Ah, the supernatural academy. A staple of the secret supernatural world. You get all of the character interaction of a mundane school setting while also easily fleshing out your world. It's not hard to see why this trope, along with the related superhero academy, is so prevalent.

This is...sort of that?

At some point in the early 2010s, in an otherwise unremarkable town in Massachusetts by the name of Little Haven, an otherwise unremarkable guidance counselor by the name of Ms. Sims starts looking into supernatural events. Slowly, over the course of several years, she becomes absolutely convinced that there's a secret supernatural world parallel to our own, and everyone she knows becomes equally convinced that she has gone crazy.

At some point, Ms. Sims has the ingenious idea that if such a world exists, they must need a school!note  She had grandiose visions of Oddity High, a huge school with many classrooms, teaching both classes you'd find at a traditional school and classes teaching the kids how to use their weird powers, and her as the principal.

Through a combination of inherited wealth, a few connections, and dumb luck, by 2018 Ms. Sims managed to get Oddity High running and recognized as an official school, but it was far from what she had pictured. She'd been unable to find anyone who wanted to teach the "controlling your powers" class, or indeed anyone besides a single set of teachers of the four core subjects, only a measly twelve* students expressed interest in applying, and they were limited to the third floor of a tiny three-floor office buildingnote . She decided she would just have the students cycle through each teacher for the first half of the day, do a power control thing herself during lunch, and after lunch they'd just go home.

Worse, the four teachers she did get didn't even believe her: Mr. Morgan, the math teacher, joined because he was new, wanted to practice a bit before getting a job at a real school, and didn't mind the weird kids this would probably attract; Ms. Hughes, the English teacher, joined because her teaching reputation was so horrible that this was literally the only place that would hire her; Ms. Perlman, the science teacher, joined because she wanted to convince the kids that whatever event led them to believe they were supernatural had a perfectly scientific explanation; and Mr. Davis, the history teacher, basically went "screw it, why not?".

Unsurprisingly, Ms. Sims was wrong in her belief of a secret supernatural world. Unsurprisingly from a meta perspective, she was not wrong in her belief in the supernatural. It was the "world" part she was wrong about; all the supernatural things in Little Haven are disconnected events that manage to stay out of the public eye on their own. At least, they have been up to this point...

A while ago, I started an RP. It died, partially due to a general sense of apathy that I started feeling around that time and partially due to the fact that almost half the cast were GMPCs. This was a stupid idea, and I acknowledge that it was a stupid idea, and I apologize to the guy who pointed out it was a stupid idea and who I brushed off.

However, multiple people expressed interest after it already fell through, and the people that did sign up had some very solid character ideas, so I think it's time to give this another shot! If you were in the first run, feel free to do the same character again.

You will be role playing as teenagers with supernatural powers attending a school, supposedly for the supernatural, where none of the teachers actually believe in the supernatural. The signup sheet is formatted like so:

  • Name: Their name.
  • Age: Their age, should be in high school range.
  • Appearance: What do they look like? Do a fair bit of description. (There's a bit of a caveat to this, which is explained under Power/Oddity.)
  • Personality: Who are they, as a person? Again, be descriptive.
  • Power/Oddity: This is the fun part. What's their power, or if it's something other than a power, what's special about them? There's no sort of theme I'm going for. I'll accept a guy with magnetic powers, the daughter of an obscure Norse deity, and a blob monster in a hoodie, mask, and gloves all the same. You can even make a character with no powers that just owns an item with supernatural properties. The only caveat is that they have to be, or at least appear, human, at least at first. The teachers should think "oh, these are just normal students" for the first few minutes. (If they have multiple forms, the human form must be the default one.)
  • Backstory (optional): Where did they and/or their powers come from? Do their parents know? Do they even have parents?
  • "Why did you decide to join the school?": Answer this in character. (Keep in mind the founder/principal is seen as a crackpot by this point.)
The RP is going to be lighter in tone; while it won't be outright comedic, it's not dark, either, so keep that in mind while writing (although I'm not going to straight-up reject a character for having too tragic a backstory).

*I might up this to sixteen if enough people sign up. I will also let future students join the school on days after the first, so don't worry about having to wait super long or getting there too late and being locked out.

Time to reboot the token powerless kid.

