The waves roll over in an endless cycle. A world shattered ages ago. Its continents sunk and its great cities resting now as ruins on the seafloor. A tale of hybris and calamitous greed. Now, all that remains are rocks and a few small scattered islands, many of them too small to allow for living. What remains of the people have gathered in ships and barges and toil away in this new expanse of water and wind.

This is Panthalassa. It is a realm of the sea, called the Sunken World and not without cause. The Shattering War has brough to an end the great empires of the past and left behind nothing but ruin. But for many, this is nothing but the ancient history. The people of Panthalassa live now in grand Floating Cities and vast fleets and for many of them this is all they have ever known. Life goes on and humanity does not change. Some seek might, some seek riches, some seek peace. Great powers rise and fall in the unending ocean, as city-states compete, scheme, trade and backstab each other for a bigger slice of pie on the proverbial table.

In this nautical world, the captain of a ship is a king on himself. Traders, admirals, pirates and bounty hunters roam the seas for glory and riches. Adventurers dive down to explore dark temples and to find cursed treasure. Sails stretch under a forceful gale, as ships hunt each other over the blue expanse. Giant beasts let waves ripple from their backs, as they rise out of the water to face any foolish fisherman. And a shimmering blue bird flaps it wings, as stormclouds gather underneath its feathers.

This is Panthalassa, a Realm of Adventure, Riches and Horror. It is a place where Scoundrels can be heroes and Fortune favour the Bold. What legend will you etch into its sea-carved rocks? Or will you just end up as yet one of many that sink into its dark depths, forgotten and forlorn?

Hello, everybody and welcome to the first Spin-Off of Cradle of Gods. If you haven't checked it out, don't worry, its not really necessary to participate in this RP. It is set in the same setting, but this is a standalone adventure that plays before the events of the main-story.

What is Panthalassan Odyssey? At its core it is essentially a pirate-adventure. The idea is a cross between Pirates of the Carribean and Waterworld, but set in a medieval time-period. The focus will be on humor, action and horror, in that order. You will be playing a pirate-crew under the lead of Cpt. Caitlin and go on a number of adventures exploring the world of Panthalassa.

The strength of this RP are a detailed setting, with great worldbuilding and a (hopefully) unique premise. There are a cornucopia of different races available for players, as well as dense lore for anyone who wants to sink their teeth into that. I have several years of experience as GM and will happily help with character-design, story-ideas and more. This RP is open to anyone who wants to join, though a general high quality in writing would be greatly appreciated.

A few things that will not be allowed: Ghosting, Powerplaying, God-Modding and general disrespect for RP-etiquette.

You will play characters that are recruited by the pirate-captain Caitlin Jessamine Holloway, a young, daring woman ready to make her mark on the world. Caitlin will be played by Enirboreh, but apart from her being the captain, players are free to apply for any other position.

The general setting is medieval high fantasy. This plays in a world with no gunpowder, so no cannons, flintlock pistols and the like. Magic users are not really rare, but not extremely common either, so I would advise to keep magical abilities to a minimum, unless you play a sorcerer/mage/wizard/witch, etc. If you want to join and discuss your character, please join us on our Discord-Server before writing out your character-sheet.

Lastly, this RP is open for around six players, not counting Nixer. After these spots are taken, I will close the Sign-Up. I do hope, this draw interest and I'm looking forward to writing with all of you.

Hello, hello. This will be your Captain for the evening.

