Had the young child been awake, the creature that loomed over his bed would have brought him to a screaming panic. Bones far too long to be considered a person, with ashen white skin, stretched over it like some kind of mockery of how a person SHOULD look. Beady yellow eyes stare down at the youngling, sunken deep in the skull and glowing. Teeth, sharp and thin and horribly mismatched, clacking and clattering in eager anticipation of a meal. Hands with fingers as long as its forearm clenching and unclenching, its mouth opening wide enough to swallow the child whole-

"Hey."

The creature twists its head quickly to the door frame. Standing there was an older boy, who shared the same hair color, eye color, and face shape as the young girl the beast loomed over. Slung over his shoulder was a golden, glowing baseball bat, which he was idly tapping on his shoulder, the only sound aside from the young girl murmuring and turning over in her sleep, oblivious to all around her.

"I'm gonna give you 10 seconds to get away from my little sister before I decide you look good enough to break my previous record in how many hits I can give a Boogieman before it dies." He pauses and then grins. "Thirty-eight, by the way."

The creature, a Boogieman, hisses and scuttles down onto the ground, eyes glowing brighter and its body shaking like an angry snake. Preparing to attack.

The boy smirked. "Batter up, mother fu-" He swung his bat, it connected with the beast, and the battle began.

...

Welcome to Knightlight.

The things that go bump in the night are real. Boogiemen are cruel, evil, wicked beasts born from nightmares and fears of the Younglings. They feed on the fears, the dreams, and sometimes, the children themselves. Sometimes, a crack in the door to let in the hall light, the stuffed animal given to them when they were much younger, and a security blanket are enough to keep them safe, but ultimately, they're only temporary. What handles the Boogiemen for good?

The Knightlights.

When a child is scared, they will associate a person with whom they feel the safest, more often than not, a family member, a babysitter, or the like. Those people will be granted a special power brought upon by dreams, like how the Boogiemen are made from darkness and fear and nightmares. With this arsenal, the Knightlight can fight off the Boogiemen that threaten their guardian, and keep them and their innocence safe.

However, some Knightlights are needed to group to defeat creatures of immense power, since Boogiemen can become much stronger than one can handle.

With an arsenal of magic and a fierce desire to protect, will you pick up the mantle and become a Guardian of Innocence?

...

Welcome everyone to a new Roleplay, Knightlights, Guardians of Innocence. In this one, you'll be playing in modern day to protect a Guardian child, who has bestowed upon you magical powers because they feel that safe to you. You have before you magical prowess to beat these things back. Perhaps you have a magical Baseball bat because your little brother associates you with Baseball. Maybe you fight alongside a summonable Kodiac Bear, that takes the form of the stuffed bear you got your daughter when she was a baby. Maybe blasters and ray guns, because your cousin plays pretend with you and thinks of you as a real, genuine Space Hero.

The world is a scary place out there. But you can make a little bit brighter for them.

  • Name: Anne Werner
  • Age: 25
  • Appearance: A slender woman standing at a height of 6'2". Gentle features and countenance, having a fatigued but kindhearted appearance. Often dresses in plain clothes, preferring not to draw attention to herself.
  • Charge Name & Relation: Robin Werner, Daughter.
  • Knightlight Powers & Weapons:
    • Oddborn: Anne's own closest companion and gift to her young daughter, a psychic teddy bear with a dedication to protecting his charges. Oddborn has the telekinetic strength equivalent to that of a fit man, and can either fight while being held by Anne or move about by his own power. However, Oddborn is a tulpa empowered by Anne herself—should she be knocked unconscious, Oddborn will fall limp by extension until she reawakens.
    • Shielding Embrace: Anne's daughter associates her with warm hugs and protective comfort, so as a Knightlight Anne has the ability to conjure powerful shields of defensive energy around her and whoever she hugs. These shields weaken according to their target's discomfort; if the one Anne is trying to protect is too stressed or uncomfortable, and her embrace isn't enough to comfort them, then the barrier will be ineffective.
    • Cutting Reprimand: Although a gentle soul, Anne has toughened significantly after becoming a mother, and as such her very authority has become empowered by becoming a Knightlight. By pointing her finger towards a Boogeyman or any other threat and giving it a firm command, Anne can physically injure or weaken them from a distance as if attacking them psychically. Depending on where she points, she can strike the vital parts of her enemies to disable or severely wound them, or she can strike their minds with fear enough to temporarily paralyse them—enabling her allies to take advantage of the distraction and finish them off.
  • History: As a young girl, Anne had a difficult life, with parental figures who outright neglected her and only a scruffy teddy bear as her lone companion in the world. Even in her adulthood as an unfortunately single mother to a six-year-old girl, Anne has kept a hold of this bear, and in turn has gifted it to her young daughter Robin so that she won't get lonely either. Now finding herself in the position of Robin's Knightlight, Anne is more than eager to defend her only daughter from the horrors of the night, and with her own old teddy now fighting alongside her, she sincerely hopes that Robin will grow up to feel more loved than she ever did in her own youth.

