The Herculean Circuit: Sign Up and Interest Thread.

The day went as usual in Northridge, California.

Targeted by Brock Jacobson and his friends. Everyone saw, but nobody stepped in. The teachers pretended they saw nothing. The students went on with their daily lives. If the principal was involved, he'd simply say that boys were going to be boys, and that such was simply the way Brock and his group "had fun" and "enjoyed their youth".

Never mind the fact that Brock Jacobson's father was a potent and dangerous investor with ties to less than reputable types to guarantee his continued monopoly. Or that his mother operated the city's largest news aggregate, the Northridge Mirror, and controlled what sort of news made it around the city.

But then, something changed when the student Leon Shepherd - associated with the much targeted Gaming Club at Pacific Grove High School - sent away for a peculiar version on a common comic page from the 50s. The so called "Herculean Circuit" seemed like a riff on the well known Charles Atlas ads. Promising to help people turn their lives around, and stand up to bullies.

Bullies like Brock Jacobson.

When the club read the books, they were exposed to a strange and increasingly arcane set of symbols and diagrams that seemed to impart upon them knowledge and abilities beyond that of any normal human being. Abilities that could definitely be deemed "Superhuman". Baseline, their speed, stamina, strength and durability increased - but the most interesting things come in the unique "Circuit" abilities they develop as a result.

And indeed, what sort of use they see fit for their powers and abilities. There are no "you are a hero" mandates, no more experienced heroes immediately in sight, no schools and nothing beyond each other to enforce a sense of morality.

But there are things outside of them and their cityscape life. Things that might well be interested in the sudden development of this club of young superhumans. Organizations and gangs and lone wolf criminals who see a use for them in advancing ancient agendas and grudges.

Like it or not, students, you have entered a new world. Either accept it and all it entails, or watch everything fall away.

This means that this is an RP where all of your characters' actions can and WILL have consequences. If your character does something, there will be a ripple effect going forward. In this way, your characters have a large influence over the course of the RP.

• Name: Armani James
• Gender: Male
• Age: 16
• Appearance: Rockstar energy◊. Stands at 5'6.
• Personality: Brash, cocky, and somewhat vain, Armani is, in a word, egotistic. His band was started out of both legitimate love for music and a desire for the spotlight; dude is not content with just a cameo. It's not that he's a bad person, just one with a massive ego who has a hard time understanding when he's wrong. If anything unambiguously good can be said about him, it's that when he cares about someone, he cares about them deeply. Maybe a bit too much.
• Backstory:
  • Armani's the second-oldest of four, and his whole life, he's wanted to stand out. That opportunity came when he met one Gabriel Murphy in third grade, and the two bonded over a shared love of music. Their friendship only grew stronger over the years, with the two making plans for a rock duo they dubbed GEMINI (they were kinda into astrology when they named it). In their sophomore year of high school, they made it an official "thing" with Armani as lead singer and guitarist and Gabriel on the bass; while it wasn't the best thing in the world, there was an undeniable passion behind it.
  • Then came Carla Anderson. She and her family moved in next to Armani's one summer, and much like he had with Gabriel, he instantly clicked with her over their shared love of music. When he found out she could play drums, he eagerly offered her a spot in the band; she, of course, accepted.
  • And that was when things started going downhill. Gabriel, already jealous of Armani and Carla's friendship, became downright mean to her after she was added to the band, and she quickly came to share the sentiment. Armani thought Gabriel was being a bitch, which strained their friendship, which set off a major argument, which didn't ruin said friendship per se, but cooled it considerably. Now, they clash over every little thing, not helped by Armani's glory hog tendencies.
  • Armani actually signed up for the gaming club because he assumed he'd need something to do when GEMINI fell through. Fortunately, it hasn't...yet.
• Circuit: Sound Wave Generation. By making loud sounds—whether that be singing, screaming, or playing guitar—Armani can create and project sound waves. Fortunately for everyone, this projection is a conscious choice, and can't be done accidentally.

