Man on Fire, according to the page description and laconic, seems to be about how easy people catch on fire. Basically, it is to people like how Made of Incendium is to objects. And interestingly enough, the former is much more older than the latter trope. But it seems like whenever I see this trope mentioned, it's usually just used for people who simply get set on fire or are on fire, which is pretty much chairs on fire. Or perhaps the most common use for it is people who die fiery deaths, with some of them falling under Kill It with Fire. Occasionally it might even be used for someone who's Wreathed in Flames. And like any trope, it too has its share of examples with little to no context. I think the problem with the trope is its name. It has the name that can be used for a variety of meanings; not really illustrating what the trope really is about. And it seems the main trope page itself barely mentions the purpose of the trope, which doesn't help too much either. I got my wick check and looking at 50 wicks out of 2416, it just pretty much shows exactly what I'm talking about:

  • Correctly used: 3/50
  • People being on fire/people being set on fire: 14/50
  • People dying fiery deaths/Kill It With Fire: 17/50
  • ZCE/Insufficient Contect: 7/50
  • Murky/Other: 9/50

As you can see here, I could barely find anything that fits the definition of the trope. It's pretty much dominated by people being set or killed by fire. I have a couple ideas on what to do with this:
  1. Merge the trope into Made of Incendium. Expand that to where it's people who could easily catch on fire and burn wildly, not just objects.
  2. Turn the Man on Fire page itself into a disambiguation page for other tropes such as Kill It with Fire, Wreathed in Flames, Made of Incendium, Spontaneous Human Combustion, Infernal Retaliation, Playing with Fire, Incendiary Exponent, and of course, the Man on Fire movie.

Then Korgoth throws a glass of alcohol all over him, cuing another series of screams. Then he sets the alcohol ablaze; no reaction shots this time, the guy just runs around screaming for a bit then falls over dead. Just another boring bar-fight for Korgoth.

Paging ~Matthew L Mayfield to the thread.

Anyway, leaning toward merging into Made of Incendium and expanding that trope, as well as disambiguating Man on Fire after the merge, because I don't think there's that significant of a difference between "objects that easily catch on fire" and "people who easily catch on fire" since the end result (something or someone easily catching on fire) is pretty much the same.

Edit: Also, the image is misuse because the sign is warning against self-immolation instead of being about people easily catching on fire. It doesn't look like it went through Image Pickin'.

Another edit: This is already described as a subtrope of Made of Incendium, so it seems more like a case of The Same, but More Specific ("Made of Incendium, but with a human") instead of merely being a Ridiculously Similar Trope, so I'm even more in favor of a merge.

I don't think it's TSBMS; a human body being set on fire is way more primal and visceral than, say, a cellphone catching on fire.

Which is to say I think a human running around conscious and enflamed is a legit horror trope and we should pivot to that definition, never mind the "easily catch on fire" part.

I could get behind keeping the name the same and ditching the part about the person on fire catching on fire easily. Less work, and it would be neither The Same, but More Specific nor ridiculously similar to Made of Incendium (though we'd obviously need change the "subtrope of" text to either "see also" or "compare").

Retracting the merge vote in favor of expanding the definition.

Edit: Considering expanding the definition would cause the amount of correct examples to go from including just the contents of the first folder to also including most (if not all) of the second and third folders, I'm tempted to just update the description and close if we go that route.

I can get behind it being used as a horror trope like the last two posts mentioned. I'm not against the idea of expanding it. But my main concern is it's still used as a pothole magnet for anything that wouldn't be related to the redefinition should we come to it. I've seen it used in so many places that would apply to Kill It with Fire.

Whenever I seen it used as Man on Fire, it doesn't really mention the people running around, but either it's people who die quickly after being set ablaze or dying in fiery explosions. And of course it's potholed onto any weapon that uses fire to kill people or any other of the aforementioned tropes I put in the OP. I'm just concerned the name might come across as vague.

But if the name does get kept, I do wonder if it could be made a Super-Trope for all those other tropes I mentioned?

