=∞ | aequalis infinitum

It is 2022.

In a small town in Pennsylvania, something otherworldly has taken control. The once populated locale, famed for its circular structure and central tourist hotspot Hush Lake, has become a ghost town and avoided area for 20 years. Malrick is lost, with all curious persons who enter the town's limits disappearing as soon as they cross its borders.

Men, women, children, doctors, firefighters, military, tourists. All who enter are never seen again, with no trace of their existence. The streets are empty to outside observers, but the vacant stores are still stocked with goods. The roads have no cars, and not a single living thing beyond the grass and foliage is present.

A great Entity has arrived. Capturing the town, enslaving its residents. Turning the dead into undead thralls; dangerous and insane but trapped in unending grief over their past lives. In an invisible slipspace beyond the town's borders, the sky is blood red and the ground is dry and dead. The rain falls black as soot, corroding whatever it touches and reanimating corpses that are drenched by it. The dead cannot die, and rise up no matter what attempt is made to ensure otherwise. On the outskirts of this inescapable parallel world, a handful of brave survivors huddle in abandoned buildings and try to sneak past these undead Sorrows to gather supplies. But near the centre of the town—near Hush Lake—reality breaks down and logic ceases to be.

The Entity resides beneath Hush Lake, having corrupted its waters into undead-spawning Rot. The Entity known as 'Mother', who speaks in dreams to the living and the dead alike. The Entity who issues out her siren's cry, calling for the dead to bathe in the lakewater. To ascend, to become devoted to her. To become her children.

But there are still survivors on the outskirts.

They are few. They are scattered. They are hungry, they are tired, they are desperate, and they are in anguish. But in all of them who keep fighting to stay alive against the undead hordes and the great Entity, there is a hope. A chance to fight, to win—to reclaim Malrick and escape this twisted hell of a town.

This hope is all anyone has, and all that keeps these survivors going. The opportunity to kill the unkillable, and finally put down a cruel god.

EXPLANATION:

Aequalis Infinitum (stylised as =∞) is a survival horror RP set in the circular town of Malrick, which is currently being trapped in a hellish slipspace by a cosmic entity beyond human understanding. With the undead hordes roaming about unable to be put down, this RP will be mostly focused on the constant scramble for survival in an unrelentingly oppressive environment, and the bonds that may be forged between people in their fight to get through each day alive. There are no superpowers, paranatural origins, or advanced technology to save the player characters. All they have is their wits and their sheer grit to live; along with whatever one can feasibly salvage from the urban jungle that is Malrick while having to constantly duck past the vast crowds of walking dead.

This RP will contain likely disturbing imagery and surreal cosmic horror, as well as generally be rather grim and oppressive in tone. However, I intend to have moments of brevity that won’t undercut the severity of the situation, and hope that the solidarity of the people who stick together will be enough for them to push through and achieve the impossible. The ultimate goal is to somehow make it to the central lake of Malrick to find and kill the god imprisoning the town. That means making it past not only the undead, but whatever reality-breaking anomalies that linger in the territory of Hush Lake. You’ll need some extraordinarily hardy or insane people to even begin to pull this off, so if you come into the RP with the intention of doing so then bear in mind that even if your character is the toughest sonuvabitch this side of Pennsylvania it will still take a lot of effort just to gather enough resources. Especially if other players and NPCs are similarly battling for supplies.

Character death will only be possible with given permission from the player controlling said character, but mild to moderate injuries remain under my jurisdiction. More severe and disabling wounds will have to be agreed upon as they come, since they could impede the capabilities of a given player character and affect future encounters potentially permanently.