• Name: Lila van Wieren
• Gender: Female
• Age: 16
• Appearance: [1]◊ [2]◊ A teenage girl with pale skin and deep reddish hair, with hazel eyes that seem to glint with a golden light in the dark. Possesses sharp, bestial teeth, with an elaborate series of proboscides and chelicerae that she usually keeps folded up inside her cheeks. Visibly powerful musculature and developed form, thanks to the increased physicality that the empowering event has granted her. Stands at about 5'9".
• Personality: Lila is a cold, distant sort who seems reluctant to stick around in any one given place, coming across as irritable and paranoid as if constantly afraid she'll be jumped by some unseen force. She is short and clipped in speech, often speaking bluntly and sardonically with others and seeming to find the very concept of sentimentality repulsive. Her attitude towards feeding is surprisingly flippant, and she plans ahead accordingly to whatever she can get away with—she's taken to hoarding foodstuffs with blood already inside and picking out live targets only when absolutely necessary instead of going on a bloodsucking spree; in which case she prefers to isolate a single victim using false charm and manipulate them into a passionate kiss that she can then use to feed on them discreetly. She is in fact terrified of the intense hunger for blood her new powers have gestated in her, and she can only lash out in self-defense against perceived dangers—though those who manage to earn her trust will be able to realise that this intense fear is only that, and she can be quite amiable once someone gets to know her properly.
• Backstory: Lila was orphaned from a very young age, and was promptly picked up by a children's home in order to be raised there instead. Growing up, Lila was distrustful and disobedient towards the staff, though confided in a few of the other girls in the home as well as some of the nicer workers who she crossed paths with on occasion. After attending the nearby school over a decade, she's become somewhat anxious and irritable due to never having been adopted by any family, and is severely worried about her future prospects without some kind of guidance to assist her. Having branched out her activities into a mix of rebelliousness and complete disloyalty to any particular cliques, she's become known for simply doing what she likes at the expense of even the bullies one would assume she'd join forces with. Instead she's intent on forging her own path, and feels alienated by the comparatively sheltered lives most of her schoolmates possess. She has most recently joined the gaming club just as an excuse to goof off at the expense of her rivals, purely to spite the bullies targeting them by taking on the role of a sort-of "nerd bodyguard" as she describes it.
• Circuit: Vampirism. What will surely turn out to be a broad set of abilities is currently limited to only bloodsucking, but the more that Lila feeds on live prey the more she can feel her body changing as a result. Lila has mutated horrific mouthparts within her cheeks that can be moved about with as much dexterity as her fingers, enabling her to effectively rip apart internal flesh with only a passionate-seeming kiss and stifle the cries of her victims by slicing up their tongues. Along with these mouthparts come prehensile proboscides, which can unravel to a length of up to five metres at maximum—fleshy, sucker-tipped tubes that Lila can use to suck blood from her targets or fight them at long range. This power seems to be gestating and broadening the more Lila feeds, but it's uncertain where exactly they'll end up at this moment in time.
• Etc:
  • Sensitive to UV radiation, as such she is averse to intense sunlight and is often seen hiding from solar rays using her hoodie (or an umbrella in truly desperate scenarios). She does not burn outright, but it causes her searing pain and discomfort, and she succumbs to agonizing sunburn in only a minute or two if she doesn't protect herself.
  • Consuming regular foods that contain blood can in fact mitigate her hunger temporarily, but she will eventually have to prey on a live target. She has stocked her refrigerator with as much blood-related culinary as possible, but she can only put off the inevitable for so long.
  • Her only connections are with other kids from the orphanage she was raised in, and most of them are already moving on with their lives. That said, she is still on good terms with some of the staff, but as their positions change around so does her chances of seeing them again. As such, she doesn't have many loved ones to speak of.

