I wonder how much of it is the result of rumors of the Queen's secret death making them consider it as good of a time as any to do so.
Having a monarchy in a democracy is already weird. Having a monarch who might visit your country every few years is even weirder. Honestly, I don't know how any country would put up with this.

Actually no, several Commonwealth countries are republics, the requirement to keep the British monarchy was dropped a while ago. There are even members who were never part of the British Empire.