  • Name: Blake Smith
  • Age: 15
  • Appearance: Blake's a little short for his age and is lean in build. Between the hazel eyes and short and messy brown hair he's almost the archetypal image of a happy early teen. His usual outfit consists of an array of different pairs of jeans and shirts; solid colors each with a different symbol that aren't quite corporate logos but definitely have the same energy.
  • Personality: Blake puts his best effort into being a bright and upbeat teen with a love for music and hanging out with friends. However he also tends to get sleepy sometimes and his sudden relocation from New York to Little Haven with little to no explanation as to why has given him a little simmering resentment that might explain why he's so cavalier with 'borrowing' random objects that catch his eye around the house.
  • Power/Oddity:
    • He is not (personally) responsible for the series of clerical errors that led to his acceptance at the school. His mother and the organization she works for is.
    • He has a minor medical fatigue issue that was being exacerbated by living in New York. While his parents hold many theories as to the source, ultimately it seems to be a mundane issue.
    • His parents work for the government. Specifically the joint HHS and DHS Center For Human Idea-space Management: an agency dedicated to the health of the collective subconscious and the threats and anomalous items that derive from it.
    • His imaginary friend has proven rather persistent.
  • Backstory (optional): If there were secrets in Blake's childhood, then no one had let him in on them. Born to what felt like a loving couple in New York, the boy had most of the typical childhood for urban kids with government employee parents: A decent grade school, a small cadre of friends in the neighbourhood, the occasional doctor's visit that involved assorted tests, being brought along to fancy dinners with the parents and of course just hanging out amid the alleys and the city ambiance. And then, in a moment, his world was turned upside down; pulled out of school, given one last medical check and then taken several states over by his mother to move to a sleepy little town named Little Haven. Whatever secret meant he had been split from half his family and all of his friends, no one had let him in on it.
  • "Why did you decide to join the school?": "Mom was insistent, guess she doesn't really want me attending a proper school because of my condition."

It's clearly a case of backroom political albumizing.