• Name: Uria Fitzgerald
• Gender: Female
• Age: 16
• Appearance: Small and waifish, Uria stands 4'10" tall. (Ignore the wings).
• Personality: A curious girl, Uria comes across as an easily-distracted daydreamer. In actuality, she's much more perceptive than people give her credit for. She doesn't have a good grasp of social behaviors, however, and this can make her appear rude - for instance, she doesn't look people in the eyes when they speak to her, sits next to people without asking, etc. Despite this, Uria is very soft and kind towards others, under the mentality of 'live and let live'.
• Backstory: Raised as the only child in a very religious household, Uria had memorized most of the Bible before she was ten, and didn't care for it, for the most part. She was fascinated by the descriptions of angels, however: great flaming wheels with many eyes and three faces, elder beings beyond mortal comprehension. She desired to learn more, and began reading the works of HP Lovecraft. Vivid descriptions of the bizarre and unknowable filled her dreams, making her grow ever more distant from reality. Uria got into gaming through a Christian Minecraft server made by her Sunday school group. She initially joined the gaming club because her parents wouldn’t buy her Alone in the Dark, and quickly found she enjoyed the company of gamers who weren’t afraid to say swear words.
• Circuit: The Unspeakable. Uria can transform her body, partially or fully, into a many-tentacled, many-eyed, many-toothed monstrosity. Her already superhuman physical abilities increase even further in this form, as her body takes on a gelatinous quality to absorb impacts. Her tendrils can extend several meters, and are coated in tiny pseudopods which strengthen her grip and allow her to adhere to walls and ceilings in defiance of gravity. Her many eyes grant her 360 degree vision, as well as the ability to see heat signatures and UV light. Her many teeth are sharp, and she can sprout them from her tentacles to turn them into essentially tentacle-chainsaws.
• Etc:
  • Uria's monstrous form is known to cause unease in those who look at it. The exact level varies dependent on willpower and the person's attitude towards Uria. Uria's friends are unaffected, but enemies of faint heart might find themselves running and screaming.
  • Being both a poet and a dork, Uria came up with transformation chants. These aren't necessary for her power, she just thinks they sound cool.
  • To turn from human to monster:
    Thousand eyes to see the heart
    Thousand hands to tear apart
    Thousand mouths to swallow light
    And speak these words: The Stars Are Right
  • To return from monster to human:
    Thousand eyes now close in sleep
    No more shall the prophets weep

• Name: Katarina Cato
• Gender: Female
• Age:16
• Appearance: Human self,◊ cat self.◊
• Personality: On the surface, Katarina is a classic shut-in, aloof and stand-offish to a fault. She's more at home in a bookstore or with a game console than anything else, and doesn't tend to make friends or explore her surroundings. On her worse days, she can can come off as cold or distant at best and a snarky prick at worst, but the truth is more complicated. Underneath her prickly veener, she's a social misfit afraid of getting too close or saying the wrong thing, or that no-one would want someone like her for a friend. She wants to be more outgoing and confident, to be someone who does what she wants regardless of what people think, but she keeps falling back into the same habits. But under the influence of her Circuit, that's starting to change...
• Backstory: An only child and low-key introvert, Katarina never had many friends. She wanted friends, but all her attempts were met with mockery or scorn. Her idea of what was 'cool' was never the same as her fellow students, and she second-guessed herself to a fault. She only became more aloof and distant as time passed. Whenever she did talk to people, she often responded with snark or complaints, displaying false confidence and amusing herself at others expense. Maybe it didn't win people over, but it was better than letting the jocks or preppies walk over her.
  • Even so, she did want friends. When she saw the posters for a gaming club plastered around the school, she reluctantly signed up, even if she wasn't sure it would go anywhere. She did like games, even if she didn't like playing them with other people, but maybe it would go somewhere.
• Circut: Cat's Meow Katarina is able to transform fully or partially into a cat. Her most powerful form is a midway hybrid state, gaining greater speed and agility along with enhanced senses, night-vision, and incredibly sharp claws. She also gains greater instincts, becoming more aware of her surroundings. Her abilities will only grow stronger as they develop, but they come with some drawbacks...
• Etc: Katarina's Circuit has as many drawbacks as it does benefits. She becomes more confident and bold, less of an awkward introvert and more of a playful show-off. Doubting herself less and less and as she becomes the person she's always wanted to be. But she's also gained more catlike traits. Laziness, curiosity, love of fish or poultry and even a fondness for mice among other things. Her instincts are as much a blessing as they are a curse, giving her passions and impulses that only become harder to control with time. Her appearance becomes more catlike, even when she's not fully transformed. And the more she transforms, the closer her normal form becomes to her catgirl one, moving her closer towards a modelock with each change. But part of her enjoys the confidence and abilities she gains, so she's not sure she can bring herself to stop. No matter how much she wants to.