  • Name: (Captain) Caitlin Jessamine Hollowaynote
  • Age: 18
  • Race: Bog-standard human, of both Dhi'rish and Marognése descent. May claim erroneously that she has bestial blood in her too purely to impress those who she's trying to get her way with.
  • Position: Captain. Highest ranking member of the crew and exclusive helmsman of the ship in battle; excluding the elected Quartermaster who has the ability to veto the Captain's decisions in certain scenarios and steer the vessel when in safety. Caitlin possesses a sense of careful reasoning and prefers to prioritize courtesy over violence, and she has a principle of listening to everyone in her crew no matter their position.
  • Appearance: A slim young woman having obviously only just come out of her teenage years. Around 6ft in height. Wears clothing suitable for a warmer climate, but also takes with her a thick fur coat for emergencies that belonged to her mother back when they lived in Dhi'reime. Athletic build, though lacking in visible strength—suggesting a priority of quick-thinking and manoeuvrability in her fighting style. Carefully keeps herself appealing to look at using makeup and an upright stance in order to maximize her charisma.
  • Personality: Caitlin is an incredibly eager young woman dedicated to recruiting a crew and building up a career of profitable piracy, and unlike most adventurous teens her age she has genuinely mulled it over for many years now since she were a tween. She certainly has the charm for it—or so her mother says, whose word she trusts well enough to be thoroughly convinced—and her confidence is further bolstered by her own theoretical ability to fight. Sure, she may be a touch too cocky and quick to resort to violence when she doesn't get her way, but she thinks these are truly perfect traits for an up-and-coming pirate to have for intimidation's sake. Of course, the inherent sadomasochism that she keeps a tight lid on surely helps in that matter too. All she needs is to maintain her connections and obtain trust, and she'll surely be able to succeed. Right?
  • History:
    • Born right at the tail end of Dhi'reime's violent coup d'état, Caitlin's short childhood spent in the worsening conditions of the northern Floating City was soon cut short when she was whisked away by her parents to a supposedly ‘better’ part of the world—or at least a more politically stable one. Growing up in the outwardly more prosperous Vanorant, she was raised in the inner walls up until the point where her father's guard duties ended as his health declined, and decided to request him to train her in the ways of swordfighting before he became too ill to stand. The lessons only began after they were once again displaced, this time into the ghetto of the docks located outside Vanorant's walls.
    • With her father dedicating himself to training his daughter to become strong, Caitlin gradually became almost as adept in swordfighting as he once had been, and even began to develop her own personal style that better suited her athleticism than her father's raw strength. Realising quickly in her teenage years how dire her family's situation was in the slums, she began to hatch a plan to eventually assemble a crew and hijack one of the ships in order to seek prosperity elsewhere for her family.
    • Now of age, Caitlin has carefully forged her image to be as refined and polite as possible, mimicking the accents of the upper-class she overhears and decorating herself with fake baubles and homemade ‘high quality’ clothing sewn together out of stolen materials. Having perfected her image to a fault in her mind, Caitlin has decided she is ready to pursue her long-developed goal—and is now actively searching through pubs and taverns (or indeed anyplace public) in order to find help for her cause.
  • Abilities:
    • Swordfighting: Under her father's tutelage, Caitlin has become adept with arming swords; more specifically the falchion that she currently wields as a gift from her father. She is swift and graceful in her style, yet emphasizes directness and dirty fighting to contrast this—having no reservations towards the idea of brutalizing her opponents if it'd mean a swifter and more certain death for them. Caitlin has trained herself to be ambidextrous in addition, but her preference remains with her right hand. Caitlin is also athletic, and uses her manoeuvrability in combat in order to overwhelm her opponent(s) and lure them into potential traps.
  • Miscellaneous: Has a strong Vanoranti accent, which in layman's terms would be classified in the real world as “stupidly British.” She's also beginning to indulge in alcohol, and is curious in regards to experimenting with psychoactives and other recreational drugs. Once she finds them, of course.

