It’s the turn of the 3rd millennium, and human exploration of space goes strong. Colony ships are sent out into the great beyond, powered by incredible feats of engineering - space-warping drives, powered by massive banks of cold-fusion reactors, send the ships far past the light-speed barrier into the far reaches of space. A few of such ships, hurtling through the great unknown towards known colony planets, are knocked off course, the people on board in suspended animation and unable to do a thing as their ships are sent into the blackness of space at a hundred times the speed of light. They are written off as lost in the depths of space - just another statistic.

It’s the turn of the 28th millenium, and the planet that would soon be known as Eden is in the midst of a great war. Across its single massive continent, through jungles and deserts, mountains and plains, the myriad species that live there are embroiled in brutal war for control of the planet. And in the midst of that, on the great western plains, a star falls from the skies, streaking down to the ground and annihilating all around it. A temporary peace is called as the factions begrudgingly band together to investigate this new arrival - a massive wreck, an advanced starship. And from it, creatures emerge, clad in space suits and carrying surveying equipment.

Humans.

The other colony ships are soon to follow, crashing around the western side of the continent, formerly a neutral unclaimed territory but now home to the new human colonies. The planet stabilizes as humans are introduced, learning to communicate and interact with these new species, brokering peace between the many factions and peddling their advanced technologies to the others. But all good things must come to an end - two thousand years later, when the arrival of humans is all but resigned to history, a massive explosion goes off under the Icon of Unity, the massive statue in the center of the continent commemorating global peace, killing the diplomats gathered there for a summit. Quickly, fingers are cast, and before long, the continent devolves into another massive war, a free for all with alliances being volatile at best.

In this war, the use of new war machines emerged - powered by reverse-engineered versions of the cold fusion reactors from the original colony ships, bipedal engines of war were created, combining the strengths of infantry and armored vehicle in one, and quickly becoming the standard way to wage war. Each faction has its own name for these machines, but a standard term has emerged - the Warmech.

Among the chaos, small bands of mercenary soldiers and pilots have formed, selling their services to those who are willing to meet their prices. Their reasons to fight are as varied as the machines they pilot - and amongst them, there is... you. The Angels of Eden, an upstart mercenary company, trying to make its name in the world, and about to be embroiled in much more than just the war...

Eden is calling, Aces - how will you answer?

As the title indicates, players for this RP have already been gathered - though it may open to outside submissions sometime in the future, for now, this is simply a way to conveniently gather all character submissions from my players in one place.

Character

  • Name: Adeile
  • Age: ???
  • Species: N/A
  • Appearance: Magitech clockwork android girl, ready to serve.
  • Backstory: Adeile isn't sure where she came from or how she was made. All she knows is that she was made eons ago, created by a mighty civilization from ages past. She was unearthed by a particularly nasty sect of the Ecclesiarchy of Holy Gaia. Despite their public adherence to the rules of the Ecclesiarchy, their leader was a hypocrite to the extreme, willing to do anything to further their goals. Sensing her vast potential, they kept her secret from the other sects and attempted to reprogram her into a devout acolyte, in service of their sect and no other. But her systems were well-protected, even if her programming had been corrupted. They would have kept trying or turned her to scrap, but their stronghold was soon under siege from the Union.
    • Acting out of self-preservation, she escaped during the confusion, fleeing with a group of Aces that had been part of the assault. In the heat of battle, she discovered her connection with Warmechs and other machines, able to integrate herself and control them directly. With a natural gift for Warmechs and nowhere to go, she eventually became an Ace herself. Her goal is to travel the lands with the Aces to discover her origins and original purpose, but wishes to learn as much as she possibly can. Logically, fighting with and against multiple factions was one of the fastest ways to gain that knowledge, even if she had to bloody her hands a little.
  • Personality: In many ways, Adeile is a blank slate, but she's far from an emotionless drone. She's capable of thought and reason, and can even feel. She's incredibly curious and driven, eager to learn all she can about the world she's found herself in. She's perfectly pleasant, but appears to have no aggressive or impulsive tendencies to speak off, acting with cold hard logic. But beneath that hard exterior is a sensitive soul, filled with uncertainty and doubt about her place in the world.
  • Strengths: As an android, Ada is strong and durable, and resistant to gunfire. She does not feel pain or discomfort, which is helpful when a limb or socket gets dismembered. She has stores of databanks filled with general knowledge, though her information on the modern world is scarce. But her true strength is her ability to integrate herself with Warmechs and other machines. As long as she's in physical proximity, she can interface with their systems and control them directly. She's incredibly intelligent and sharp, and can usually stay focused in the heat of battle.
  • Weaknesses: If she has a weakness, it's her overt lack of emotion and general inexperience. She's incredibly naive, unable to tell whether someone is being insincere and takes everything at face value. Her subdued emotions make it harder for her to connect with others, and she has trouble understanding the more nuanced aspects of sapient beings. Additionally, she can only absorb so much information at a time, and may be forced to dissconect herself if whatever she's integrated with is too strong for her.