Gender: female

Age: 18

Appearance: At 5'7"/1.7 m she is a lot stronger than she looks. This is due to having done heavy labor her entire life. Why? She handled the carrying of stuff for her scientist family. She has long hair down to her ankles that is naturally black but is often green due to her Circuit (most people think she dyed her hair). Her eyes are normally brown but alas dyed to green via Circuit like her hair. Fortunely, this does not affect her vision. She wears simple but practical clothing. Honestly, her clothing is just... boring to look at.

Personality: She rushes though everything yet is somehow through about details at the same time. This is due to her upbringing. A walking paradox is the best way to describe her. Seriously, it's hard to tell if she has the mentality of a scientist or a farmer or both...

Backstory: She was born into a family of farmers and scientists. Yes, this is not a normal combo. End result is that she has the brains of the scientist and the strength of the farmers, but favors the scientist part. Yes, there was a barn for the scientists. As well as having the knowledge scientists have.

Circuit: Molecular manipulation She can change things on a molecular level, including herself. Right now she is limited to herself and inorganic objects. As she gets better, she will be able to change things more as well as adding more to things being changed/more things can be done.

Currently she can do this to herself to travel VERY fast while being in the form of molecules. Oh and the winds she leaves behind can be weaponized.

Etc: She knows how to use guns due to being a farmer as well as skills from farmers and scientists have mixed to get her odd skill set.

• Personality:A person of few words with her few words being anything but stoic with her helping around actions more often than words, she will try her best to interact with others but will freeze up, or some times evading others in fear of losing a chance of interacting with someone and having a trouble to understand emotions of others.

• Backstory:

• An only child, Junia is an bright person only for the problem of her mute to happen, with no matter how hard her parents worked to help her speak, it didn't work and the time getting close, they send her to school and hoped for the best, which make her into the weird kid of her classes, always drawing on her paper and taking in notes with almost no sound from her, not even a peep, which scared her parents and send her to therapy for the hope she will soon speak, but when in the age of 10 she speaks one day in her home, speaking the word "Hello" having her mom and dad cry tears of joy hearing there daughter speak and later in her life she speaks in full sentences, but this is still rare.

• When Junia heard about the gaming club, she seen this as a win win, with her knowing that her parents will be happy hearing there daughter joined a club and learn to interacting to other, as well as able to play games in her free time, and so she joined the club.

• Circuit: Reduce. She is able to shrink herself from her "5,4" to 3 inches, with the smaller she gets the stronger and faster she gets with the cost of her physical endurance getting weaker, making her into a glass cannon.

• Etc:If she wishes to not talk but still wants to interact with her fellow classmates, she will act it out or use a note pad to put it what she wants to say to them.

Appearance: averaged sized teenager, has black hair and wears yellow and pink sunglasses always, wears big boots and a red long-sleeved shirt and blue pants his eye color is black even the scleras

Personality: an energetic friendly loudmouth who tries to make friends although he can come off as annoying he generally has the best intentions in mind, he loves drinking cola sodas, loves being the center of attention

Backstory: He was raised in a high-class family anything he could want he would get it in a short duration and has money to spare, while his life might seem perfect he constantly has to live up to his brothers accomplishes this combined with barely any parental attention made him an attention seeker from other sources

Circuit: BIG SHOT man

• his circuit makes him able to shoot big shot cola from his fingertips with different pressure from a small spray to a high pressurized cola blade, he can also move it somewhat once its been shoot, he can control certain properties of the soda right now he can make it so sugary and carbonated that it causes chemical burns and can remove rust easily

