Marvel Comics cleanup and maintenance

Go To

A thread offering assistance and support for tropers covering Marvel's many, many stories and characters.

This includes the shared Marvel Universe, but not the cultural Disney juggernaut known as the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). One of our aims is to disentangle tropes and characters from the MCU adaptations from pages about their source material.

This scope does cover Marvel comic, manga and webcomic stories, characters and tropes that are unconnected to that shared Marvel Universe - e.g. their licensed Star Wars, Alien and Predator stories.

As of September 2021, there were about 27,000 Marvel comics published across 4,900 or so different series. They started publishing in the 1940s as Timely Comics, then became Atlas Comics and - eventually - Marvel. As a consequence, Marvel have a lot of Comic Book and Characters pages on the site (and have recently started publishing Webcomics as well).

The sheer scale of this means that there's so much material (with dozens of new comics added each week) that no one troper is likely to own or read all of it - especially as there are big gaps in what's available digitally or reprinted (and licensed characters and legal issues mean that certain stories may never be reprinted at all).

And that can make troping their shared universe pretty tricky - even Marvel's own creative teams have been known to lose track now and then.

We've got tropers busily revising existing pages, while others add new information weekly as new comics are published. This thread's here to help with any queries that generates, to focus work on particular pages that could use improvement, and to help ensure that we tackle works page names and other aspects in a consistent way that makes sense to readers navigating between different Marvel-related pages (as well as following best practice for the wiki as a whole).

Feel free to post here to draw attention to relevant posts or threads elsewhere - e.g. if examples, images, captions and quotes, or spoiler policies for these pages are under discussion.
There are existing threads and standard guidelines for those topics (e.g. Image Pickin' has its own, very structured, process), and this shouldn't duplicate any of that - but tropers reading this thread may wish to vote or comment once they know about those discussions.
    ComicBook page guidance
  • If there's a consistent creative team, they should be named in the introduction. Ideally, include inkers and colorists as well as other artists.
  • The page image doesn't always have to be the first issue cover.
  • Pages for arcs, runs and events should include the relevant titles and issue numbers.
  • Pages should include start and end dates in the introduction
  • Links regarding particular characters (e.g. Wolverine) should go to their Characters page, not their ComicBook page.

    Character page guidance
  • As a rule, characters in Marvel Universe continuity only get one Character page profile, regardless of how many different series they appear in. However:
    • Alternate Universe and Bad Future variants may justify their own profile, and sometimes the same can be said for Split Personality scenarios.
    • It may be appropriate to add a character to a relevant Character page with an intro and a link to their full profile on another page (e.g. many villains have been major characters in several different series)
  • Creation of any new Character Specific Pages, and proposals to merge any of them back into other pages, should go via the Character Specific Pages cleanup thread, but it's worth posting here as well.
  • If you're splitting, merging or moving characters between different Character pages, it's worth checking with the Character Page Cleanup thread as well as posting here.

I’m always for a character page split. But if it means merging other pages I don’t think it’s worth it. If we can do it without merging, I vote to split

We can always build on those pages

Well the reason I was trying to merge the pages was to cut down on folders. one of the projects I've been working on on and off were fixing the big team pages. All of the Avengers members pages got merged back into the main Avengers page and completely broke the indexing for the page, also it just looks bad. But when I made Sandbox.Avengers Title Team it was also to long, so I couldn't think of any solutions and let it lie for awhile.

Edit: Never mind some of that reason, I just double-checked, it's not too long. The main reason I was doing it was for synergy and to try and make it easier to navigate.

I've made a sandbox for Sandbox. The Avengers 1963, but I'm having trouble figuring out the main writers on the title. Would anyone know who the main writers are? I've got Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, Roy Thomas, Steve Englehart, and Jim Shooter with significant runs, But I'm not sure who else. Any help would be appreciated.

I am also thinking of merging ComicBook. The Avengers Lee And Kirby and ComicBook.Caps Kooky Quartet into the page, but I'm not sure if that's a good idea.

The original Ultimate X-Men pages are now at Ultimate X-Men (2001) so that they don't clash with the relaunch. The Ultimate X Men comic page is a redirect, at least until the wicks are updated.

I guess we'll switch it to a disambig after that?

I launched Ultimate X-Men (2024), as the comic launches today, and I changed Ultimate X Men over to a disambig page and changed the index links over.

The same thing should probably be done to Ultimate Spider-Man

So it seems like nearly every single solo page we have is about to be nuked. I’m not sure what to do, as unlike all of the other franchises this one shares characters a lot more.

[up] It'd probably be a good idea to inquire about what should be done on the Cleanup Thread: Character Specific Pages thread.

Short version: not only must the character folder be at least 40,000 characters in length, but the parent page must be 250,000 characters long and other options must be tried first.

Ugh 250,000 byte pages are a nightmare to edit but okay. Does this also effect group pages or just character specific ones?

[up][up]I tried to get it lowered to 100-150K, but people didn't go for it. I feel like most people their honestly hate CSP, and would be fine if we just banned them all. All I wanted was a more air-tight procedure put in place.

I also launched a page for The Spectacular Spider-Men.

[up] Oh. Oof. That. Fans are not happy with how Weismann has written Miles in that, lemme tell you. Having him cheat on fan-favourite Starling after Cody Zigler assured worried fans he wasn't going to break them up in Miles Morales: Spider-Man (2022)? Not a good look.

If we’re going to erase X-men csp, might I suggest a centreal core members page? One that would include

Nightcrawler Storm Colossus Kitty Pryde Rogue Gambit Bishop Jubilee Rachel Summers

I’m assuming characters like Psylocke, Logan, Emma, Magik and the O5 have are fine since they are part of bigger character pages

I've added placeholder redlinks for the newly announced post-Krakoa X-Men books to Unreleased Works - some in the first category, the ones where all we have is a title in the last category.

  • I figure Phoenix gets a 2024 suffix because it clashes with a book (nothing to do with Marvel).
  • ComicBook.NYX currently covers two series — NYX (2003) and NYX: No Way Home. We might want to hard split them and turn the page into a disambig for them plus the new ComicBook.NYX 2024

As for the rest...

Exceptional X-Men is the only title that's not been used before. And all the others (Wolverine, Storm, X-Force, X-Factor etc.) can potentially just disambig by year as usual.

I'm personally wary about creating a page for the From the Ashes era branding because we don't know if it's going to be a mega-arc with overall tropes, like Krakoa, or just a label to stick on a bunch of loosely-connected books for the start of the relaunch. It's also another recycled title, so if we do create a page it needs a disambig to separate it from the Claremont-era collected arc.

Double post as the original Marvel Ultimate line's Ultimatum is in Image Pickin' at the moment.

It's gone to a Crowner vote, but not many actual votes yet - and the option with the most upvotes also has the most downvotes, so is in second place due to ratio.

Okay both X-Corp and X-Terminators have only one folder each with the rest being links to others. Should we move those folders to other pages?

I think we could move Thornn to Morton’s and Whiz Kid to Sword

[up]I guess that can work. Tbh since they have actual comics and aren't just sub-pages, I would like to keep them, but maybe they can just be reformatted as indexes.

On a unrelated note, I cleaned up the Wolverine page, moving the character-specific tropes to Marvel Comics: Logan, and reformatted the page to be explicitly about the comic and its various runs.

So I've done some cleanup on Fantastic Four, and I launched Fantastic Four (Lee & Kirby) and Fantastic Four (1998). The thing is that Fantastic Four (1961) and Fantastic Four (1998) both need help with their intros. If anyone could help out with those, that would be great.