  • Name: Kayden Verity aka ‘Kaimah’
  • Age: 14, physically 17 in his other form
  • Appearance: Usually something like this. His other form, however, looks closer to this
  • Personality: A rough-and-tumble kid, who loves playing pranks, exploring old abandoned spots and seeing how far he can fling rocks from a high place. Used to be a bit of a lecherous kid, but for a number of reasons he’s moving on from that. Tries to come off as a cool tough guy, but in a lot of ways, he’s still trying to figure out if he wants to stay a boy or become a man. Now he’s got a state of being none of those things, and he’s already getting sick of it. He hates switching to a weird body, being stuck with an outfit all frou-frou and glittery, and resents being exploited for his new powers, especially if they’re used against him. With that said, his other side has its perks. For one thing, following wishes to the letter opens up the possibility for all kinds of mischief.
  • Power/Oddity:
    • Djinniri Form: By taking his magic brass ring and giving the jewel at the end a twist, Kayden is transformed into his alternate form, which he’s taken to calling “Kaimah, the Genie of the Ring”. By default, this form is based on the boy's original concept of an ideal genie- gender, outfit and all. Roughly ten percent of it is actual physical matter, the rest may as well just be a hologram. When granting wishes, his eyes glow the colour of the magic he’s tapping into. He can change back again just by willing it, but it’s only in this form that he’s able to use his other powers.
    • Wish Granting: For now, Kayden is compelled to grant the wishes of those around him while he’s in his other form, and struggles to use his magic for any other reason. Kayden gets a splitting headache if he doesn’t obey said wishes to the letter, though the spirit of the wish is a little more flexible. In theory, there’s no limit to the wishes he can grant someone, but there are naturally some provisos. For a start, he only has to grant one wish from the wisher at a time. They’ll then have to wait their turn until someone else makes a wish. For another thing, Kayden’s capacity to grant wishes is fairly limited, at least for now. Using his magic is like exercising a muscle, and not always the same muscle at that. Bringing something to life takes a different kind of magic than killing something, and teleporting objects requires much less effort and focus than creating them out of the air. Kayden has the option of tapping out of wishes that cause too much mental and physical strain, resigning them to a ‘wish list’ for fulfilling later, because the more he practices his magic spells, the easier they become.
    • Mystic Database: Oftentimes, when granting a wish means needing to find or learn something, Kayden finds himself viewing a kind of telepathic touchscreen database of text and images that only he can see. For all intents and purposes, it carries the sum total of all learnable knowledge, right down to the number of dust motes in a ninety-mile radius, but with there being only so much a mortal mind can handle, only the most directly relevant information to a wish is ever called upon. Time slows a crawl just long enough for Kayden to digest whatever bit of information he needs.
    • Plane Shifting: Kayden has discovered that certain wishes allow him to access a parallel dimension, which for now he calls the Unseen Realm. This misty world reflects the real world by almost all appearances, but here, living thinking beings are reflected as strange, spiritual, exaggerated versions of themselves. What’s more, they constantly speak what seems to be their counterpart’s internal monologue, no matter how nasty, while what their real self is speaking is reduced to a distant echo. While in this realm, Kayden becomes completely invisible to those on the physical plane, though he often stirs up a breeze or a minor whirlwind when he moves. He finds himself strangely formless in this plane, and can fly through the air at potentially dizzying speeds. He can even shift part of himself into this realm, with green smoke issuing from the stump left behind, allowing him to reach across the room or float in the air without completely vanishing. Any telekinesis he performs is actually him moving many intangible limbs in this realm. Also, he has the potential to whisper in the ear of the spirit counterparts- or Qareens as they’re officially called -to influence the other person’s thoughts. He may even be able to fully possess someone already suffering from a mental weakness or deep insecurity.
  • Backstory (optional):
    • For the first thirteen-and-a-half years of existence, Kayden lead an average life. Suffering through school boredom, playing out in the woods, bickering with the little sister half his age, all the usual stuff. The boy had a healthy imagination, and an enduring love of fantasy and adventure stories. Some of his favourite stories growing up were about wishes being granted, whether from shooting stars, wishing wells, fairy godmothers or, of course, genies. Kayden longed for the day when he’d find a magic bottle or lamp and meet a real life genie, and clung to the idea for years. Of course, as he reached his hormone-addled years, those aspirations became about finding a beautiful buxom genie, looking a lot like that clique of high-school girls up the street, only in bellydancer outfits.
    • On spring break of that year, partly inspired by Kayden’s ambition, his family went on vacation to Dubai. They had a lovely time, with plenty of sightseeing, sunbathing, water parks and room service, but finding a genie and going on Arabian Nights adventure was ever on Kayden’s mind. One day, on a trip to Ras el Kaimah, they stopped by a marketplace to pick up some souvenirs. Little Sally got a Pikachu pen, and Kayden got a pretty cool looking oil lamp, which should have kept his imagination going for days. But then, out the corner of his eye, something glinted at Kayden, as if calling to him without words. Like a fish on a hook he was reeled towards the side of the dirt road, and there he found an old brass ring, that looked like it had been valuable once upon a time. Kayden took it, strangely enraptured, and carried it back to the hotel room, prompting the usual ‘You don’t know where it’s been’ speech when his parents found out. But Kayden remembered how Aladdin’s lamp had looked like a worthless piece of junk at first, so instead of throwing it out, he began twisting it, turning it, rubbing it fervently to get to the treasure inside. Then suddenly, a burst of light! A puff of glittering smoke, a glow of gold, a swirl of icy mist circling around him as thunder boomed outside on what should have been a cloudless evening. Before he could cry for help, Kayden was caught in a light show that Disney animators would have taken notes on for years to come, as his very bones flashed and he began to shift and grow in places he didn’t even know he had. When the lights stopped flashing and the dust had settled, Kayden blinked his eyes open to find himself three years older and very much female.
    • All of this was in full view of the rest of his family. Sally was pretty much the only one who didn’t quickly start panicking in some way or another, at least not until everyone was jabbering over each other. Once things were quiet enough, the Dad suggested Kayden tried rubbing the ring again to change himself back. Instead, a vision was projected, taking up half the room, of a bearded middle-aged man in a keffiyeh and an office flooded with books. This was Professor Hisoka Iskandar, a researcher at the Arab Gulf States Folklore Centre, who had left this message to tell whoever found it that they had indeed become a djinni or djinniri. After years of research, Prof. Iskandar had discovered the existence of djinn, even the stereotypical wish-granting ones, but had found these particular djinn were critically endangered. As mortals made more and more outlandish reality-warping wishes over the centuries, djinn sealed in objects had drawn on the magic and life-force of their peers to keep up. Those in lamps were strong enough to thrive, those in jars mostly weathered the storm, those in bottles hung by a thread, but those in rings were all but extinct. Holding the greed of man responsible, Iskandar took it upon himself to enchant the now-dead rings to turn the true believers into new djinn, in a bid to restore balance to the magical world. The Verity family, however, didn’t hold with any of this. Testing Kayden’s new powers, they tried everything to turn him back to normal, but one rub of the ring always changed him again. The most they could do was to wish it so that he could go turn into his old self any time he wanted.
    • The next half a semester was perhaps the tensest of Kayden’s life. The option of becoming a ‘hot girl’ whenever he liked was exciting for a while, but the novelty soon wore thin, especially with his Mom deciding to give him makeup lessons. He strained to keep his new powers a secret from his friends, and ultimately wound up drifting apart from them. He tried to use his new form to get close with those girls up the street he was crushing on, only to find out they weren’t the kind of people you’d ever want for friends. His parents kept trying to get hold of Prof. Iskandar, but he proved harder to track down than Carmen Sandiego. Settling into the new normal meant exercising his new powers, and regular headaches and family fights occurred as ground rules were set on what was and wasn’t an okay thing to wish for. There were some silver linings along the way, of course. For example, Kayden’s relationship with his sister had taken a turn for the better, even if she was now constantly asking him to switch to ‘big girl’ form. Then during the summer, there came a real bombshell- a supernatural school starting up, right there in Massachusetts. Debate raged in the household for a while. After all, it could’ve just been a big scam, and there were half a dozen high schools that would’ve been better for Kayden…at least, better for the person he used to be. In the end, the decision was made, and after his 14th birthday, Kayden was enrolled at Oddity High, at least for now, and left the life he knew at Little Haven Middle School far behind.
  • "Why did you decide to join the school?": “Well…what the hell do you think? I hate lying to people about this stuff, and I hate the fact that I’m constantly hiding this part of me AND I hate the fact that I barely know what the helling hell I am to begin with, y’know? So, I figured, y’know, maybe if I went here, I could find some people that’re like me. Someone who’d understand, maybe…help me get a hold of this thing. Hell, the principal’s a big supernatural buff, right? Maybe she’s friends with the Professor. Maybe she’ll introduce me, and I can finally give that dumbass a piece of my mind.”