• Gender: Female
• Age: 16
• Appearance: Like this, more or less.◊ A stern-faced girl with long (formerly black) hair that falls all the way to her ankles. As of late, her entire body, hair included, is made up of viscous green slime.
• Personality: Most people would say that Sam is an overly serious person. Not that she's a stick in the mud or that she doesn't like to have fun, but she treats everything, including fun, with way too much seriousness. As a member of the gaming club, she treats every game as if the fate of the world depends on it, although she's not a sore loser as much as she is melodramatic about it. She's also not quite as smart as she seems and will occasionally make some downright stupid decisions even after extended deliberation.
• Backstory: As the only daughter of an upper middle-class family, Sam has always had money to throw around. And from a young age, that money has gone to one place. Games. Card games, board games, video games, any kind of game she could find an opponent for. Obviously, this obsession with games has given her a reputation as a huge dork, but it's also led to her forming a dedicated friend group. Said obsession also led her to become a founding member of Pacific Grove High's Gaming club.
• Circuit: Acid Body. Sam's entire body is composed of a viscous green slime. As such, she is liquid, able to change her shape to suit her needs, but more importantly, this substance is acidic. In her default state, anything engulfed by her body will be dissolved over the course of several hours and her touch causes a mild stinging sensation (and a need to wash your hands before said stinging intensifies), but she can increase this corrosive effect at will, until her touch can melt through almost any substance within minutes and anything engulfed by her dissolves in seconds.
• Etc: Grew up watching the original Yu-Gi-Oh! series, which may have inspired her long hair and "Games are Serious Business" attitude.

Sci, your character is much too powerful. I consulted with Kage about a character he used before - and yeah that level of power is too significant. Also, Lamarck was not right, Sci - you can't be smart and strong simply from having it be in the family.

And Jher, your character is simply too silly and meme-y. It just doesn't fit.

• Name: Phillip "Willow" (Previously: "Sam", "Pill", "Calliope", "Rhine" and "Hecarim") Miles
• Gender: Fluid
• Age: 17
• Appearance: At the time we first see them, Willow is suffering from a puberty that wants to ruin all the work they put into their looks. Their current aesthetic is an attempt at a feminine-leaning gothic aesthetic, at least within the constraints of budget. Of course, their initial appearance likely won't be relevant for long...
• Personality: Willow is in a constant transitive state with their own self-identity, adopting and discarding aesthetics, hobbies and identifiers in a search of ones that fit right in the moment. That isn't to say that there's no consistent pieces, some traits have always felt right to them: Gaming has always been a fun past-time, figures of authority have never proved worthy of respect and the fluid nature of undefined gender has been more true than ever settling firmly into any kind of binary. Outside of the cycling of snappy characterizing traits, they've always held a supreme confidence that often leads into simply passing off any kind of bullying with either a joke or caustically biting remarks.
• Backstory: The youngest child of three, there was a lot of pressure on Willow to follow the paragon example of their older brother and sister. Naturally, that hasn't really happened; with good but not great grades, no intent to treat approaching adult life seriously and of course this whole thing with gender identity and personality traits going on (Willow steadfastly rebukes any calls of it being 'a phase'), there's a fair bit for their parents to be passively-aggressive in their displeasure in the turn.
• Circuit: Who Do I Want To Be Today? To put it simply, Willow has gained the classic powers of shapeshifting from the training provided by the Herculean Circuit. While it's going to take a lot of practice, creativity and possibly straight up biological research to actually do anything majorly unusual with it, for now Willow is happy that they are no longer bound to the face and body they were born with and now have room to experiment.
• Etc:
  • Willow has a complicated like of musical theater. On the one hand the sheer constraints of the medium make it something that can only carry messages deemed acceptable by the kind of people who can afford to spend money and take a night out to watch a show. On the other hand, so many of the recent fare have really good soundtracks.
  • Willow's been wanting to try cosplay as one of the cycling hobbies, but their budget (and body) has never really lined up to be able to try it out.
  • Willow does still answer to their previous names when it's clear who those names are being directed at, though bringing up their birth name draws out some of their vitriol.

