September 26th, 2021, approximately 2:14AM local time - Seattle outskirts

Three teenage boys around fifteen and sixteen years old were outside a rundown, abandoned factory building. Two African Americans, and one Caucasian, one of the two African American boys was messing with his smart phone.

"There, got it! We're live!" he exclaimed, holding the phone up in triumph. "Just gotta give it a minute for people to show, see if the signal's good," he continued, and watched the screen, the preview of the Twitch showing basically just him and some of the Seattle skyline in the background.

"How's it looking?" the other African American boy asked.

"Give it a minute, man. Give it a minute," the first responded, glancing to his friend briefly before looking back at the screen. "'Aight, I think we're good," he added with a smile. "Yo we got over fifty viewers! Niiice."

He switched gears on his enthusiasm, as he spoke out to the apparent internet audience. "Anyway, hey, what's up Twitch, It's Jules Adkins, AKA ParaGhost! Tonight we're checking out this old factory place, my cousin told me about. People be saying it's haunted and shit. It's supposed to be pretty spooky, but we ain't afraid of that, right guys?" He turned his phone to put the two other boys in view.

"Yep, that's right," the Caucasian boy said in a low energy sort of tone, holding a hand up and throwing horns.

"Yeah man, it's gonna be great!" the other African American boy said more enthusiastically.

"Right, try not to sound too excited, Alex," Jules said sarcastically to the Caucasian boy, then both he and the other African American boy cracked up in laughter. Then Jules returned his attention to the phone. "So, as always I'm joined by my two friends, Alex, and of course my main man, Odin."

"Yeah, alright alright," Odin commented, snapping his fingers.

They spent some more time chatting and shooting the crap with each other, then after five more minutes or so, they finally ventured into the abandoned factory building. The building was concrete and very square, with the first floor they entered into being very open and bare; square cutouts ran along the floors where equipment used to be housed, now all long gone. It was dirty, with graffiti markings on most of the walls, but with almost no trash, and very little actually left behind.

"So like, I don't know what they used to make in this place, but you can see they took like everything with them when they left," Jules commented as moved around slowly, panning the view from the smartphone around.

"It's real cold in here," Alex mentioned.

"Boy of course it's cold! It's September! I told you to wear your good coat!" Odin snarked to him. Jules and Odin both chuckled a bit again, and the boys moved on to a large staircase off to one side of the building, which had stairs going up and stairs going down. They approached the stairs going down, then reeled back a bit. "Ugh! What is that? Smells nasty!" Odin complained.

"Oh, I've smelled this before," Alex commented, waving a hand in front of his face. "That's a dead raccoon."

"You sure, Alex?" Jules asked.

"No joke, man, I'm like a hundred percent positive, there's a dead raccoon down there, no joke," Alex answered, repeating himself and pointing down the stairs.

"Man, I don't wanna go down and see no stinky dead raccoon!" Odin said, shaking his head.

"Alright alright, what's chat think, huh? Should we go downstairs and see this stinky dead raccoon?" Jules asked to his phone in a joking sort of tone. He waited a bit as a couple of messages slowly loaded in, then smiled a bit mischievously. "I dunno Odin, I'm thinking we have to; chat seems pretty insistent."

"Easy for them to say, they don't have to smell it!" Odin pointed out.

"Well look how 'bout this, we're gonna go down there, but after we check out the upstairs. Sound good? Sound good?" Jules turned the phone towards Alex, who gave a nod.

"Yeah let's go upstairs," Alex agreed.

The boys headed up and checked out the second floor. Up there was a hallway and separate rooms for smaller workspaces, but otherwise it was much like the first floor. They made their way down the hall, showing the empty rooms to the phone camera with the flashlight as they passed each one.

"Hey man, I'm getting a weird vibe up here," Alex commented.

"Relax man, it's nothing," Jules assured him, then they came to a stop near the end of the hall. "Ah shoot, I think something might be wrong with the stream. Come look at this." Jules waved Alex over and held the phone out, messing with some settings. As Jules worked to sort out the issue, he switched feed to the front facing camera, showing himself, Alex standing next to him, and a disheveled clown face looming behind their shoulders, just between them. Both boys had their eyes widen and then yelled in panic, taking off running down the hall. As he ran, Jules looked back down at the phone, muttering, "oh crap man, oh crap oh crap..."