  • Name: Iris Langley
  • Age: 14
  • Appearance: Barely 5 feet tall. Her eyes can appear on any surface she's touching, as well as anywhere on her body, and tend to shift around and wander without her input when she's not paying attention. However, with the benefit of baggy, concealing clothes, sunglasses that can disguise the fact that the eyes on her face don't always want to stay put, and enough concentration to keep eyes from opening where they shouldn't, she can pull off a relatively normal appearance.
  • Personality: A largely sheltered upbringing has left Iris with little in the way of social skills, or confidence when it comes to talking with new people. In addition, Iris has spent most of her life considering herself a freak, and as a result, she's slow to open up to people. However, beneath her shy and closed-off exterior, Iris has possessive tendencies and a violent and terrifying temper, which is most easily triggered by threatening something or someone that she considers hers.
  • Power/Oddity:
    • She of the Infinite Eyes: Iris possesses a seemingly infinite number of eyes that appear and disappear from her body and surfaces she's touching with little rhyme or reason, and shift across her skin and other surfaces of their own accord. With a bit of focus, however, she can control where her eyes appear and how they move, at least enough to hide them under her clothes when she needs to. Iris's eyes can be damaged or even destroyed, and Iris will feel the associated pain, but new eyes will quickly appear to take their place.
    • Absolute Sight: Iris's eyes are not normal eyes, and are capable of seeing through most surfaces, seeing in the dark, penetrating illusions, and "zooming in" on faraway or small objects. Combined with the placement of her eyes all over her body, this affords her nearly perfect 360 degree vision.
  • Backstory: Iris was born to the wealthy Langley family, a clan with a storied past and something inhuman in their bloodline. By pure chance, the Langley family's bizarre lineage manifested in her. From birth, Iris has been blessed and/or cursed with her infinite eyes. She grew up unwilling to leave the house in fear of being labeled a freak, leaving her with only her family for company. It was only recently that Iris managed to assert enough control over her eyes to hide them in public, and Oddity High is her first step into education that isn't homeschooling in, well... ever.
  • Why did you decide to join the school?
    • "I.. uh... don't really wanna be around a whole lot of new people... this place is nice and small..."