  • Name: Islwyn
  • Age: 35 (equivalent of a 15-year old human)
  • Race: Morgwan. Graceful swimmers and talented sorcerers, morgwan are the subject of rumors and superstition across most of Panthalassa.
  • Position: Lookout. Islwyn's job is to look for any dangers and make sure the navigator doesn't confidently steer them into the Devil's Dagger. As he has magic, this is not a hard job.
  • Appearance: Yo-ho-ho, pirate sounds, etc. Stands at 5'5.
  • Personality: Surly and sardonic, Islwyn has a prickly personality and a tendency to push people away. This is mainly because of his love for freedom—he dislikes being tied down, and subconsciously fears that if he gets too involved with someone, he'll inevitably abandon them for whatever adventure has caught his eye. While Islwyn has a habit of pointing out people's mistakes, he does his best to be patient with them, and usually serves as a voice of reason. Ultimately, he's an explorer at heart, always keeping one eye trained on the distant horizon. But wanderlust isn't too major a problem...right?
  • History: Born in Ys, Islwyn spent most of his life studying magic with his fellow morgwan. As he grew older, however, he felt a sort of...wanderlust take over him. He didn't want to be cooped up in a tower his whole life, he wanted to be out there, exploring all of Panthalassa. So one day, he stole a boat and sailed to Vanorant. Where he's going from there, he doesn't know yet.
  • Abilities:
    • Magic: Like most morgwan, Islwyn is a skilled sorcerer. His primary focus is weather magic; blasting people with wind, calling down lightning bolts, and rapidly cooling the temperature to produce ice. He's largely self-taught in this area, however, and as such, doesn't quite have a grasp of anything more intricate than "blast people". Or restraint.
    • Dagger: A simple dagger that Islwyn brought with him when he left Ys, enchanted to paralyze any living person it cuts.
    • Eyepatch: Islwyn's eyepatch is enchanted to serve as a sort of spyglass, as a way of making up for his missing eye. By closing his good eye, he can "zoom in" so to speak to see anything in the distance.
  • Misc.:
    • Is accompanied by a sea bunny named Guinevere, whom he rescued from being wedged in between two rocks. She is perhaps the only thing Islwyn has ever truly loved.
    • How did he lose his eye? Simple: he didn't. He was just born without one.
    • Islwyn's mother is Goewyn, one of the greatest sorceresses in Ys. She enchanted both his eyepatch and the dagger he carries with him, and he very much wants to live up to her legacy.

  • Name: Berna
  • Age: 22
  • Race: Bulscy. Wandering nomads from the plains of Tengra, they are hardy warriors with exceptional strength and few equals. Their thick fur helps protect them from the elements, but their appetites and hulking bodies are ''immense.' Their aggressive nature is the cherry on top, and makes them a force to be feared.
  • Position: Cook/Fighter. Berna may be lazy and unambitious, but she's a talented cook and packs a punch. She's a skilled warrior, and a fearsome foe if properly motivated. Her meals are equally fearsome, even when she's cutting corners. Due to her massive calorie intake, cooking is a necessary evil, but it's one of the few things she's remotely passionate about.
  • Appearance: Born and raised Bulscy. Has stopped shaving her fur due to laziness, but will take a few days to grow back. Stands about 10 feet tall.
  • Personality: Berna is a born slacker. Apathethic to a fault, she's interested in keeping herself fed and entertained and not much else. She's remarkably easy and willing to try anything once, but probably won't care enough to do it a second time. In spite of this lack of ambition, she revels in pranks, pulling all sorts of tricks and schemes on those around her to keep herself amused. She has an understated sense of humor, finding the funny side in the worst circumstances and using that to fuel pranks. She's also fond of making others do her dirty work, tricking or pressuring others into doing chores or tasks without her lifting a finger. Both this and her pranks show a surprising amount of cunning and resourcefulness, and she could be a very crafty and accomplished warrior if she ever did anything with it.
    • In spite of her slacker attitude, Berna is a born and raised Bulcy, and can be incredibly dangerous if provoked. It takes a lot to rile her (by Bulscy standards), but if you ever make her mad or upset, she will end you.
  • History: Born and raised in Tengra, Berna spent most of her life living with her fellow Bulcy, hunting large boar and other animals for food. And that was about all they did. They'd go to war with other tribes or even other Bulscy when it suited them, but it was always the same old thing. And it was hard. In spite of her natural strength and aptitude, Berma loathed the very idea of manual labor, preferring to let others do her dirty work. Maybe if they weren't stuck in the boonies, there'd be something to do, but plains and grasslands without a whiff of technology didn't leave many options.
    • Naturally, Berma's uncharacteristic attitude didn't sit well with her fellow Bulscy. Most of them relished their strong bodies and the physical pleasure that came with them. Sensing their discontent and becoming more bored than ever, Berna sought out the nearest Gate and left Tengra behind, landing in Panthalassia. She wasn't sure what awaited her, but it had to be better than the boonies.
  • Abilities: As a Bulcy, Berna is incredibly strong and hardy, and a talented warrior. She's also a skilled surivalist, experienced in foraging for food and living in the wilderness. She can even tame wild beasts, and can ride them like massive steeds once properly trained. She's an incredible if pragmatic cook, if mostly out of necessity. It's one of the few things she puts effort into, even if does cut corners.
  • Misc.: Accompaying Berna in her travels is her pet and noble steed, Bubbles the Boar. Bubbles is massive, even for a wild boar. He takes up a lot of space and even more resources, but Berna insists on keeping him. He's fast and strong, goring enimies with his sharp tusks, but he's a good source of emergency rations or ingredients in a pinch.

