lead of. He was working at the Mariposa military base where there was human experiments were happening. We don't know if these created any form of Super Mutants, but it was pretty bad and the soldiers (who went on to form the Brotherhood of Steel) revolted and killed the scientists (including Felden) out of disgust. The FEV vats at Mariposa were abandoned and later found by Richard Grey, later The Master, who created the Super Mutants as we know them on the West Coast.

But that's only in the West Coast. Hopping over to the East Coast in Fallout 3 we have a completely different line of Super Mutants originating from Vault 87, and given we saw Felden talking about using a Vault population for FEV testing, that Vault is clearly an end result of Felden's collaboration with Vault-Tec. Those Super Mutants are some of the most violent, and to put it simply absolutely torched the Capitol Wasteland.

West-Tek also seems to have had involvement in creating the Super Mutants in Appalachia, though so does current keeper Thomas Eckhart. I say seems because I haven't played 76 and am only getting this second hand, so anyone who has can comment on this more definitively.

On a side note, I did ponder if Felden was actually heinous enough, given he doesn't seem to have explicitly intended for the Super Mutants to end up how they did, but given that it's made clear that was supposed to be a Vault that's population opened, it's enough callousness to make the collateral count on Felden's rapsheet, and given he is part of the plan to drop the bombs, plus definitely conducting human experimentation, he's bad enough.

So in summary, various different types of Super Mutants have different origins (for another instance the Super Mutants in the Commonwealth were created by the Institute in their FEV experiments), but Felden was the project lead on what created FEV in the first place, (hence paved the way for megalomaniacs) and is definitely directly responsible for at least one strain. Both writeup and the person trying to correct the writeup are correct, but the writeup can be left as is, or be a bit more specific on which batches Felden is more responsible for.

YMMV.The Running Grave

  • Complete Monster: Jonathan Wace, Becca Pirbright, Dr Zhou and Taio Wace are cruel and love to lord their power over others, but Mazu Wace actually enjoys watching others suffer and stealing children from mothers, some teenagers, to raise as her own, before getting bored with them.

I don't think this has been approved.

As much as it pains me to do this, as he was one of my favorite EPs, I think we have to cut Andrew Tully. The latest movie gives him a backstory: he was once a devout Christian minister who lost his wife and children in an accident. Supplemental materials for the now seemingly-cancelled spinoff, The Abaddon Tapes, said more or less the same. I know that neither explicitly states that he mourned their deaths, but it sounds pretty disqualifying to me.

Sounds disqualifying, but what do you mean by "seemingly" cancelled ? Because if it’s cancelled, wouldn’t that put it in a non canon category ?

It’s just we’ve reinstated characters like Charon because the story of his families loss comes from a game that's not considered canon by the developers. And one of the reasons I see the Collector still keeping us because the third movie — which allegedly would have explored his troubled past, was ultimately cancelled as well.

Edit: I misread the post, NVM. I thought it said that his family was brought up in the cancelled material

By the way why is the Godzilla monsterverse before the Tohoverse. That seems bizzare to list Ghidorah's original appearances after that one.

Sure. How about this

  • Bastion, real name Sebastion Gilberti, is a seemingly-human enemy of all mutantkind, whose hatred for them extends into unbridled sadism. Bastion was born from a magical merging of Master Mold and the more sympathetic Nimrod into an organic, amnesiac being, and though raised by a compassionate human woman, Bastion still developed an egotistical, prejudiced desire to destroy mutants and Take Over the World. Creating "Zero Tolerance", Bastion used the operation to carry out the systematic kidnapping of, experimentation on, and execution of dozens of mutants, notably subjecting Professor X and the teenaged Jubilee to weeks of sensory deprivation and Mind Rape. Bastion's preferred method of targeting mutants is by framing them for acts of terrorism he himself commits, such as trying to slaughter a camp of his own followers and their families to pin it on Rogue; or by using a virus to force innocent mutants' powers to go into out of control and kill hundreds of humans around them. Bastion further creates "Prime Sentinels" by kidnapping and turning humans into cyborg sleeper agents, killing any of them who regain their sapience, and plans to transform all of humankind into these hollowed-out drones when he succeeds. Later reviving a variety of mutant haters, Bastion keeps them as his slaves even as some beg for death, then tries to annihilate 800,000 humans just to kill a pocket of mutants. Even when he discovers a future where mutants no longer exist, Bastion deliberately travels to the past so he can painfully, horrifically "evolve" millions of humans into mutants, just so he will always have mutants to torture and butcher.

Cut Tully

Well, I mentioned this on proposal thread, but here is update for Palpatine’s entry that partain to animated shows.

  • The Clone Wars, The Bad Batch & Rebels: Chancellor Palpatine, aka Darth Sidious, is the instigator of the Clone Wars and the Dark Lord of the Sith. Desiring an army of Force-users to serve his will, Sidious hired Cad Bane to kidnap Force-sensitive infants, so that Sidious could perform horrific and potentially fatal experiments upon them, coldly disregarding their possible deaths. When he felt that Asajj Ventress was growing too powerful, Sidious commanded Count Dooku to kill her, ignoring his protests and mockingly praising his apprentice for his "loyalty" when Dooku believed that he had carried out the order. Later, after deciding that his former apprentice, Darth Maul, had grown too powerful, Sidious attacked him on Mandalore, gleefully murdering Maul's brother, Savage Opress, and sadistically torturing Maul himself into submission, later using Maul in a plot to kill Mother Talzin. When Fives discovered Order 66—about which it is later revealed that the clone troopers who executed the order were fully aware of what they were made to do—Palpatine had him drugged into insanity to prevent the truth from being revealed, a plan which ended in Fives's death. When Yoda sets out on a vision quest, Sidious takes the opportunity to try and destroy the vulnerable Jedi Master, using Sith sorcery in an attempt to corrupt and kill Yoda. After proclaiming himself the emperor of the galaxy, Palpatine has Empire hunt for Force-sensitive children and use them in attempt to figure out the secret of immortality. Decades later, he attempted to tempt Ezra Bridger into using The World Between Worlds to return to his parents, which would give Palpatine control over time itself, to remake all of existence in his image. As always, Darth Sidious is a malevolent, sadistic monster who employs exceptionally cruel methods in his quest for power.