  • Name: Emilia ‘Mimi’ Munroe
  • Age: 15
  • Appearance: 5' tall, on the dot. Usually dressed in pastel colours, and generally seems to brighten up her local space through sheer innocence. Despite this her eyes seem blind, and she has an odd mannerism and a fundamental sense of uncanniness that tends to get under people's skin with prolonged exposure. Her clothes seem to have a strange plastic sheen to them, as does the rest of her form.
  • Personality: Mimi is curious, cutesy, child-like in her demeanour and seemingly innocent to her very core. Almost... freakishly so, in fact, as she doesn't understand innuendo on any level and possesses a flat affect that suggests she's a few years behind in her development. All of this would be fine and good in a vacuum but the fact remains that Mimi is simply not right, and beyond simple sense of right and wrong she seems to possess no real empathy or emotions at all. Still, she's the quiet sort and a bookworm at least—she has a personality, but it's a very understated and primitive sort that's fuelled by curiosity and very little else. If she's of low or high intelligence it is frankly impossible to tell, but she displays hints on occasion of keeping secrets.
  • Power/Oddity: As one might ascertain from her image, Mimi is in fact not a human being at all. Instead she's a sentient, malleable mass of shifting fleshy material; able to reconfigure itself into almost any shape it knows well enough and even being capable of replicating solidity and complex textures to a passable extent. As such, Mimi has no internal organs or skeleton beyond what she mimics in the moment to keep up her disguise; though she can in fact digest things, just in a manner more akin to an amoeba on the inside than with a dedicated stomach. If Mimi happens to consume another creature's brain or source of consciousness, she can assimilate their knowledge and take their form and mass—though she has limited storage space and will have to format old memories to make room, that and the mass has to actually go somewhere so she'd typically end up bulkier. Otherwise she can just research things and watch how others act to attain new forms, but in a very tactile manner—she has no true senses other than touch, and so she has to ‘feel out’ vibrations to ‘hear’ and brush her hands/mass across things to ‘see’. She is skilled enough not to be considered blind, however, but in terms of outright weakness she cannot detect things not physically connected to her—locating flying things is much harder than finding other grounded creatures such as herself. Though she's immune to impalement, dismemberment, decapitation, and most purely physical attacks, she can be immolated and may react violently to certain acids and chemical substances—either to the point where she's too agonized to reform herself or is even outright killed.
  • Backstory: Mimi... can be considered an adoptee, and is emphasized as such repeatedly by the Monroe couple who have taken her in whenever they're asked about her origin. Beyond that they've little to elaborate on, and seem too traumatized to even do so—Mimi meanwhile in all her ignorance (if it is mere ignorance) being just as quiet about it as they are. But they're a happy family, with broad smiles and many teeth—too many teeth, some might say, to be truly happy. Mimi rarely smiles though, not genuinely, and not even when she was sent to school; in fact coming home dismal/inhumanly inexpressive after each day and causing her parents to decide that she simply wasn't faring well in her old school due to her... unique troubles. Upon hearing of Oddity High, Mimi's parents jumped at the chance to give their daughter a more suitable place to attend lessons, and ushered her along there with the hopes she'll learn how to smile again. Perhaps she will. Or perhaps she'll come home with an entirely new expression on her face instead.
  • “Why did you decide to join the school?”
    • “Mama and Papa decided for me! But Mimi would've come anyway, because it's very small and very weird. Mimi's a very good girl who goes to school.”

Name: Mindy Mercedes

Age: 14

Appearance: Her appearance is here and her attire consists of a white t-shirt, blue capri jeans, and blue & white running shoes. She also has a black digital watch on her left wrist. She's 5'5 and 120 lbs.