  • Name: Alziane Apheratae (though he often just goes by 'Alzie' among friends)
  • Age: 23
  • Race: Scaleblood, diminuitive cousins of the Dragonblood - though for his part, Alzie doesn't look quite like the usual one, missing their normal wings.
  • Position: Rigger, the sailor in charge of managing the rigging of sails and ropes, and frequently found climbing high in the masts, a role the nimble and agile Scaleblood is suited well for, even if he's missing his wings. When needed, he's also a more than competent fighter, and so tends to tag along for fights.
  • Appearance: The little bugger himself. About 4'7" in height, and fairly well-toned under all those clothes, not that you'd catch him without them. Often witnessed hanging upside-down, to the point that one may wonder if that's his natural state. He carries various tools about his body pertaining to his job - intermixed with a probably somewhat unnecessary number of throwing knives.
  • Personality: Alzie, on a surface level, seems pathologically unable to take anything one hundred percent seriously - he spends spare time throwing out wisecracking and snark to the point that you'd be forgiven for thinking it's his actual job on the ship. Though, a few things can set him off, as one might hope they don't have to learn the hard way - prying into his past, mostly, since he doesn't like talking about it, and particularly the topic of his wings is enough to nearly send him into an enraged panic. Speaking of which, he's always got one eye on the future, being about as flighty and agile in his state of mind as he is when he's swinging from mast to mast. Deep down, though, below all that, he's deeply scarred, his current outlook and attitude being as much of a coping mechanism as it is legitimate - he's often found perched on high masts, deep in thought of his past, at least when he thinks no one's looking.
  • History:
    • Alzie was born into a tribe in a cave near the surface of Tengra, and from a young age, he wasn't the most conformant. He wasn't ever much for his lot in life, that of the scout and the pathfinder, preferring to pore over texts with his Dragonblood siblings when given the chance, and hanging out at a place the rest of his kind feared and avoided due to local superstition - the huge underground lake next to their home tunnels, accidentally unearthed decades before his birth. This all, and his rejection of authority, lead him to suffer the label of a failure, a Scaleblood who couldn't, or wouldn't, accept his place.
    • This conflict was never resolved, and the divide between him and his peers grew and grew, until he was practically a stranger in his own home. So one day, scarcely fourteen years old, he took the final step - he hitched a ride with a trade caravan out of the tunnels, and fled, hoping that he would simply be accepted by the traders and settlers on the surface. Of course he'd heard the stories of discrimination against his kind, but surely, it was a thing of the past, right?
    • As he'd come to learn, in his neck of the woods, it was alive and well. He found a place to settle down for a while, sure enough, after a bit of wandering - a human couple, a bit gruff but sweet enough, offering him to stay in their barn for a few days, maybe weeks, before taking his leave. He suspected nothing foul, still with the naive outlook of a then fifteen-year old. It was only when he woke up tightly bound and gagged that he realized what was going on. There was a local trade, forbidden but highly lucrative, in Dragonblood body parts, and since noone would miss him, he was the perfect mark. He struggled and resisted as best he could, but in the end, could do nothing but scream and cry as his wings were ripped from their sockets, the wounds roughly patched up to ensure the couple's new source of income wouldn't bleed out on them. They left that night, promising that they'd be back for his claws, his scales, even his eyes.
    • Thankfully, his saving grace would arrive quickly - that night, the couple's young daughter wandered into the barn on a whim, discovering the still-crying Scaleblood in a canvas bag under a pile of hay. She cut it open and freed him, and through his tears, he managed to explain what had happened, just barely. Horrified, she gave his wounds a bit more care, slipped him some simple clothes, and let him on his way under cover of night. He never did find out what happened with that family, but one can only imagine it wasn't an enjoyable morning, that following day.
    • Horribly disillusioned with his new freedom in Tengra, yet unable to return home, Alzie chose the third option - to travel elsewhere. He remembered having heard of a place, detailed on one map of the realms that the Dragonblood had, that reminded him of his favorite part of home - and one where he could truly be free, even if it wouldn't be easy: Panthalassa. And so, taking whatever Gates and Pathways he could find and gain access to, he made his way across the realms, arriving in the watery hellhole before too long.
    • In Panthalassa, things weren't much easier for him, though they were remarkably less traumatic - it was here, tasting for the first time the freedom of the open ocean, that he took on his new world view, that the past was second to the future, and that nothing could hurt him as long as he didn't care. It wasn't a perfect view, but it got him through the few years of working the rigging on ships he spent before winding up in his current predicament.
  • Abilities:
    • Natural Abilities: As a Scaleblood, Alzie has a few natural abilities to his name - specifically, he's got improved vision in the dark compared to humans, and the ability to breath fire. Though, his firebreath isn't particularly powerful, mostly useful for lighting torches and such, and as a quick distraction in combat.
    • Excellent Climber: To make up for his missing wings, Alzie has trained his agility and strength to impressive levels - he's found on the ship's masts swinging between them like a monkey on crack, keeping his climbing skills in rather literal shipshape.
    • Throwing Skills: Alzie carries plenty of throwing knives at any time, preferring to have the ability to defend himself at a moment's notice, and sure enough, he's not exactly shabby with using them, either, being both proficient in their use in melee, and even more so at their other intended use, being a rather accurate thrower. On the topic of throwing, he also carries a grapnel anywhere he goes, to assist his climbing, and as the occasional improvised weapon.
    • Surprisingly Educated: Some of that education Alzie absorbed from his Dragonblood peers, way back in the day, still sticks with him - he's, rather unlike one would expect from a vagrant traveler like himself, reasonably literate.
  • Misc.:
    • Due to previously described events in his past, Alzie is both touch-shy, on his back in particular, and comes across as rather bashful, specifically never letting anyone see him shirtless to avoid exposing his scars.
    • He's taken sewing as a hobby, largely of necessity to repair his clothes while traveling, and to modify anything new he gets to fit his more unique physiology.