Then he discreetly ended the stream, and stopped his running, and started laughing. Alex stopped and also started laughing. "Woo! We got them good! This is gonna go crazy online!" Jules cheered, and the two boys high fived.

"Alright, now let's go home already. Seriously it's freezing here," Alex said, and the three boys made their way out of the factory.

6 hours, 37 minutes later, C.O.A.S.T. facility outside Seattle - team briefing room

The briefing screen just finished playing a cut up version of the live stream the boys had made. Chief Malone Abram, a stout, gruff looking man with pale skin and red hair, addressed the few agents in the room. He was one of their superior officers at the facility; the armband he wore identified him as a Spellcaster Warlock. "So, you're here to be assigned to the new team being formed, currently designated as Delta Team. Of course, not all the transfers are here yet, and ordinarily we'd give you some time to actually get to know each other first. However, the whole reason this team is being formed is because we don't have enough active teams in this area. You're going to have to be deployed ahead of schedule, with agents that can be made available from other teams to fill your gaps," Malone informed them, being very no nonsense about it. Then he turned his attention back to the briefing screen.

"We've had two Time Mediums already warning ahead about this live stream being something significant we'd have to look out for. The tech department was able to isolate it, and fill the viewership with some fake numbers; nobody but us actually saw it, and no video will be saved on the website, which should just appear as a sort of glitch to the boys. Now of course, that little jump scare at the end..." The chief waved for the technician at the computer to roll back to the part of the video showing the clown face. "That's just their third friend, 'Odin', with his hoodie over his head and a Halloween mask that they scribbled on. You can see it more clearly with the contrast up," Malone explained, as the technician upped the contrast of the photo and then showed a side by side comparison with a clown mask being sold on Ebay, showing that it was indeed clearly just the third boy, and the three of them pulling an elaborate prank.

"So the good news is it seems as if the boys have no idea that they actually did find something genuine on camera. Of course the secrecy department is following up on them just in case, but that's not our concern. No, for us, it would be... That." Malone had waited a few moments for the technician to get to the right part of the stream. It wasn't far before, to when the boys were walking down the hallway and briefly looking the camera into the rooms on the side. The technician paused it there, and once again turned the contrast up. Near completely invisible before, a distinct silhouette in the middle of the room came into view. It looked roughly humanoid, with a hunched over posture and very long arms that went all the way to the floor. The technician made the feed play in slow motion, showing that the figure was clearly moving across the room, and then raising its head just as the boys moved the camera so it was no longer in view.

"We're not sure what kind of Bump it is. We're assuming some kind of apparition or spirit, but it could be a ghost or something else; we don't have a lot to go off of," Malone stated, staring at the picture of the Bump with a disdain like a dad noticing a mysterious stain on his favorite carpet. "We're also not sure why it's so important, but the Mediums who flagged it insisted it was of high significance. So, your job is to get in there, identify the Bump, and assess the situation on the ground. If it shows aggression, you're authorized to neutralize it." With that, the chief turned his attention back to the agents in the room. "Any questions?"

The briefing room

Martin Gutierrez sat in a chair watching and listening to the briefing with Diego, in his dog form, curled up by his feet. As he watched, every so often he gently stroked the dog's head. At the clown jump scare, Diego bolted up, barking, before Martin shot the dog a look.

"¡No! ¡Siéntate!" Martin commanded, and Diego went quiet, staring at the screen with a forceful look on its face.

He sighed, looking concerned as the video rewound to the part with the ghost. He pulled his hand away from Diego and clasped his hands together, in thought.

"Do we even know if it's a Bump yet?" he asked. "Wouldn't sending an armed team into the building potentially provoke it into hostility? Especially if we go in packing salt and holy symbols and the like."

He recognized he was being a bit naive, but then, he was the one who had decided to befriend a vampiric predator. He took another glance at Diego, who was looking up at him curiously. Diego scratched his side with his leg, still alert.