Personality: Mindy is a sarcastic and brash girl who's incredibly hot-tempered and also can be a bit whiny at times. But deep down, she's a kind individual who tries to do the right thing and shows herself to be loyal when the chips fall down.

Power/Oddity:

  • She has pyromaniac abilities that can make her start fires with a flick of a wrist. But there's a drawback to this. The madder she is, the bigger the fires she can make. So she has to be careful when she uses those abilities.

Backstory (optional): Mindy originally comes from Brooklyn, raised by a single mother when her father passed away at a very young age. There, she made a few friends she played baseball with and was known to get into fights in school. And then, she was in an accident when she was 11. A truck carrying radioactive materials crashed as she was riding her scooter to school, which made a barrel fly out and hit her, spilling the material all over her and putting her into a coma for several months. She recovered eventually, with her new powers, which has definitely caused some complications while she was in school, which ultimately resulted in her mother moving to MA so she can go to the school to help her control her powers.

"Why did you decide to join the school?": "My mom moved us out here and made me go to this stupid school. I coulda learned to control these powers, but my mom thinks it's too much for someone my age, which is all bullshit. I'm 14, I'm practically an adult, and here she is treatin' me like a little kid and takin' me away from my friends. It's so unfair. I'm not gonna like it here. I just know I'm not gonna like it here at all. My mom is so strict, ugh!"

Pen gal reboot!

  • Name: Hailey Woods
  • Age: 15
  • Appearance: A young girl of average height. She has light brown hair tied into a braid. She wears a white star-shaped hairclip. Her regular outfit consists of a T-shirt with pastel rainbow stripes, a beige artist's apron, and ankle-length jeans. She wears white socks and dark purple sneakers.
  • Personality: An artistic lass, she loves to do anything related to the arts. She often hyperfixates on what she's doing at the moment, unable to focus on anything else. Due to this, she can come off as quiet or even shy at times.
  • Power/Oddity: With a touch of a pen, she can turn things into life, from origami crafts, to her own drawings!
  • Backstory: Back when she was a young child, she loves to draw. She usually uses simple equipments, like a pencil and eraser, and draw on a sheet of paper. On her 10th birthday, her parents gave her a pen to draw with. She thought it was just a regular pen, but uses it anyways because of how much she loves pen art. One day, while using it, she accidentally made the tip of the pen touch an origami creature she made earlier, and all of a sudden.. The creature came to life! She was surprised, and told her parents about it. They didn't believe it until they saw it themselves. From then on, she, and occasionally her parents, learn more about the pen's power, and ponders how it got its power.

Using a new character, because why the heck not.

  • Name: Nicholas Myers
  • Age: 16 (technically 90 because of resurrection shenanigans)
  • Appearance: Is this a zombie? Stands at 5'7. Claims that the gray skin and white eyes are a medical condition, and fortunately for him, people have bought the excuse. Walks with a limp.
  • Personality: Quiet, lethargic, and somewhat slow on the uptake, Nicholas is very much not a people person. Despite not needing to sleep anymore, he acts like he's always tired and takes every opportunity for a nap. While he is legitimately smart and can come up with very good plans on the fly, he lacks the drive to do much other than stumble through (un)life.
  • Power/Oddity: Nicholas is...well, maybe not a zombie in the traditional sense. He's not a mindless monster, and he isn't compelled to have his classmates' flesh for a mid-afternoon snack (while he does get hungry easily, he can't tell if that's a him thing or a zombie thing). But he's definitely a walking corpse—he doesn't need to eat or sleep, he sinks to the bottom of water bodies like a stone, and checking his vitals will reveal none of them are functioning. And if he's not careful, limbs and such can be torn right off his body. Worry not, he can reattach them.
  • Backstory: The reanimation process has left large holes in Nicholas's memory, so his life is something of a mystery to him. What he does know is that he was born and grew up in the 1910's in New York, that his family moved to Little Haven when he was 10, and that he died in 1928 because of something he doesn't remember. All in all, a very uneventful life.
    • Ninety years later, a young, self-proclaimed "death witch" named Regan North found an old book purporting to be the grimoire of a long-dead witch named Lavinia la Croix. The book was mostly unintelligible, being really old, but one of the few spells he could read claimed it could raise the dead. Regan, whose impulsiveness was only matched by his genre-blindness, promptly charged off to the Little Haven graveyard and gave the spell a whirl.
    • One minute later, a disoriented, groggy, and very confused Nicholas was climbing out of the graveyard while Regan had a massive freak-out. After being calmed down and realizing that no, he had not just started the zombie apocalypse—Nicholas was the only corpse in the graveyard that was revived—Regan's curiosity came back with a vengeance and he immediately got to work studying both the grimoire and Nicholas himself. Oddity High provided the perfect opportunity to get some research in...or at least, it would if Regan's parents let him attend. As is, he's having Nicholas himself go in his stead, with standing orders to tell him about anything particularly interesting.
  • "Why did you decide to join this school?" "Well...Regan wanted to, but he couldn't, so...I'm filling in for him."