  • Name: Damian Tychis
  • Age: 21
  • Race: Human Godling, descended of Istris
  • Position: Fence. Because of his natural talent for trade, Damian is in charge of buying general ship supplies and of offloading the crew's ill-gotten goods.
  • Appearance: A dark-haired young man, beautiful, with flawless skin and red eyes. Stands about 6'2". On his chest is what appears to be a tattoo of a golden heart - this is actually a divine birthmark. It softly glows in the dark.
  • Personality: By all accounts charming and debonair, Damian is bold and eager to prove himself. He possesses a kind spirit and a keen understanding of relationships, and is not above using his beauty and charisma to manipulate others. However, he desires genuine companionship above anything else, and so avoids abusing his charm on those he considers friends.
  • History:
    • Born to Darren, a merchant from Rousson in Arcada, Damian's only memories of his mother were fragments from his infancy. She had passed away from an illness before he was even old enough to walk. His widower father was nonetheless able to raise the boy on his own, teaching him the skills of trade and barter, as well as how to avoid getting eaten by monsters that roamed the shadowy corners. Damian was expected to inherit the family business, of course, but that would never satisfy him.
    • After one too many nights of fist-fighting with local street rats, Damian had an arguement with his father that led to them talking about his mother. His mother had been some beautiful traveler, he knew, who settled down only after falling in unexpected love. He'd never known her origins; his father hadn't really mentioned it. When Damian pressed, Darren revealed the truth of his mother's lineage. Damian had the blood of a dead god. It was the reason for Damian's strength and beauty. She'd mentioned having come from Panthalassa, but even Darren did not know what her true realm of origin was.
    • Damian ruminated on this for a while. He spent a few more years under his father's tutelage, then one day, he passed through scarlet tapestries to Panthalassa and did not return. He had decided to seek a life of his own making, rather than inherit the life of his father. Having heard tales of piracy, and finding the thought of high seas hopelessly endearing, it was no surprise what his destination would be.
  • Abilities:
    • Gift of Gab: Damian is a skilled speaker, good at both bartering and winning a crowd.
    • Lover Boy: Befitting a child of Istris, Damian has natural understanding of the ins and outs of personal relationships. It helps with influencing people, and he makes a decent relationship councilor in a pinch.
    • Divine Strength: Somewhat stronger, faster, and tougher than a human should be. As he's never really undergone any real physical stress, he's not blatantly superhuman, but he can easily keep up with professional athletes despite his lack of training.
    • Knuckledusters: Damian's preferred weapons, easily concealed in a pocket, but potentially quite deadly. He's not an expert fighter, but he knows how to throw a decent punch.
  • Misc.:
    • Has a lucky coin, which he occasionally flips to make a decision.
    • Has a good eye for appraising valuables.