Gene Sheppard sat at his chair, with his laptop, typing in some notes about the video he just saw as well as the information he got from the briefing. And being a time medium, he would know what would be up. And he decides to answer Martin's question.

"You'll have to trust us Time Mediums. I had this vision where I should check out this particular video. And it led me to check it out, and there it was. Saw it right there. Still need to get some premonition on what type it is though. And I know once we head up there, it most certainly won't be a waste of time. We have to do this."

Gene finishes typing before drawing his attention to a brief moment, looking at Diego. Sensing he was something more than a mere dog.

Way too early - Briefing Room

Kat silently cursed at how early she had to get up—it wasn't even technically 9am yet!—as she looked at the report. It briefly reminded her of the great clown sightings of 2016. She had initially written thwm off as a joke or marketing campaign, but in light of recent events she was willing to be more open-minded and allow a bunch of conspiracies to unfold in her mind.

But no, the Bump was something else entirely. Some other entity, equally inhuman but less conspicuous. And taking it down was the mission of the Delta Team. Perhaps named after the triangle-like symbol given its three members (even if it truly meant "four"), or maybe because it was representative of the change they were supposed to bring. Kat wasn't sure, but whatever distracted her from the bizarre nightmare with four legs pretending to be a dog, the better.

She lifted her hand to ask a question.

"What's the plan? Do we lure it out with that thing?" She pointed at Diego.

Team briefing room

"We've noticed that the Bump in question is somewhat transparent. If you look closely here, there's a crack in the opposite wall that can be seen through it," Malone said, pointing to part of the image where indeed there was a visible crack in the far wall, which could be seen running along the wall to where the silhouette was and through it. "We're thus assuming it's incorporeal, hence the guess that it's an apparition or spirit. However, you do bring up an important point," he continued, referring to Martin. "We know that those boys walked out of there safe and sound. At present they're at the Alex boy's house, probably asleep. So whatever it is, either it's not territorial or aggressive enough to have attacked them, or whatever it does doesn't cause immediate physical harm."

"However, both of our intel Mediums had vivid dreams about this, one of them for the past two nights in a row. We know that it wouldn't be flagged so explicitly if it was simply a minor incident. So, while we don't know if it's actually dangerous, we do know it's important. Since we already know a Bump is there, and we don't know what its capabilities are, command isn't going to send an unarmed investigation team in, as that could be recklessly endangering them. We don't expect you to immediately attack it; just to be ready to fight it if needed to," Malone explained at length, looking at the three agents. "As I said, your primary objective is to identify more information about the Bump itself, and assess what the situation there is in more detail. Eliminating the Bump will only be a priority if it does turn hostile. You're at your own discretion as to how to proceed on those objectives."

"Now of course, if it's completely incorporeal, you'll probably need magic if it turns into a fight. We still don't have a full transfer of any Witches or Warlocks for Delta yet, but we have one available to accompany you for this operation," Malone went on, and pointed to the other person in the room besides the technician, who was standing at the back of the briefing room. "Agents, I want you to meet Thomas Pensow. He's on loan to us from MI6."

"Just Tom is fine," Tom said, his British accent distinct as he stepped forward. "Tell me, what do we know about the building itself?"

"There's not much to tell, actually," Malone answered, picking up a paper from the desk in front of him. "It was built in the late eighties for a company that built wine presses. They went out of business in two thousand and eight during the recession, and the building's been abandoned since. No workplace fatalities or serious injuries ever occurred, and the only police incident involving it after its abandonment was one guy getting arrested for narcotics distribution, and nobody got hurt then either. If it's a haunting of someone who died there, it would have to have been recent and so far undocumented. As far as we can tell the only thing happening with it these days is homeless people occasionally sleeping in it."

"The boys mentioned a dead smell coming from the basement. Perhaps someone died down there," Tom suggested as a possibility.

Malone nodded. "Yes, we'll want you to investigate that while you're there."

Briefing room

Martin turned towards Kat, frowning.