Edit: Of course not all the other tropes I mentioned. But definitely some

It wouldn't be a supertrope to all of them (especially not Made of Incendium for reasons already explained), but some of them might be potential subtropes.

Favoring disambig and expanding relevant tropes if necessary.

Not super confident Burning For Horror is distinct enough from Kill It with Fire, unless made into a symbolism trope.

Just out of curiosity, where would metaphorical uses of people on fire fall? (For example the cover art for Wish You Were Here, where it's supposed to represent getting burned in the music industry)

I'm leaning towards expanding, though maybe renaming could work.

I can see the burning alive aspect being distinct enough from Kill It with Fire if the trope focuses on how burning alive is particularly agonizing and painful. Renaming it would probably help make it more distinct like Burning For Horror, Burned Alive, or Burning Is Agonizing.

The trope description does also mentions it can be played for comedy, although by the wick check it seems like people don't use it for that. Not sure if we should get rid of that, keep it or separate it to its own trope.

[up][up][up]Another way an expanded Man on Fire would be distinct enough from Kill It with Fire would be the fact that the latter involves something or someone intentionally being set on fire. The former could happen that way, but it could also involve fires that weren't started deliberately.

And as I said, I'm against renaming if we expand the definition because we probably wouldn't need to clean wicks (or at least not most of them) if we expand it while keeping the name the same, so renaming would just leave us with unnecessary work.

[up]I thought Kill It with Fire is specifically for (often Dark) creatures who are particularly susceptible to burning, or one that can only be Killed Off for Real using fire, and not just any instances of people being deliberately set on fire.

[up][up][up] By the wick check it doesn't seem like that many ZCE, so I agree a rename may not be necessary.

[up][up] I thought that too, but then I found tropes like Burn the Undead, Weak to Fire, and Fire Keeps It Dead and they seem to cover that much more specifically. Kill It with Fire just seems like a general "fire used as a weapon" trope.

It's possible that Kill It with Fire may have issues of its own, but that's outside the scope of this thread. But anyway, what I was getting at is that an expanded Man on Fire could involve someone being on fire without someone or something deliberately setting them on fire, meaning it wouldn't necessarily overlap with any tropes that involve weaponizing fire.

[up]but that's pretty chairsy. so what if a person is on fire, especially if it's by any possible means?

I feel like there are two possible useful tropes:

  • self-immolation for political purposes (going off of Synch's point about the shocking nature of it), but that's covered by Self-Immolation.
  • the pseudoscientific myth of people spontaneously catching on fire and combusting, which is covered by Spontaneous Human Combustion

Hmmm, the more I look at this the more I'm not seeing what this covers that isn't already covered by other tropes. I think disambig-ing across the tropes listed in the OP (and including Self-Immolation) makes the most sense.

"I think a human running around conscious and enflamed is a legit horror trope" <- you mean this? I'm not sure what this means in practice, is the issue.

For comparison, Buried Alive is not horror specific and covers any time a person is buried alive. However, it is often used for horror as the page image shows. But the two aren't separated likely because they will manifest the same regardless: with a character probably panicking, screaming, yelling, etc. How it shows up in works doesn't differ.

What does a "person set on fire but horrific" look like in practice that differentiates it from the slew of other person set on fire tropes, like Burn the Witch! and Self-Immolation? (you can even throw in Murder by Cremation and Cooked to Death to if the work has a shot of the person in the furnace/stove on fire)

If what we're talking about is the innate fear humans have towards fire, that'd be covered by Primal Fear.

By “horror trope” I did not mean “it only shows up in horror”, but it plays on the innate freakiness of the situation. Indeed like Buried Alive.

Self-Immolation, Burn the Witch! etc would be more specific setups. [down]I thought <this statement made it clear but supertrope

[up]again, i'm asking what an example would look like in practice that would be distinct from the tropes we currently have. what does "person on fire is horrific" look like in practice that is not covered by existing tropes and would warrant us creating a distinct trope?

sorry to keep harping on this, genuinely can't see the vision, is all