Thougts?

I saw Shadow Builder a short while back, and some of the information in the writeup is inaccurate. For one, the Shadowbuilder existed before "let there be light", so he was not an angel (although he's also stated to have manifested after God created light, I think that both are true, if that makes sense). Second, he did not kill his summoners, they were all killed by Michael Rooker's character after the summoning was completed. I admit, I do have some very slight doubts about his moral agency.

Current Writeup: The evil demon known as the Shadowbuilder was an angel who despised God for creating light and humanity. Massacring the sect who summoned him, the Shadow Builder aims to sacrifice a pure-hearted child to usher in Hell on Earth, stealing through his town to murder multiple people and taking their souls while torturing others. In one incident, the Shadowbuilder forces a man to murder his own wife and sends him after the heroes before capturing the child, Christopher, and attempting to murder him to open a portal to hell that will devour all humanity.

New Writeup: The Shadowbuilder is a demonic being that existed in the Void before God created light. Upon being summoned, the Shadowbuilder hunts down a pure-hearted child with the intent of sacrificing him, all while murdering and stealing souls and unleashing chaos and corruption upon the small town where the child resides. In one incident, he drives a man to murder his wife, then killing himself. Finally, he captures the child, Christopher, preparing to use his death to open a portal to the Void to undo creation.

I tried to just keep it close to the original writeup as I could, but it ended up kind of becoming its own thing.

Oh for reference the reason I didn't note Bastion's full name originally is because he very, very rarely uses it and it's treated more as a false identity than anything, but I think it's got a place in the write-up and thank you for the addition, mir!

Ok got a bit of a weird situation to bring up here, and it pertains to the utterly confusing world of Transformers continuity. Specifically, the Aligned continuity family...we have a bit of an issue: as of now, we have Transformers: War for Cybertron Megatron listed, who falls under the Aligned continuity. Issue is that Aligned continuity is also in theory where Transformers: Prime Megatron hails from, and that Megatron notoriously ends the show pulling a Heel–Face Turn.

Now, when WFC!Megs was proposed, the idea was Depending on the Writer because of the Broad Strokes of the Aligned continuity, which I'm fine with...buuuuut we've also got Aligned!Unicron listed whose write-up takes into account both his actions from WFC-related content and his actions in Prime. So it's not consistent with how we treated WFC-Prime Megatron as two different canons/characters.

Ultimately, I think the simplest solution is to just split up Unicron's current write-up into two: one for the WFC-related content, one for the Prime content. That way we're consistent and not saying "WFC Megatron is different than Prime Megatron; but Unicron is the same". If we do decide this, I'll be glad to handle the editing of the write-ups for Unicron.

Thoughts?

Just dropping in seeing as TFP has been brought up, about Unicron; during his final appearance in the cartoon film, his final action is to attempt to devour the All Spark which, in-universe is treated as devouring the very afterlife of the Cybertronians (since whenever someone dies, they become one with the All Spark, Megatron didn't because of his tampering with Dark Energon — Unicron's life blood.)

Would it be worth adding to his writeup? Once the split has occurred.

I'm okay splitting Unicron.

With more The Woman in White adaptations going up I wanna clean up my old writeup for the 1940s adaptation to amend some weird sentence structure:

Original:

  • 1940 adaptation Crimes At The Dark House, the nameless Spook taking the identity of "Sir Percival Glyde" is a grinning, cackling madman who murders his namesake by hammering a tent peg into his skull, all to impersonate him and inherit his estate. "Glyde" kills anyone who exposes his secret or so much as inconveniences him, from a corrupt doctor he hangs from a bell rope to the pretty young maid he strangles for wanting to elope with him. "Glyde" takes advantage of his Marital Rape License over his new bride Laurie the second he has her in bed, and even threatens to "break in" her sister as well. To gain Laurie's dowry, "Glyde" murders the mother of a local madwoman named Anne who looks just like Laurie, and passes Laurie as Anne to see her locked for the rest of her life in an asylum, while personally ensuring Anne herself freezes to death.

On Palpatine's animated writeup, him abandoning the clones and letting them get experimented on by Hemlock should probably be mentioned. It's pretty high scale, and has gotten major focus in the shows. Specifically, the section about Fives and order 66 could be edited, shortened a bit, to combine with the clone troopers getting left out to dry.

  • Crimes at the Dark House (1940 adaptation of The Woman in White): The nameless Spook taking the identity of "Sir Percival Glyde" is a grinning, cackling madman who murders his namesake by hammering a nail into his skull as he sleeps, all to impersonate him and inherit his estate. "Glyde" kills anyone who exposes his secret or so much as inconveniences him, from a corrupt doctor he hangs using a bell rope as a noose, to a smitten young maid he strangles to death while gloating "you wanted to be a bride, so you shall—a bride of death!"