Warmech

-Pulsar rifle, discharges focused blasts of energy at long range. Somewhat fast speed, but average power.

-Shield for personal defense. Is sturdy enough for close combat in a pinch.

-Z.E.R.O Units floating funnels controlled by thought. Capable of moving at incredible speeds and firing narrow lasers at an incredibly fast rate. Can move in the blink of an eye and barrage an opponent if used correctly, but damage output if somewhat low.

-Jet thrusters on the back of her heels and lower torso. Allows her to dodge attacks and traverse long distances swiftly. Used correctly, they can even allow her to fly, though her capabilities aren't infinite.

Character

  • Name: Adrian Vermillion
  • Age: 28
  • Species: Human
  • Appearance: Link
  • Backstory: Adrian is a self titled engineering genius with the technical skills and know how to back up the weight that the title puts on him. While working for the research arm of one of the many companies under the PCU he has pulled off minor miracles in the field of mech-science, including lessening system drain and improving standard usage time by a massive 5%.

However his true fascination lied in the study of Daemon artifacts, finding that they brushed the closest to truly integrated science along with magic and fielding a hypothesis that it would be possible to reverse engineer the technology and apply it to give human pilots an even playing field with the more esoteric abilities that the other races held.

To further his research he took a number of grants from corporations in order to further his research, spending almost a year with the sole purpose of being able to figure out how to reproduce or at least make use of it. And near the end of his deadline he finally cracked it, producing his own version of a daemon artifact he dubbed 'Lord Vermillion'. However when he went to display the system it suffered a misfire that had him discredited by almost everyone and sent on the run by the corporations who feel he wasted their money. It was only later that he discovered his program had been sabotaged by corporate raiders. He joined the Aces in order to prove the merits of his discovery.

  • Personality: Adrian is brilliant and knows it which leads to some thinking that he possesses a massive ego and a sense of self entitlement. However despite some issues he is also one of the most open of people, accepting pretty much anyone regardless of race or ideology due to his belief that science advances through many routes.

  • Strengths: While he enjoys tinkering more then anything his engineering degrees aren't for show, he can fix most mechs regardless of what race they fall under so long as he understands the systems. He is also an avid researcher of daemon artifacts and thus is one of the foremost human minds on the subject.
  • Weaknesses: Physical he is unimpressive despite not being out of shape, and in terms of piloting he is only so/so, more useful on the battlefield due to the 'Lord Vermillion' system and his mechs long range fighting capabilities.

Warmech

  • Name: BX 0013 Anti-Armor Weapon Platform 'Arachnid'
  • Appearance: Link Much larger then in the picture, but gives a pretty good idea of what it looks like.
  • Equipment

-Multiple Missile systems meant for long ranged destruction.

-Side mounted chain guns packed with armor piercing ammunition for close-mid ranged combat

-Leg mounted 'blades' for close combat encounters.

-Retractable manipulators designed for precise movement and control rather then grip strength.

-Retractable Main Gun, a long barrel Railgun that extends from the mid-body of the Arachnid, single shot with ten minute cooldown required.

-Lord Vermillion System: A system of Adrian's own design based off a daemon relic dubbed the 'Eye of Terror'. Once the system is activated a number of small 'drones' about the size of a human head will pour out of the Arachnid, activating cloaking tech while scanning the battlefield. While active the Lord Vermillion gives its user absolute awareness of the battlefield down to the composition of buildings, the ground, and even the weather in real time. This information is all directed to the users mind, and thus use over a long period of time can have adverse mental effects.

Character

Name: Elysium "Elly" Conway

Age: 26

Species: Human

Appearance: Elysium has a cheerful countenance, auburn hair, grey eyes, and tan skin. She is fairly short at 5'4''.

Backstory:

  • Elysium Conway was born and raised in Saint Pellinore's Hold, an Ecclesiastic church-fortress. Both her parents were very prominent members of the community; her mother was Seneschal Hestia Conway, the official responsible for ensuring the smooth working of the Hold's engineering and research programs, while her father was Justice Conway, a Deacon-Lord and the primary enforcer of papal law within the Hold.