Appearance: wears a massive black jacket and under that jacket, he wears a full piece suit the one you see at weddings why does he use this kind of suit all the time? is because he can and no one will stop him, he also has black hair

Personality: an easy-going and lazy guy barely takes anything seriusly due the fact he is filthy rich why would he bother with something if he can just trow money at it, his ego is trougth the roof making him come off as an annoying asshole but he does keep friends in a very high regard that being to his level

Backstory:Born in a rich family and also being an only child George had everything he could ask for and at the highest quality posible he just had to ask for it this made him into a spoiled brat which eventualy growed into a spoiled teen soon to be adult, a life without struggle made him lax and uninterested in anything but his own pleasures such as gaming

Circuit: Living Desert: George can turn his body into sand which he can freely manipulate, extend and create(altougth rigth now its pretty hard to create much) at will at the cost of dehydratation using his circuit for extended periods of time severly dehydratates him, he can also dry anything he touches with his hands altougth this doesnt replenish his own water, being fully soaked makes his sand clump and unable to dodge attacks by turning into sand, he can only dry stuff when he is whole

Wow, time really got away from me... it's been nearly three weeks since I started working on this (granted, I was visiting family for about a week of it, but still). Anyway, I understand that the RP has been going on for a while, and so it's very likely I won't be able to join, but I thought I'd put this here anyway.

Name: Colchester Laurens (If referred to by a shortened version of their name, they will correct the other person every time until they stop, but don't outwardly display annoyance. The same goes for anyone who refers to them by the wrong pronouns, gets their name flat-out wrong, or otherwise refers to them incorrectly.)

Gender: Non-binary

Age: 15

Appearance: Light skin, brown shoulder-length hair, brown eyes, and big round glasses. About 5'10''. Usually dressed in an eclectic mix of formal and informal clothing (T-shirt with a tie? Yes. Sweatpants with a button-up shirt? Yes. Hoodie with a stovepipe hat? Yes.)

Personality: Colchester is absent-minded and rarely quite on the same wavelength as anyone else; they make connections between things that no one else does, which gives them a good sense of humor but also makes them seem kind of paranoid and all-around weird. They tend to overapply themself to anything that interests them and ignore everything else; this means that they know a lot of seemingly random things (often the result of research for personal projects), but also lack a lot of more common (and more useful) knowledge. Colchester tries very hard not to lie or mislead people and doesn't make exceptions for things like "tact;" they also feel very uncomfortable with secrecy.

Backstory: Colchester's parents, Patrick and Frederica Laurens, are both professors at a local university — Frederica teaches Latin and Sanskrit in the classics department, and Patrick teaches American history in (of course) the history department. Colchester had a fairly happy childhood, and they probably picked up many of their quirks from their eccentric parents. Colchester was never exactly the most popular kid, but they managed to find a few friends who found their mannerisms and interests endearing or fun rather than weird as hell, and, being naturally introverted, a few friends was all they needed. Naturally, such friends were mostly massive nerds, and it was these friends who introduced Colchester to gaming. But because of weird school-district shenanigans, none of them ended up going to the same high school as them — this, combined with vague looming apprehension about their future, led them to join the Gaming Club and get more involved in gaming, as it provided both an escape from their worries and a way to make new friends.

Of course, high school was also their introduction to Brock Jacobson. And having been at this school for about a year now, they have seen more of him than they'd care to. They refuse to refer to him as a "bully," seeing as part of what makes bullying "bullying" is that the bully has power over the victim, and Colchester will not admit that Brock has any such power. He's just a bastard, no need for any specialized terminology.

Circuit: Etherealness. Colchester can vanish and reappear somewhere else. In actuality, when they vanish, they enter a state where they can see dimly in all directions and move as fast as they like simply by thinking, passing through all surfaces if they choose. They can't currently pass through the floor or levitate; this is probably due to psychological limitations, since they do move by thinking in this state. While vanished, they can hear all sounds around them as if muffled by water, but by focusing on the sound of human speech, they can make the words perfectly clear and understandable. They can take objects with them when they vanish but cannot manipulate objects in the real world while vanished. They can only remain in this state for up to a few minutes at a time, and while vanished they cannot travel more than exactly 108 feet from where they initially vanished — beyond that point, there appears to be nothing but an endless void, and they cannot step over the edge.

Etc: Their parents initially wanted to name them Camulodunum, but just barely settled for the town's modern name instead. Also, when they use their Circuit, their glasses always disappear slightly after and reappear slightly before the rest of them.

If I do get in, one possible explanation for why they've done nothing up to this point is that their powers activated immediately and they just now figured out how to get back (or their powers just timed out). I don't know, just a thought.