  • Name: Bennad

  • Age: 47

  • Race: Morgwan, an enlightened species of humanoids with amphibian features.

  • Position: Navigator, Bennad uses his knowledge of constellations to determine the location of the ship and keep it on course. His predictive abilites don't hurt in this area either.

  • Appearance: Bennad, like most of his people is tall and willowy. His skin resembles the yellow and black mottling of a tiger salamander, and is covered in a thin layer of moisture, as befitting an amphibian he is completely devoid of any hair. He wears a robe of tattered grey fabric, concealing himself under its hood. his expression seldom strays from the emotionless, but there is a certain intesity in his eyes that undermines his apparant stoicism. His face is gaunt.

  • Personality: Bennad doesn't really know where he is going in his life, his natural confidence has been tempered by his misfortune and he no longer posesses the clarity of purpose that he once had. Naturally, he still resents the people of Ys for their treatment of him and he desperately wants to make a name for himself in spite of his circumstances. With others he is somewhat aloof, though not especially hostile.

  • History: Like many of his race, Bennad has been interested in the workings of magic since his youth. Unlike others, this interest was eclipsed by his wonder at the heavens above. He spent most of his free hours in childhood with his telescope, observing constellations. His interest paid off, and he was able to secure an apprenticeship under a fairly prestigious wizard and astrologer, who cemented much of his knoweldge in the art. After graduating from her tutelage, it seemed by all accounts that Bennad was on a course for great success save for one thing, his growing disbelief in the orthodoxy of the Morgwan. They should not, he argued, venerate the sorceress Morgan, for despite he reputation as a hero, many other peoples knew her as a monster. Further he argued, that their pursuit of magic had faltered, seeking power instead of truth. Naturally this didn't win him any favors and he chose to flee his homeland to avoid incarceration or execution. Work as a navigator was the only proper job he could find, since many other magical instiutions had blacklisted him leading him to become a part of Caitilin's crew.

  • Abilities:
    • Navigation: Bennad is a talented mundane navigator, and knows the locations of the stars, allowing him to keep track of their location even when miles from shore.

    • Swimming: Bennad can swim well like most of his people, though no better or worse than the typical Morgwan.

    • Standard Astrology: Bennad can use the stars and other celestial bodies to derive fairly accurate, if incomplete predictions about one's fortunes in the recent future, allowing some foresight for him and his crewmates.

    • Commune With Celestial: A far more unorthodox power and one he stumbled upon* more or less accidentally. Bennad may conduct a ritual, using material correspsonding with the planet in question, to speak with the spirit of a celestial body. The minds of such beings, if they even exist in the manner Bennad believes, are opaque to say the least, and much of what they say is near incomprehensible. Furthermore each planet can only speak on matters within a specific and narrow area. As of yet, Bennad has only discovered the ritual for communing with the evening star, which reigns over duality and decay, though he suspects variants of it exist.