  • Elysium herself proved to be something of an engineering prodigy, much to her parents' delight. She finished schooling several years early and proceeded to soar through the ranks of the Hold's Engineering Corp. At 19, Elysium became the youngest member ever to join the Division for the Development of Interstellar Travel, the Hold's most prestigious project.

  • Elysium's first years with DDIT were marred by controversy. Her approach to research and development was radical and unorthodox compared to her fellows; she advocated for the incorporation of "alien" technologies into Old World designs, and frequently sought out engineering literature illicitly obtained from the Aerialite Coaltion. Although she believed strongly in the Ecclesiarchy's holy mission, Elysium lacked the isolationist streak that was pervasive amongst her community. She eventually learned to keep quiet about this perspective, but not before she had alienated much of the engineering corp and escaped punishment by the skin of her teeth.

  • Years went by, and Elysium was eventually granted a place as a consulting engineer on an Ecclesiastic expedition to an ancient crash site. This trip was the most exposure to the outside world that she had ever had, and it only served to disillusion her further to the beliefs she had been raised with. After all, she thought, how could Eden be so much worse than Earth when it seemed to possess so much natural beauty? The final blow to her tenuous faith was dealt with the onset of war. As the Ecclesiarchy turned its gaze momentarily from the stars in service of a bloody Crusade, the DDIT was redirected to the production of Warmechs. Elysium could no longer countenance her community's vicious hatred for the other races of Eden - a hatred which apparently surpassed their desire to return to Earth. After a month of careful planning, Elysium crept into the repurposed mech hangar one night, taking control of the mech she had been forced to create and using it to flee the Hold, and the Ecclesiarchy, for good.

  • Elysium joined up with the Angels of Eden mainly for lack of a better option. As much as she now despised the Ecclesiarchy, she remained distrustful of the PCU and did not know nearly enough about the other nations of Eden to make an informed judgement. Unfortunately, an enormous warmech was not conducive to a low-key nomadic lifestyle, and Elysium felt too proprietary over the thing to abandon it for anybody to find, so joining up with a mercenary company was the only viable choice. Now she's just going with the flow, hoping to carve out time for her research projects in between all the fighting.

Personality: Elysium's former coworkers would describe her as prickly, quiet, and focused, but that's a stark contrast to the Elysium of the present. After spending so much time walking on eggshells around people who she didn't like very much to begin with, she takes full advantage of her newfound freedom to say and do what she wants. Though she still has few words for those she finds unpleasant, with most people Elysium is snarky, mischievous, and nonchalant. The one thing that hasn't changed is her single-mindedness: when she gets sucked into a project, especially a project involving mechanics, she can and will work through any distraction.

Strengths: Elysium is an extremely skilled engineer and inventor, and generally quite adaptable/quick on the uptake. Since she was the primary engineer of her mech she possesses an intimate knowledge of its workings which can aid her in combat. She also possesses both good upper body strength and excellent fine motor control due to the mechanic work she grew up doing alongside the more technical elements of engineering.

Weaknesses: Due to her upbringing, Elysium has major gaps in her knowledge of Eden's history, populations, and politics, which can hamper her even as she tries to fill them in. Unlike many mech pilots, Elysium also has little if any formal combat training, meaning that she can be quite vulnerable when outside her mech. Like most humans, she is magically inert, and has little to no knowledge of nor interest in the ways of magic.

Warmech

Name: Apostate

Appearance: Extremely dense and standing at over four stories tall, Apostate has the medieval look of an Ecclesiarchy mech, with a few major alterations. For one thing, the Ecclesiastic heraldry originally present on the mech has been carefully removed, exposing the bare metal beneath the paint. Also, Elysium has made several additions and alterations to the mech, all of which eschew the medieval aesthetic of the chassis in favor of a sleeker, more practical design.

Equipment:

  • Crater Makers: Taking inspiration from Birdfolk Warmech, Elysium has retrofitted Apostate with a set of thrusters powerful enough to launch the mech significant distances. Though not true flight (Apostate's construction is not aerodynamic enough to support such a feature), these thrusters help Apostate clear distances which would usually be time-consuming for a relatively slow mech. Additionally, Apostate is dense enough that the landing after a jump can shake the ground, damage terrain, and even stagger lighter enemy mechs (hence the name).
  • Standard Artillery: Two front-mounted artillery cannons serve as Apostate's primary weapon. These cannons have a rapid rate of fire, counterbalanced by less powerful projectiles. Their most unique feature is their versatility; they have been designed to switch seamlessly between ammunition types/calibers, making them viable for continued use even when resources are limited. This feature was phased out of later Ecclesiarchy mech designs as the Ecclesiarchy developed more robust supply lines.
  • Conspirator Missiles: Housed in embedded casings originally designed to launch miniature nuclear warheads, Conspirator Missiles are a highly experimental technology invented by Elysium herself. Elysium has incorporated Batfolk cloaking technology into both launcher and ammunition to create missiles which, while slow-moving, are designed to be nearly undetectable to the naked eye, as well as heat-seeking. In short, Conspirator Missiles take the expression "they won't even know what hit them" literally.