Name: Kathy Maddan

Age: 21

Appearance: She is 6'4" and very fit. In everyday life, she wears practical clothing with fashion as a secondary concern. She has short black hair and brown eyes. Basically a hooded jacket, tshirt, and pants. Her shoes follow this trend, often wearing sneakers or flat boots.

As a knightlight, she looks like her normal self in some ways except for adding the dream aspects which make her look humanoid. In this form, she wears a gray hooded jacket with the hood up. Over her entire face is a red mask that has holes for her eyes. Her eyes are black in color. Under the hood (if it were to be removed, there is long ankle length "hair" that is made of red threads. This hair can be controlled like her thread powers. Somehow her hood can contain all of her hair (don't think about it to hard lol). Her pants are black and she wears a red miniskirt as well (yes that is pants and a skirt being worn together). Her shoes are combat boots.

Charge Name and Relation: Taylor Hayes, best friend who she regards as a brother.

Knightlight powers, weapons, etc.:

Note: I apologize in advance if her powers seem OP. I'm modifying the Orig version to be less powerful. Trust me, the original version is way more powerful!

  • Weapon: A bladed lance with a hole on the end of the handle to attach her threads to. The guard is shaped so that she can not slide her hand onto the blade by accident, as well as stopping enemies from sliding up the blade. The lance is a foot taller than she is tall (7'4"), and 3/4 of the weapon is blade. The blade is narrow and tapers down to a sharp tip on the end. Notably, she can always recall her blade to her own hands safely even without thread attached to it, but it's MUCH easier with thread though! This is bound to her. It is sharp enough to cut her own threads if she wants too. She can also make knives with holes on the end as well.

  • Corrupt reflections: She can use the traits/weapons/dangerous/scary parts of something that is the nightmares and/or fears of the target. She can target multiple targets at once, but it becomes less effective overall. A single target is far more powerful, but is most effective against the target. This can be used in multiple ways like scaring others and can be an effective weapon. If she targets too many beings at once, the result is too ineffective to be of good use in most cases. The more of the reflection she takes on trait wise, the more powerful it is but this also changes her own reflection faster. She will naturally become uncorrupt with enough time. She should not have gotten this power in the first place...

Every time she uses this power, she has to account for her own corrupt reflection as well. For each reflection she makes, her own will also grow in power and gets more corrupted, but at a lesser rate compared to what she makes. If she uses this too often OR uses too much power, she will start to turn into her own nightmare... and this is why she must be careful when using this. For this reason she prefers to use her second power more often.

Should her own reflection get too corrupted, her threads will change accordingly in appearance. She risks temporarily losing control of said reflection until the corruption is used up (also, she looks corrupted and nightmareish looking as well).

  • Threads: She can make and control durable threads from her body. These threads are sticky much like spider silk is. Normally, it look like red sewing thread. When corrupted, it's black in color. The threads have multiple uses (utility and combat). The threads can be shaped/formed into various things which will function as the shape it is to some degree, depending on the level of details. The color of the form will always be red/black.

For example a poorly formed sword will be dull, but can still cut and would be a good bludgeoning tool rather than cutting. A decently formed sword will be reasonably sharp. Enough to cause harm and functions well enough. A highly formed sword will be very sharp and keep the shape and function for a long time, but getting the finer details down is not instant. In most cases, a decent amount of details/decently formed will do the job.

History:

She's an only child and the only person she really befriended was Taylor. Taylor is not related to her, yet both have no siblings and get along with each other. They consider each other unofficial siblings. He is unaware of her status as a knightlight, and that's probably for the better.

She did however, see something that mortals should not have seen. How? Well... she refuses to talk about it, something about not wanting to think about that too hard. You can't blame her for that. This same event made her a nightlight. She's very pragmatic and practical.

  • Name: Fern Lamb

  • Age: 16

  • Appearance: “5,3”

  • Charge Name and Relation: Aden Lamb, little brother

  • Knightlight powers, weapons, etc.:

  • Me, I, and Myself: She can go and clone herself, each clone having the same Intelligence, but the clones do not have the powers she; can clone herself a lot but the more clones there, the less time the clones can stay and, she starts to get headaches which get more strong the more clones she makes, after some time the clones come flying back to the original where everything the clone learn and this including injuries too.

  • Junk and More: Fern uses an Aluminum baseball bat as a weapon, her clones taking around other weapons like knives, frying pans, and other household objects.