"Diego is not a thing," he said, sounding kind of hurt. "He's not a normal dog, but he's not just a thing. He's my friend. Either way, I'm not sure what Diego would be able to do to a ghost." Trying not to look at Kat, he turned his attention back to Malone. He nodded, looking a little uncomfortable.

"Understood, sir," Martin responded, sounding as neutral as he could. He didn't want to admit it, but he was nervous. This was his first field mission, and while he had been briefed on Bumps, it was very different from actually encountering them.

He had been somewhat unsettled by ghost stories when he was younger. He was able to brush them off when he was convinced they were just that, stories. But now he knew better. Ghosts were real.

Mythical beasts were one thing, but ghosts were another thing entirely. He could handle animals.

His worried thoughts were distracted by Tom entering the discussion, and Malone explained the status of the building.

"I'll be on guard. If there is someone dead down there, I wouldn't doubt the Bump would have something to do with that," Gene closes his laptop before standing up and looking at Diego.

"I wonder how the dog will do? You know, animals seem to have that sense danger is nearby. And he looks to be that special sort," he says, not fully aware what Diego is. "I'll be sure to keep an eye out, too."

He pulls out a journal and starts writing down notes, as a nice back-up. Basically writing down what he typed on his laptop. It could be good back-up after all.

"Hmm, yes, someone killed by the Bump is also a possibility. I'm sure you'll find out once you're on the scene," Malone thought aloud after Gene brought up the idea. "Now, there is some good news I forgot to tell you. We may not have full transfers for other field agents in Delta Team yet, but we do already have a logistics agent for you." Logistics agents were around to help field agents like themselves in more supplementary roles, most often getting items for the field agents between missions, and doing the driving. "Agent Ruskin should be in the vehicle bay right now, getting your truck ready. Unless there's anything else you need, you're free to be dismissed," the chief told them.

Tom headed for the door without another word.

Team briefing room

A woman in a suit enters after being late somehow. This is... not normal for her. Her shadow though while it looks and acts normal (For non bumps!), hides her bump. Spider is just wondering what another bump is up to THIS TIME. Zoya though seems likes she fits in with the way she entered. And she does.

"And I TOLD you that we had to buy more food from the store! I'm late because of you!"

Someone observant would swear that Zoya's shadow looked like it had spider legs coming out of its back for a moment before going back to normal. Zoya knew Spider just shrugged with 8 legs by glancing at her briefly changed shadow.

"Sorry about being late, I had to stop by the store to buy snacks."

What was not said was this was for SPIDER not herself!

Briefing Room

"Sorry, I'm still not used to seeing Bumps" Kat answered, still not quite taking her eyes away from Diego. To think something so normal-looking wasn't so, had shaken her assumptions of the world. She supposed she should feel lucky about detecting warnings on everything, but somehow that didn't make her feel better.

The investigation about the surrounding area where the Bump was detected continued, now with an agent straight from MI 6. It truly was important if it managed to become international affair.

However, that wasn't the last addition. A tall woman with short hair entered the room. Her presence practically buzzed with all sorts of sigils and glyphs indicating too many legs for a single person. Kat couldn't quite look at her as she entered the room.

"I didn't think they would let in so many animals. I've always been more of a cat person, haha" she weakly laughed to herself, trying to cut some tension.

Briefing room

Zoya looks at Kat and noticed that she could not look at herself directly. Knowing the workplace, she is likely able to detect other bumps... Yea. Spider is to blame. Despite being in her compact form, she is still detectable to other bumps and those who can detect said bumps...

"So what is the nature of the bump in question? Because I have someone who would have the view from the other side."

She points at her own shadow, and on cue spider legs come out of it before the legs vanish. In other words, pointing at a friendly bump.

"And yes, she is aware of what is going on."

This is referring to Spider.

"Agent Intigo, at least you didn't miss the entire operation," Malone said, picking up a small manila folder with the information they had so far, and passing it to Zoya. "But you did miss the briefing, so you'll have to catch yourself up on the way there." He watched the legs coming out of the shadow and showed no surprise.

"And make sure to talk to your logistics agent if you're going to need snacks; they can make sure there's some ready for you here. That way you can actually show up on time in the future," the chief added rather nonchalantly.