"Kept me waiting, haven’t you? Tch. No matter. Dawdle all you’d like. In the end, your defeat remains inevitable."

I expressed interest in the original version of this signup after it had already died, so here's my idea I had come up with!

  • Name: Gill
  • Age: 16
  • Appearance:
    • Gill is a handsome young man with a thin yet toned physique. He has red hair that is somewhat long, down to about his neck. His skin is pale and almost seems to glisten in sunlight as if it were wet. The most striking thing about his appearance is his eyes, which are a strange pale grey. He tends to wear rather skintight clothing on his top half, though he usually wears loose or baggy pants and usually hides his legs.
    • His tail is emerald green and sparkles like gemstones in the light. He hides his legs because in human form he has a few remnant scales on his legs. It is roughly one-and-a-half times the length of the rest of his body and has a wide light-green, slightly spiky tail fin on the end of it, along with an equally spiky dorsal fin around the midsection and two caudal fins near the tail.
  • Personality:
    • Gill has boundless curiosity and very little filter for how people "should" act. At the same time, he also has a lust for life— his primary mood is cheery and fun, friendly and sociable (which can get him into trouble when his lack of knowledge of cultural norms butts heads with him). He speaks his mind at all times, regardless of situation.
    • He is an extrovert and a social butterflyfish, with an eagerness to interact with people and ask strange questions. He wants to know everything there is to know about human society, so he'll often ask questions that seem bleedingly obvious to humans.
    • Oddly he is terrified of large bodies of water and refuses to swim. This is because he doesn't want people to find out he is a merman.
  • Power/Oddity:
    • The reason Gill avoids water is that, when fully submerged in water, he transforms back into a merman. He transforms into a human when he leaves the water.
    • Gill has the ability to speak with sea life and understand them in return, even in human form.
    • Gill has a strikingly smooth and beautiful voice, which gives him surprising charm. When he sings, those with weaker mental faculties (i.e. not PC's or important NPCs) are put under a spell. This spell compels those that listen to him to approach, stay and listen.
    • His striking grey eyes aren't just cosmetic. In exchange for the ability to become human, he traded away the color in his eyes, which stole his eye color as well as the ability to see in color. As a result, Gill is completely colorblind, only able to see in shades of black, white, and grey.
  • Backstory:
    • Unbeknownst to the people of the surface world, people live in the ocean. Beautiful half-fish, half-human people known as mermaids and mermen. Gill had always been fascinated with the surface world, but he had always been told that no human was to know the truth about the merfolk, lest they all be destroyed.
    • But Gill couldn't get his notions out of his head, and he knew more than anything that he wanted to know everything he could about the human world, even if it meant going there himself. So he tracked down the local sea witch and begged her to turn him into a human.
    • The sea witch agreed but only if he gave her "the colors in his eyes". Thinking she meant his eye color, he accepted, only for her to grant him legs in exchange for stealing his color vision. Now whenever he was in water he would be a merman, and whenever he was on land he would be a human. Luckily she also granted him pants, so he wouldn't be immediately arrested for public indecency.
    • Upon surfacing he decided the best way to learn about the human world would be to go to school. So he marched his way up to the first school he could find (an interesting looking place called Oddity High) and demanded they let him join and learn.
  • "Why did you decide to join the school?": "Because human people my age go to school! And this one looks as good as any, so why not? It looks fun and I'm gonna learn so much!"

I can still hail the Horde even though the company has shamed us. Strength and Honor even if Blizzard has neither.

