Sonicsta, a Sonic youtuber, examines the potential for the sequel to be possibly the best video game movie ever made (which, admittedly, isn't saying much).
What's it competing with? Wreck It Ralph, Detective Pikachu and the movie it's a sequel to?
It's not facing terribly diverse competition in that regard.
Mortal Kombat (the original).

"All you Fascists bound to lose."Warcraft is presently the highest-grossing video game film thanks to Chinese gross.
I think we'll handily see Sonic 2 beat that.
A cruel, sick joke is still a joke, and sometimes all you can do is laugh. You could also make an argument for the first Resident Evil movie and the Prince of Persia movie.
The modern Mortal Kombat is also rather decent.
Jason has come back to kill for Mommy.Haven't seen it myself, but apparently Angry Birds 2 is a surprisingly good movie.
Also the Ratchet & Clank movie is an underrated gem, and probably the most faithful videogame movie out there, down to using the original VAs for the main cast.
Disney100 Marathon | DreamWorks MarathonI would say that most video game movies at this point haven't quite reached up to the same level as the MCU movies.
I love animation, TV, movies, YOU NAME IT!Video game movies are getting to the point where the people working on them actually grew up with the games they're adapting (i.e, we're growing past the "it's all beeps-and-bloops and pacman, right?" era), and that translates pretty much directly into higher quality. Look at Detective Pikachu and tell me 99% of the creative staff didn't play Pokemon as kids.

Also, most of the people who grew up with the games are at that age where they can write effective stories for these video game movies, as well as incorporate the game elements into the movies.
I love animation, TV, movies, YOU NAME IT!Also video games are losing its stigma. So if a video game movie is bad, today's reviewers will explain why it's bad instead of having a chip on their shoulders that implies they're too good to review a video game movie.
What stigma are video games losing?
I love animation, TV, movies, YOU NAME IT!The first mortal kombat is good because is mostly enter the dragon with big problem in little china, which is more or less the original two games.
Warcraft is mostly good in that it feel coherent and not that bad.
"My Name is Bolt, Bolt Crank and I dont care if you believe or not"Mainly that video games are for children and basement-dwellers.
I guess ever since the MCU has shown that comic book movies can be for everyone, the same is starting to hold true for video game movies.
I love animation, TV, movies, YOU NAME IT!I still say World of Warcraft had a helping hand in that regard.
I smell magic in the air. Or maybe barbecue.Shame that Warcraft wasn't all that good. Though the only criticism of it I remember is "The human actors aren't as good as the orcs."
I thought it was pretty good.
I smell magic in the air. Or maybe barbecue.I did too. I thought it was "alright" at least.
Isn't that a criticism of normal Warcraft, that the non-human faction is more interesting?
Jason has come back to kill for Mommy.I'd argue that's a criticism of any series that has any sentient non-human faction.
I see I don't care about humanity! I want to see <Insert Alien Race here> because their more interesting! all the time.
Makes me think writers have a hard time putting any effort into human races as a whole, and take for granted that people would gravitate towards them.
One Strip! One Strip! What do you think the age rating for this movie will be? PG or PG-13?
I love animation, TV, movies, YOU NAME IT!Since the first movie was rated-PG, I'm pretty sure the sequel will as well. I don't see the need for them to bump the rating up to a PG-13, especially since the first film was definitely aimed towards family audiences.
They also got some animated gifs for Sonic, Tails and Knuckles to celebrate the Lunar year!
I love animation, TV, movies, YOU NAME IT!