In a few seconds, the humanoid bump with spider legs coming out of her back jumps out of Zoya's shadow and snatches the folder, before reading it at an equally fast speed. Spider then hands it over to Zoya at NORMAL speeds who reads it at a much more human speed.

Spider looks really friggin creepy. Between spider eyes and the nonhuman color of said eyes, her humanoid look, and the spider legs coming out of her back... yea. Bump.

"I think this is a spirit of some sort based of what we know. I'd guess it may be like spider if it can grab things physically."

Spider is eating a raw steak. So that is what Zoya meant about snacks... She looks at Malone and raises the eyebrows of the eyes on her left side before devouring the steak in seconds.

"What? I eat raw flesh. Now I think this is a spirit we are dealing with due to the smell of something dead and being intangible. But it could also be able to possess mortals. I would have to see their behavior to make further deductions."

Zoya has a necklace of some sort on and the thing attached is covered in a case for some reason.

The briefing room -> heading out

Martin stood, once the meeting was adjourned.

"Good to hear. Thank you, sir," he responded to Malone, and gestured for Diego. "Diego, ven aquí, vámonos," Martin commanded, and Diego instantly stood, starting to follow Martin out of the room. His eyes widened when he noticed the spidery shadow emerging from the new girl's back. It was Martin's cue to exit quicker.

Martin made his way down the hall towards the vehicle bay. He kept a strong grip on Diego's harness leash, the two walking beside one another.

Diego shuffled slightly as he walked, looking slightly agitated. He sniffed, yipping a bit.

"You hungry? ¿Tienes hambre, Diego?" Martin asked, pulling a meaty treat out of his pack and holding it down towards the Bump, who snatched it and chewed it hungrily. Petting Diego gently, he noticed the looks he was getting from some of the other passing agents and re-attained his composure, Diego going quiet and wagging his tail happily as the two walked.

This agent stuff was going to take more time to get down.

Leaving the briefing room

Spider enters Zoya's shadow again and the two of them leave the room with Martin. Spider looks at Diego for a moment via leaning over and at the same time Zoya's shadow acts unnaturally before going back to normal.

"So I have the blessed items, though no holy water. You need to look out for signs of what else that bump is capable of, and see if it can kill or possess other humans. That is the most likely cause of concern."

Zoya seems like she's talking to herself but this is directed to Spider. She seems to be glancing at her own shadow. This would explain why she was socially awkward...

Zoya's shadow gives a thumbs up after hearing that. Then goes back to being hidden.

"Good, we have the backup supplies if we have to use those. Doubled of course!"

Team briefing room

Malone rolled his eyes and picked up a folder unrelated to the current mission to start reading through.

Vehicle bay

Martin was probably imagining some of the looks he was getting; this was B.R.O.O.M., where weird things were dealt with everyday, so what looked like a dog didn't get much special attention. The only person with a significant reaction was a young blonde woman who looked on with a jealous expression and remarked, "a dog? Why can't I have a dog? Have to have these stupid things instead..." She walked away beside a man of similar age, grumbling the whole time.

The vehicle bay, which was really just a large, glorified garage, held the facility's selection of vehicles. Most were large vehicles to accommodate a whole team, and were those that could plausibly just be regular civilian vehicles.

... So it was mostly a lot of moving trucks, and produce trucks. (At least they were somewhat fitted out on the insides.)

At this early in the morning, there wasn't much activity going on yet. One truck off to the side was having some kind of maintenance done on it by a couple of guys. A U-Haul truck had a couple of guys loading things into the back, while a third was overseeing and checking things off on a clipboard. He noticed Martin and Zoya and waved them over with the clipboard. He was a scrawny African American man with a bald head and thick glasses on, and was beaming with a big smile. "Hey! Delta Team right?! Getting you ready right over here!" he called, then approached Martin for a handshake. "Agent Chuck Ruskin," Chuck introduced himself. "I'm guessing you're one of the Heralds? Mister Gutierrez, right?"

Tom was already sitting in the passenger seat of the truck, reading a book.