Name: Fairuza Mezaltarim/“Zal”

Age: 50 (looks 20+)

Race: Bloodlord of the Samewan Bloodclans of Lemuria.

Position: Alchemist/”doctor”? Well, she knows a lot about anatomy and mixing things together, and she *does* like to help others and test out new things, so it’s a natural role!

Appearance: Just a nice doctor lady person. She has an excellent and believable evil laugh. Usually carries more flasks and bottles than you’d believe she could have on her person at once. Enjoys dressing well and is a little vain.

Personality: Zal is an intensely curious and driven person. She wants to learn, create, and be recognized as a genius in alchemy. However, she’s not reckless (usually) and only has to try something once to know it’s not a good idea (usually) and won’t endanger others for her own interests. This attitude only extends to her “official” work. Personal projects are quite another story, and unfortunately, the line can be blurred. Her interest in “bio-alchemy” is high, and taking care of her patients is very important to the young alchemist. Just as important as finding out what went wrong this time, in fact. A friend is someone to be aided at all costs, and Zal can be genuinely frightening if something angers her. Another Bloodlord is an enemy on sight unless they prove themselves, and enemy = death right away. Those who disdain her work or knowledge, in general, tend to really annoy the young woman, and she can be safely accused of focusing on the results of an experiment rather than the method but she does have a strong sense of empathy. Zal likes to socialize as well as the next person (provided she avoids certain music), and she can be counted on for some exciting party favors. Deep down she has a lust to do something amazing, and while as mentioned she isn’t usually reckless, if something looks like it will put her on the map or just show off her skills, well then, you’d better start asking what that smell coming out of her cabin might be or why she’s giggling quite so much……

History: A clever young apprentice to a glassblower, Zal was noticed by an influential Bloodlord who was “considering” several candidates. Why she was finally chosen Fairuza was never entirely sure, but nonetheless, she was transformed during one cold desert night after her 23rd birthday. It was an agonizing and difficult process, the worst pain imaginable, but in the end, she felt every moment was worth it. Her parents were likewise very pleased, not least because she was the fifth in her family and their prospects for a good marriage were poor. Fairuza continued in her studies for the next ten years, but found her interests drifting to the study of life rather than that of creating items for sale. Her mentor soon grew weary of her incessant questions and suggested she travel to his own home, Rousson, to satisfy her curiosity about all things related to the Bloodlords. An attack by a rival clan that resulted in the death of her parents and an injury to her patron only encouraged her choice to strike out on her own.

Zal moved by caravan for months, learning the basics of mixing and alchemy from an herbalist who was a fellow passenger. During her travels, she gradually become more confident in herself as a Bloodlord and took blood from (usually) willing donors until it no longer disgusted her. Fairuzas' entrance to Rousson, however, was a case of severe culture shock. She’d been warned by her patron that the culture of the Bloodlords who lived there was rife with cruelty and intrigue, but the reality of it was something to behold. Zal didn’t make a good impression at first until she displayed her alchemical talents, and the novelty-starved population embraced her. Zal still made a few enemies, and was forced to cause the death of two influential Bloodlords before she decided to leave the city after a few years.

Her travels took her then to Kamellotte. Zal was able to mostly stay above suspicion, given that the reputation of the Rousson Bloodlords was so toxic in other lands. Her skin color did arouse some interest from some handsome lords and ladies, and she was forced to kill a few minstrels, but on the whole, it was a pleasant time in her life. Still, however, her lust for knowledge drove the young woman on to expand her skills and education. After a few years, she decided to press on, and close to thirty years after she’d been transformed Fairuza Mezaltarim arrived in Panthalassa.

She instantly fell in love with the place. Having been born and raised in a desert, she’d grown up listening in wonder to the tales of endless water, and indeed had taken any opportunity to go swimming or even bathe in a tub in the years that followed in order to get a sense for what the Sea would feel like when she finally saw it for herself. The young Bloodlord was fortunate enough to secure a nice place to live in Marogné and settled in as a well-regarded local healer and herbalist, with a hidden side trade as an alchemist. She also started looking around for her own “apprentice.” After all, she had a lot to teach, and if she was going to go home sometime, she wanted someone else in her corner. Then the offer came to “serve” on a pirate ship as its doctor. What luck! She could see more of the ocean, and perhaps out there she’d discover even more secrets!

