I don't know, really.
Originally I tried limiting myself to three because keeping track of multiple layers seemed like too much, then I ended up using over twenty for one project and I had to admit it turned out better than any of my previous attempts. But most of them weren't actually visible in the final draft, and I'll probably be able to pare them down with more experience.

That depends. I'm on digital painting, and the file sizes from the Sketchbook app on my tablet makes it heavy from the layers and the resolution.

I'd say five or 6 is my personal limit before I have to start merging or cutting,these are permanent layers I'm thinking about not temporary ones
