The entire point of Six is to be modern and it's also not an established franchise. Easy cut.

I do some cleanup and then I enjoy shows you probably think are cringe.

While Six is way too recent to be WSRD, I think that example could go under Totally Radical instead.

From King of the Hill

  • Were Still Relevant Dammit:
    • The MySpace-centric episode in 2008. Justified (sort of) in that most small towns in the South and Midwest United States (like Arlen, Texas) are behind the times and don't really embrace modern trends until after they've been established as commonplace elsewhere or after they've run their course and aren't popular anymore. This is due to the fact that the script was originally written in 2004 when MySpace was at its peak popularity but the episode was not made until 2008. note  And MySpace was still the largest social media platform in 2008 and only just starting its decline.
Buck Strickland: What the hell is MySpace?
      Hank: I think it's a cult.
    • An odd example occurred in the beginning of "Uncool Customer" where Peggy is found to be unaware that shopping can be done on the Internet and that cassettes have been rendered obsolete about a decade before. In this case, it was the point of the episode to show how out-of-touch and untrendy Peggy was.

The first one has always bugged me. I've tried to clean it up, but I don't think it's a valid example at all. MySpace wasn't Condemned by History yet in 2008. Facebook was starting to upstage it, but it was still the largest social media platform. If it's an example of anything, it would be Unintentional Period Piece.

The second one is specific to the character finding Technology Marches On In-Universe, rather than the show trying to be relevant.

[up]Gonna guess that the pothole was changed from Deader Than Disco, but without realizing that the original usage was probably "this stuff's old school" misuse.

Taking back a certain example I first looked at during the original wick check for the TRS...

From YMMV.Diary Of A Wimpy Kid:

  • In Cabin Fever, Greg plays a Webkinz-like game. It's very hard to get the reference if you're unfamiliar with Webkinz, which was at the height of its popularity in the mid-to-late 2000s. This can stay... in the Cabin Fever page, since it's one of the two books that got their own pages. And would fit better as Unintentional Period Piece.
  • Grandpa is shown to be a Facebook user in Old School (having accidentally CC'ed all the grandparents for what was meant to be a movie night with a friend), although Greg refers to it as the "Internet". Facebook = NOT dated reference. Also the example states that the book refers to it as just Internet and the actual scene looks more like he's using a generic dating website
  • The Meltdown has a page where one kid is seen dabbing while pretending to be a statue. Granted, it's only a one-off gag and that would probably happen even today, but still. It also mentions selfies. You can't justify YMMV examples, so I would cut. Also the selfie part that is the usual "LONG RUNNER FRANCHISES MUST PRETEND SOCIETY AND TECNOLOGY NEVER EVOLVED PAST THE YEAR THE FIRST INSTALLMENT CAME OUT" crap
  • Another criticism about the movie version of The Long Haul is that it has so many mentions and jokes about gaming conventions, memes, YouTube stars and social media. While this one is justified, it also borders on ZCE

And as a side note, from YMMV.Diary Of An Awesome Friendly Kid:

  • As the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series is a Long Runner, some minor details are clearly products of more recent late 2010/Generation Z culture. Greg references the popularity and success of superhero movies, a kid can be seen using a smartphone, Greg thinks that superheroes should be "edgy" (a word that has gained popularity in recent years), and so on. Again with the "EVERYTHING MUST BE TIMELESS AND SHOULDN'T REFER TO THINGS THAT HAPPENED AFTER THE FIRST INSTALLMENT CAME OUT" mentality that plagues most WSRD examples...

YMMV.The Addams Family 2 haves a WSRD example because there's a single line mentioning *le gasp* SOCIAL DISTANCING! How dare they mention the present instead of pretending we are still in the sixties!

YMMV.Splatoon 3

  • Were Still Relevant Dammit:
    • Among the celebrations your character can have upon winning a match, dabbing is one of them. Dabbing has seen a sharp decline in usage even before 2022.
    • NPCs during Splatfests can be seen doing the Macarena, which is a dance that's seldom been seen since the end of the Turn of the Millennium.

I don't feel strongly about those ones. Especially the Macarena dance happened long before the release of the first game and the series very much embrace the 90's fashion.

People still do the Macarena, just not as frequently. And dabbing still sees usage as a reaction emote in games. Also the game hasn't even come out yet so this feels premature.

and regardless of that splatoon's aesthetic is very deliberately Totally Radical so it's not an attempt to keep things current so much as something that fits the existing vibe they have

YMMV.Battle For Dream Island:

  • Were Still Relevant Dammit: BFB has a lot of memes, such as the dab, the B Button emoji, the Roblox death sound, etc. Thankfully, most of the memes disappeared in BFB 9 until BFB 17 and onwards, most likely due to the post split episodes' nature of having much more wacky and loose writing. The two Among Us shorts also qualify as this.

Appears to be complainy, and I feel like the sentence about the Among Us shorts is lacking on context.

Since Were Still Relevant Dammit isn't a trope anymore, I'd say remove it.

Once the dewicking is done, be sure to holler so moderators can morgue this thread along with the TRS thread. Thank you!

Also, good job on clearing out YMMV! [awesome]

(Non-hat post)

78 to go! In the meantime, should we keep the On the Tropes recap wick? The only instance of the wick is in the title.

I think we can just morgue the TRS thread if clean up is being actively done here.

As for[up], we can dewick it.

Only 8 wicks remain.

  • 3 are from Tropes That Will Never Happen and I think should stay since their peculiar state.
  • The others are like the ambiguity index, sandboxes and Administrivia.