TERMINOLOGY:

     SORROWS
The undead; corpses reanimated by Rot and who wander about Malrick as a result. Sorrows are practically immortal, and though they can be temporarily knocked out with enough force (such as gunshots to the head or heavy bludgeoning) they will always get back up unharmed when unobserved for long enough. It is difficult to know when exactly a Sorrow will reanimate after being knocked out, so it is generally advised to keep a close eye on their felled corpses after taking one down—the undead seem unable to reanimate when one’s entire focus is on them. Sorrows wander about without direction or focus, typically trapped in behavioural routes such as a work commute or recreational habits, often reflective of their most valued desires in their life before undeath. When encountering a survivor, however, Sorrows will be compelled to bite their neck in order to inject their body with Rot enough to kill and transform them into another Sorrow. Sorrows populate the Outskirts most of all, tending to be replaced by their enlightened counterparts in the inner parts of Malrick—however, their listless state of being makes them generally safer and easier to avoid than their mortal variations. Still, tensions are always high even with only a single Sorrow in the area.
     DROWNED SORROWS
An ‘enlightened’ variation of undead distinguished as being Sorrows who have bathed in the waters of Hush Lake. These types of Sorrows look closer to living humans than their unenlightened counterparts, and tend to flock together in groups of a dozen or so searching for others to spread the word of Mother towards. Drowned Sorrows behave like cultists, and possess more direction and higher intelligence than regular Sorrows—they are in many ways indistinguishable from deranged human opponents, but unlike their regular counterparts they do not possess the curse of immortality. A fatal wound to the heart or head will be enough to collapse them into a pile of Rot, but anything less they will simply regenerate from at an inhuman speed. The longer one takes to kill a Drowned Sorrow, the more they will mutate according to the wounds inflicted on them; some becoming horrendous creatures indescribable in text before they can be finally taken down. Drowned Sorrows have greater numbers closer to Hush Lake than in the outer limits of the city, though patrols still pass through the Outskirts on occasion for thoroughness’ sake.
     ROTFALL
A weather phenomenon indicated by blood red clouds and black, tar-like rainfall. This type of rain is corrosive and stings bare skin when exposed in it, and excessive exposure can begin to weaken and eventually kill any living creature left out in it for too long. A person or animal ‘drowned’ in this way by Rotfall will reanimate into a Sorrow in roughly 5 to 30 minutes depending on the intensity of the downpour, as the rain corrodes into their skin and puppeteers their body by expelling their blood and replacing it with Rot. Sorrows possess Rot within their bodies in place of saliva also, and use it in order to quickly kill and convert their victims into new Sorrows without having to expose them to Rotfall. Regular, non-acidic rain still falls often in Malrick besides its corrupted variant, providing a source of drinking water for survivors enough to get by when it occurs.
     SIREN’S CALL
Every so often, an unearthly noise resembling that of a siren mixed with a human cry fills the air from the direction of Hush Lake, signifying an impending Rotfall event and warning any living survivors to take shelter quickly. Any Sorrows hiding in buildings will come out into the streets in order to shower in the Rot, giving survivors an opportunity not only to shelter safely but also search nearby buildings for supplies without fear of being jumped. The Siren’s Call lasts for around one minute before the noise ceases, but Rotfalls themselves last anywhere between twenty minutes to three hours, so survivors must prepare to bunker down should they hear this eerie signal while out scavenging. Some Sorrows are compelled to venture off towards Hush Lake whenever they hear the Siren's Call, only to be replaced by Drowned Sorrows upon returning. It is assumed therefore that the purpose of the Siren's Call is to signal particular Sorrows to become enlightened at Hush Lake.
     MOTHER
The unearthly Entity who resides in Hush Lake. Speaking occasionally in dreams, she speaks in a broken voice and refers to herself as possessing ‘aspects’ separate from her main body; such as Mother’s Sight and Mother’s Hands. These aspects manifest as autonomous anomalies which roam about Malrick as dangerous obstacles—her Sight appears as floating intersecting orbs which can revolve in a spherical range of view, and her Hands appear as spectral limbs which snake about the streets at ground level to try and grab at unenlightened Sorrows and survivors alike who her Sight manages to spot and take note of. Mother feels attracted to those who seem lost and directionless, and so she has an instinct to take a hold of her own undead or living humans that she sees with the intent of dragging them all the way to Hush Lake (likely killing the latter in the process). Mother’s Aspects, which are poorly recorded, thankfully seem to reside primarily in the inner city rather than the Outskirts; making the latter somewhat safer to explore by survivors without constant fear of Mother’s gaze on their back.