  • History: She is just any other sister and brother combo: she liked to prank and mess around her young brother, but when she heard him talking about the bogeyman, she planned to scare him in his sleep, but when she walked in, she sees a blazing fire and an inhuman beast towering over him, she grabs a baseball bat and fights off the beast where it leaves her and her brother with the fire, the mom and dad came in as the two ran out of the house with there mom and dad, as the fire takes the house, she and her brother told then about the monster but just said that it could be just from faulty wiring, Fern now knowing that they are real and her brother is not the only one getting attacked by this thing, now working as a knightlight she would let any other child experience it again.

  • Name: Barry Summers
  • Age: 29
  • Appearance: Despite his current state as a wandering scholar of light desperately clinging to the more and more rare infusions of Knightlight power, Barry tries to look the part of a respectable and trustworthy young adult who can keep your kids safe if you need a night off. Sturdy jeans, polo shirts, clean-shaven with brown hair kept trimmed to the neck. The only personal stylings that could suggest any kind of personal flourish is a verdigrised copper shirt pin depicting a sword.
  • Charge Name and Relation: The Oath of the Sitter is an odd twist on a Knightlight's usual system of guardianship. Under the Oath, the Knightlight has no set Charge, instead drawing temporary power from those who don't have their usual guardian around to empower. Perfect for an itinerant and travelling babysitter; though replacing a personal relation with professional duty brings complications to the power.
  • Knightlight powers, weapons, etc.:
    • Tarnished Blade: What once was a conjured sword of gleaming silver has been allowed to fade to a duller but no less sharp weapon. This is ostensibly an austerity measure to preserve Barry's power now that getting babysitting work to fulfill his Oath is getting more and more difficult, but he also feels like he no longer deserves a glorious weapon.
  • History: When Barry first transacted the Oath and took up his light-forged blade it was when he was thirteen and defending a new neighbor. Almost immediately, he figured out that there was a responsibility to use this new power to defend the defenseless. For about eight years, Barry was the babysitter de'jour of his hometown and prided himself on always keeping his charges safe with valiant light. But eight years into his tenure and eight years ago, an unthinkable accident happened.
    • New kid whose family had just moved into town, mom was out for the weekend and the dad needed a sitter on short notice. By the time Barry arrived to the house the dad was already gone and had left the house unlocked. The kid was nervous and meek, the kind of kid for whom a Bogeyman visitation was an inevitability especially with the parents out of the picture for the night. As the two whiled away the time before the kid's bedtime, Barry did the usual show of trying to instill a sense of safety and the seeds of his preferred shape of Knightlight power. The kid was put to bed, Barry went to the back porch to watch the stars and listen to music and soon enough the tingling in his teeth and the tug of the Oath let him know his charge needed help. He rushed in to the darkened child's room, blade flash-forging itself from power and he ran the grotesque-looking silhouette through. The child, pacified by the protector's appearance, settled in to sleep leaving Barry to question why the Bogeyman he just slayed hadn't vanished. It's then he scented the smell of vomit and cheap beer on the corpse and with lucidity running wild he knew what he had done. He covered it up, pushed the body somewhere it would be found but all too easily labelled an accident and stayed with the kid the rest of the weekend until mom got home. He didn't take payment and as soon as he got home he started packing up to leave town.
    • For the eight years hence, Barry has been a wanderer taking up babysitting jobs to fulfill his Oath while trying to search out answers about the Knightlight; its nature, its connection to the Bogeymen and why that benevolent light let what happened that night happen.

It's clearly a case of backroom political albumizing.

  • Name: Buster Miller
  • Age: 4
  • Appearance: Buster is a large, well-groomed golden retriever, with a blue bandanna tied around his neck over his collar.
  • Charge Name and Relation: Madison Miller, his owners' daughter. He effectively considers Maddie a little sister.
  • Knightlight powers, weapons, etc.:
    • New Tricks: The power of the Knightlight has given Buster increased intelligence compared to normal canines - in particular, allowing him to actually speak with humans.
    • Big Dog: His physical body has also been enhanced. Buster, naturally, can't hold weapons, so he fights by biting and clawing. His teeth and nails glow and appear to turn metallic when he fights.
    • Good Dog: Buster's presence is highly calming, especially to kids. Despite his size, people generally find Buster non-threatening. Except for Boogiemen, obviously.
  • History: Orphaned as a pup, Buster was picked up at a shelter by a couple with a newborn baby. As with most dog, he bonded quickly with his new family, and could often be found happily nuzzling his new baby friend. They grew together, and by the time she was 3, it was a given that Buster would sleep in Maddie's bed. Naturally, when the Boogieman came for her, she clung to Buster for protection. Buster, of course, protected her. The rest, as they say, is history.