I too am here to use the idea I had that only came to me after finding the previous game was already done.

  • Name: Alex Palencia.

  • Age: 15.

  • Appearance: Stands about 5'4", light skin with a slight tan, black hair that is unkempt and unevenly cut short, by his own untrained hand, and strangely vibrant orange eyes. His clothes are all clearly bought from drift stores, being old, worn, and in various stages of holes/patches; in particular, he likes t-shirts, baggy pants, a beanie, and a sleeveless denim vest that's a little big for him. (the only thing he feels particularly attached to in terms of clothing.)
    • Grows to 5'10" with black fur covering his body, his legs shifting to digitigrade, growing large claws from his feet and hands, and his skull shifting into the shape of a wolf's. In other words, a werewolf. His clothes do not magically go away or change with him, but thankfully his vest and pants always seem to survive the transformation; his t-shirts, not so much.

  • Personality: A former rebellious attitude that puts up with no authority whatsoever still lies a bit under the surface, but now Alex has been scared straight as they would say; he's mainly nervous and on edge nearly all the time, clearly terrified about what might happen. However, he's not scared of other people; no, he's scared of what he might do to them if circumstances became unlucky enough for them to be around him when... You know.
    • Unbeknownst to Alex, while in werewolf form, he has the personality of a big lovable dog that wouldn't want to hurt a fly.

  • Power/Oddity: Alex is a werewolf. Under three circumstances he transforms. One, he involuntarily transforms under the light of the full moon, of course. Two, he involuntarily transforms if either his adrenaline surges from a fight or flight response, or if he's really hungry and smells meat. (Okay, so kind of four circumstances.) Three, he could voluntarily transform by concentrating hard enough, however at least at the start of things attempting this would send him into a panic attack, and he would thus fail to transform. While in werewolf form, he becomes much faster, much stronger, and his senses sharpen incredibly, in particular his smell and hearing; even in human form, Alex has a stronger sense of smell than other people, and can hear higher frequencies of sound than other people.
    • Though completely unrelated to anything supernatural, it's also worth noting that Alex knows how to pick locks and pick pockets, and ways to try to give people chasing him the slip.

  • Backstory (optional): Alex grew up thinking he was a normal boy in a broken household, as did his mother, who raised him alone because his dad left long before Alex was even born. Alex became a rebellious, trouble-making punk; he never did want to hurt people, but he was willing to steal things and smoke cigarettes and drink some beer and such. Things only started seeming weird when he was going through puberty; about once a month, he'd sneak out like he did every night, and wake up the next morning in his room, with one of his shirts missing, and with only a vague memory of running through the woods. He thought nothing of it though. One day not long ago, he was pretty hungry, and knew there was a local butcher closed because the guy who ran the place was out on vacation. Alex picked his way in, and went to the meat cooler, finding it closed with a big metal door, and then as he caught of whiff of that raw meat... Something came over him, and he felt himself lose control completely, watching through his own eyes but not completely comprehending as he broke the door down and ripped a hanging pig inside the cooler to shreds. When he came back to and saw the aftermath of what had happened, what he had done, he became so terrified at the thought of what might have happened if there was a person there after all. Keeping it secret from his mother and everyone else, he found himself contemplating running away or committing suicide, but then, he happened to come across a pamphlet for the school...

  • "Why did you decide to join the school?": As he would say: "I need help, I need help please."
    • As his mother would say: "I don't know why he's changed lately, but I'm just glad he finally wants to go to school, even if it is this weird one. I work so hard as it is just to make ends meet; I want him to have a chance at a better life than I did."

No, Gill does not have a last name. The way I had decided it, in his society they just don't have them. I was debating putting down "Gill Gill" or "Gill Justgill" or "Gill What" or something later explaining it as him having difficulties when the school was intaking him, a sort of Who's on First type thing, but I ultimately decided that was too silly.

If you would rather he have one I could edit one in though.

You could call him "Gill Marsh" as a Lovecraft reference if you like. grin

Reminder that I'm impatient this is still open and hasn't started yet! There are three slots remaining.

(Note: I'd stay away from "turns into classic supernatural creature when condition is met" because we already have three of those, plus one guy who just always is one. Not going to reject you for submitting one though.)