Abilities: Fairuza is well-versed in the inner gooey bits of most of the races of the world, by illustrations if not by personal experience. She can mix up a wide variety of potions, medicines, and ointments that will *usually* do what she intends, even if the results might not be perfect (your wound has been healed, but your hair color has changed and you might hallucinate butterflies for a few days). Thanks to her upbringing Zal is also reasonably skilled in using a knife and throws a decent punch or kick to the sensitive bits. Knows a lot about poisons, botany, glassware, and a little about magic. Very literate. Her blood magic skills are at a very low level, and so far, all she’s managed is to do is increase her physical abilities or healing.

Misc.: Since she came on board the number of rats and mice has gone down precipitously. She claims it’s because she also brought a cat with her, but no one’s seen one yet…..

Name: Tobias Innes (real name Alasdair Douglass)

Age: 58

Race: Human. Human is as human does.

Position: Quartermaster, by virtue of being a veteran sea dog and Cait's "mentor"

Appearance: Wearing a glove to cover his prosthetic hand for the occasion.

Personality: Tobias is something of a grumpy old man, wizened and jaded from experience, though still with a boundless wild heart that's not been slowed by the ravages of time. He leaps headfirst, cackling wildly, into the fray when danger approaches, cautiously reckless. He's gruff, rough, but with a softer side to him, especially as the sun dies down and the crew gathers round to tell stories, both real and greatly exaggerated. A harsh teacher, he expects his respect to be earned, not given, by a capable authority.

History: Born in Dunskye, Tobias could swim for as long as he could walk, growing up in one of the many coastal fishing villages. Fittingly, he eventually helped crew one of these ships, sailing out into the blue to go haul fish for the people back home. Those were the days of a young man just entering adulthood.

  • And he grew more restless, more curious, more...adventurous. From fishing to trade, to military, to pirates, Tobias crewed many more ships in various positions of authority. From a lowly rigger or lookout, to even the captain when the previous one met their end. Tobias has seen much of what the world has to offer, yet knows he hasn't seen it all. Ever wandering from ship to ship, he became a reasonably well known name in the world of the sea rogues for his exploits across dozens of ships. "Iron Hand Toby" as he was later known, on account of the iron hand he wears to replace his lost one, a story that Tobias shares in many different iterations, all claiming that they're the true version. Nobody knows if Tobias has ever told the true story behind how he lost his hand, for the one consistent fact across each story is that he was the sole survivor of his ship capsizing. What follows often tends to be washing ashore some dangerous hellscape island or a tropical paradise of exotic beauties, depending on the venue, and his struggle to escape or unfortunate displeasure to leave. Eventually he ended up in a bar with some young upstart captain trying to find a crew and, with an internal smirk and, knowing he wasn't getting any younger, decided to join and mentor the young Cait in her endeavours.

Abilities:

  • Swordsmanship: Tobias is naturally a talented wielder of the sword, from his many years sailing the seas of the Realms as a sailor and pirate alike. He's also equally skilled with both hands owing to having to initially adjust to his missing dominant hand before the prosthetic.

  • Prosthetic Hand: Speaking of which, Tobias' Relic-enhanced hand that's bound the cold, lifeless metal hand to his flesh, moving it as if it were his flesh-and-blood hand. The fingers hold all sorts of nifty little tools, such as a tiny knife for precision cutting, a flint and steel, and the index finger fires out a tiny needle on a crossbow mechanism, often a venomous spine from some ocean creature. The entire hand may also fire out on a chain to grab onto distant objects and then pull it in or pull Tobias towards. It's also an effective parrying tool, and still hurts like hell if you get clubbed with it.

  • Seamanship: Tobias has seen many a ship in his day, and so knows exactly how things should be flowing both above, on and below decks most efficiently. Though he's resigned himself to the task of quartermaster, he could in theory fill in any menial task with some degree of competence. He runs a tight ship, literally.