Zoya puts on her trench coat and looks at the truck. Someone is already inside it. Martin by the looks of it has a... dog? Right one of those creatures that exist physically. So another herold of one like herself. It's hard to tell what the one in the truck is, but he's reading. Maybe not a herold based off Spider's non-reaction? Hard to tell.

She enters the truck and noticed that her shadow was... normal again. Uh oh. Where did-

And Spider already was behind Chuck in seconds looking at the clipboard contents. She is not touching him, but if he were to look behind himself... well she IS awfully stealthy given her speed and all.

Zoya chooses to say nothing about this, just waiting in the truck on the passenger side behind Tom and waits for Spider to finish investigating.

Martin nodded, smiling at Ruskin and approaching. He reached out to return the handshake.

"Yep. Agent Martin Gutierrez. Reporting for duty," he replied. "And this is Diego," he introduced, petting Diego, who started panting and wagging his tail. A few licks of his hand, and Diego sat up, looking friendly to his master. "¡Buen perro!" Martin laughed, then turned his attention back to Ruskin.

"He always gets affectionate after he's given treats," Martin explained. "He'll calm down soon."

The vehicle bay

At the top of the clipboard was a list of the agents expected to go on the operation, which the only name checked off was, 'Thomas Pensow'. Below that was a list of items which were all checked off. Spider would see 'camcorders', 'religious icons', and 'scented candles' up at the top. Then Chuck was moving his hand down as he was talking to Martin.

"It's a shame we couldn't meet properly before having to deploy. We don't have time for special requests now, but after this you guys let me know what you want and I'll do what I can. I've taken the liberty of getting some essentials for this operation plus-" That was when he finally turned and noticed Spider, and was startled for a moment, but then squinted at her and looked down at his clipboard again. "You must be the bump of the other Herald, of Miss Intigo; that makes you uh... 'Spider', they call you?" he wondered as he regarded his checklist, "so Miss Intigo is around here, yes?"

The back of the U-Haul truck, rather than just being an empty storage area, was furnished with seats along one side, and a line of tables on the opposite side, with boxes underneath them that the two loaders were putting in. Above the desks was racks along the wall for placing things, but nothing was there currently. At the end of the row of tables was a sealed down laptop.

Spider did notice the items at the top of the list. Camcorders for recording, religious icons for deterring other hostile bumps, and scented candles. Well the candles must have a use in some sort of sealing or banishing ritual.

"Yes Zoya is already in the truck. And yes, everyone refers to me as Spider. You mortals really like using nicknames..."

She flies over and is now next to Chuck.

"I still think the spirit in question is hiding something. And since the last sighting of it was in the factory and the witnesses left... has anyone seen them since they left the factory? And were they acting abnormally in anyway, including a possible change in personality? Was the bump possibly sighted outside of the factory where it was found? I think the next step is to find the witnesses if possible, then we can get more info from them. That and to check for other things."

Spider wants to see if there are other signs of if the bump in question LEFT the factory... and the possible travel methods.

I have no idea what to put here, oh well!

Chuck regarded Spider with a concerned and somewhat incredulous expression. "Um, you should've asked the officer who gave you the briefing those things, not me," Chuck said, clearly somewhat nervous and overwhelmed. "Plus we don't usually talk to witnesses unless they're still on scene when we show up. Talking to witnesses after the fact is handled by the Secrecy Department... And besides from what I read on the intel report it seemed like they didn't actually witness the Bump, so I don't see what we'd get from talking with them. As for the rest, uh..." He trailed off, trying to think about the answers to the rest of what Spider asked.

"The only thing in the file was about the live stream; if there were any other reported activity we thought was connected to the Bump, it would've been there too, so I assume there isn't any. The live stream only just happened a few hours ago, and the factory is abandoned, so probably nobody has been there since, I would guess. As for if the Bump is hiding anything, well, that's what we're going there to find out," Chuck answered where he could, and gave a shrug.

. . . "Oh. JUST the livesteam? And it's new. I still think we have to find the witnesses!"

She seems to head back to where Zoya is and is now reading the file AGAIN!

"Spider does that sometimes! You know, you could have asked the right person."