Character

Name: Mayenne Futaie-Mars Crataegus Rosaceae, though most commonly known by her pilot handle Hawthorn
Age: 43
Species: Elf
Appearance: Hawthorn prides herself on being neat, proper and the perfect picture of a businesswoman. She bears the kind of tall, sharp stature of an elf that is further emphasized with a business suit in the traditional human design. She has added a number of natural accents to this ensemble such as flowers woven into her (surprisingly long) braided ponytail.
Backstory: Officially, Malus Domestica is a biotech firm specializing (though not exclusively) in agriculture. While not much information is available on the early days of the corporation beyond the public-facing story of their founder Johnathan Malus, what is clear is that they have managed to obtain a number of lucrative land management contracts and patents that are currently yet to be turned into viable products.

Officially, they do not take an active stance in the current conflict between factions due to a requirement to continue business. After all, everyone needs agriculture (or any number of other natural resource management strategies) to provide food for their citizens and actively sponsoring one faction over another could cause some to see the proper custodianship of natural resources as yet another weapon of this terrible war.

Officially, the Warmech pilot known as Hawthorn is a middle-ranking Sales Representative for Domestica. Having fled the Technocracy at an early age, she quickly adapted to the odd blend of nature reverence and technology-driven self-improvement that comprises the corporate culture of Malus Domestica. Officially, Hawthorn has gone rogue and been publicly disavowed by Domestica after, according to the official story, she stole an industrial work-mech and kitbashed a number of experimental projects together into a viable Warmech. She has joined the Angels of Eden as an Ace in order to fight for a future that is best for everyone.
Personality: To anyone she has not had time to become close friends with, Hawthorn is someone who carries the kind of always-positive outlook and sterile friendliness that is common to those in corporations who need to make deals. Quick to offer a token boon that ultimately carries no weight or to suggest specific products to solve an issue, she still at least personally tries to represent her corporation even though she has been disavowed by them.

Those that get to know her better see that the facade she puts up isn't entirely a facade. It does very much seem like being a sales rep is the majority of her personality but the underlying structure of that personality comes to light: she is obsessed with her own self-image, always trying to find the angle that will make her (and by extension Malus Domestica) look good in the eyes of the public and to make sure any kind of support thrown in behind a cause doesn't harm her own best interests. In her downtime, especially around those that know her enough to not fall for the charismatic salesperson routine she proves herself to be quite odd as she uses her low-energy moments to dance to whatever music she can run over earbuds or repeat esoteric mantras to herself as part of the company's attempt to foster magic development.
Strengths: Hawthorn has an extremely resilient mental fortitude, she's unlikely to lose her temper or lose hope in heated moments. She's also taken rather well to mech piloting; she's by no means as good as someone with training and battlefield experience but she knows her way around a mech (especially her own mech). She's currently trying to develop magic potential in herself through a test run of Malus Domestica's Mana Development Regime but the combination of personalized meditations and rigorous physical exercise has yet to bear fruit.
Weaknesses: In addition to the aforementioned lack of current magic potential, Hawthorn is also just very much not built for person-to-person combat. Additionally, beyond explanations skimmed from the corporation's internal documentation and advert sheets, she doesn't particularly know much about science or engineering.

Warmech

Name: Yig (a modified Malus Domestica Heavy Industrial Workmech)
Appearance: Originally built for non-military pursuits, Yig is a bit shorter than a conventional Warmech. The Malus Domestica HIW is a common sight on agricultural land, often seen dragging soil improvement tools during initial land preparation. The plant matter cultivated on the HIW appears to be mostly aesthetic however in a combat situation it may constitute basic camouflage.
Equipment:

  • A laser convergence weapon made of large curved lenses that appears to be a miniaturized implementation of theoretical techniques that would have been used in an orbital solar lensing array.
  • A heavy industrial pollen applicator cannon. The cannon is loaded with an experimental metal-eating bacteria intended for recycling purposes. While the bacteria doesn't work fast enough to cause destruction on the timescale of a battle, it can work to weaken armor plating in preparation for more conventional (or unconventional) armaments.
  • Rudimentary hand-layout manipulators attached to robust arms.

It's clearly a case of backroom political albumizing.

Character

  • Name: Riley

  • Age: 24

  • Species: Half human and Batfolk

  • Appearance: Riley has long brown hair reaching down to the middle of their back, with their 2 bat-ears breaking through the hair cover. Their features are androgynous, almost feminine, and they have deep brown eyes. They're often wearing a denim jacket over a white shirt, and a pair of black jeans and some leather combat boots as their casual attire.

  • Backstory: Born in the Pan-Colonial Union to a Batfolk "defector" researcher as their mother and a human father of some authority in the Union's military, Riley grew up with an idealistic view of what military and military technology did and was. Hoping to follow in their father's footsteps, Riley enrolled into a military academy as soon as they were done with high school, with a special interest in piloting a Warmech. They even had the opportunity to test pilot the then-experimental Vesuvius that their mother had designed, from a combination of both nepotism and the fact that as a half-Batfolk, Riley was well-suited for testing out the experimental sonar system on the Vesuvius.

    • Eventually, Riley graduated and did a tour of duty or two for the PCU. And so their idealistic view started to fracture, as the war on the horizon threatening to envelop Eden made cracks in their loyalty to the PCU. This caused some level of awkwardness and tension between them and their father. Shortly after the war began, Riley soon left the PCU, disillusioned and bitter at the fighting on Eden. Hoping to make some sort of change rather than fight for a cause they couldn't believe in, they instead joined the Angels of Eden, bringing the discontinued experimental Vesuvius with her.

  • Personality: Riley is mostly soft-spoken, being rather awkward at interacting with people. They're observant, perceptive and have strong ideals about doing their best to stop the fighting on Eden. Despite being socially awkward, they're a great team player, and very supportive even if they're not the best at getting their efforts across or breaching their anxiety. They can be a bit bull-headed and stubborn though, owing to how strongly they feel about things on Eden right now.

  • Strengths: Riley has incredible situational awareness owing to their Batfolk hearing and general instincts. They're trained for combat on foot, and they've got a mind for tactical endeavours. They're quick to adapt, and good at coordinating with others.

  • Weaknesses: Riley is...stubborn, and may recklessly stand their ground if sufficiently worked up, especially ideologically. When it comes to piloting, they vastly prefer the Vesuvius, and would probably do less impressively with anything else, especially if it's a lighter mech. This also means they're utterly horrible at stealth, preferring a direct approach.

Warmech

  • Name: XM-104 VWP MP-T "Vesuvius". Specifically the XWF-001 "Heavy" frame variant.

  • Appearance: Enough firepower to level any battlefield's worth of targets.

  • Equipment:

    • 3x Rapid-Fire Ballistic Rifles: This rack of 3 rifles mounted on the mech's left side are able to lay down a torrent of bullets and suppress an area, or fire at multiple targets simultaneously in their arc of fire.

    • 2x Shoulder-Mounted Triple-Barrel Rotary Guns: These chainguns on the Vesuvius's shoulders are especially geared for taking down flying targets, but naturally they're also devastating when aimed at grounded ones as well, firing higher caliber rounds than the ballistic rifles in exchange for burning through ammo quicker and overheating if overused.

    • Point-Defense Gun/CIWS: Mounted on the mech's right shoulder, this gun isn't much in the damage department, but with the assistance of a radome it will lock onto and then shoot down missiles before they can reach their target. And when it comes to close range, it can fire at the more fragile parts of another mech, like the sensors for some decent damage.

    • Hi-Power Beam Rifle: Held in the right hand, this is the Vesuvius's answer to ammo conservation. This beam rifle uses directed energy to burn away at a mech's chassis rather than ballistic rounds, and partly draws from the Vesuvius's potent reactor for energy to make the energy battery within the gun itself last longer. Should that run out, the rifle will automatically go into low power mode, losing a lot of its damage potential as it works to be sustainable with its power draw.

    • Assault Ballistic Cannon: A lighter version of bigger cannon models, designed for use with one arm. In this case, it's in the Vesuvius's left arm. For when things really need to get blown up, or armour needs to be punched through, it's by far the most powerful weapon on the Heavy frame.

    • Combat Knife: A weapon of last resort, the Vesuvius has to detach the Heavy frame in order to access this, its only melee weapon.

    • Experimental Sonar: Designed for Batfolk, this helmet within the cockpit is hooked up to extremely powerful acoustic sensors on the mech's head, allowing a Batfolk to use their extremely good hearing in order to pick up on the tiniest noises, allowing unprecedented environmental awareness and anti-stealth capability that foils most conventional methods.
