Welcome to The New TV Tropes Western! This is a reboot of The Great TV Tropes Western.

This thread takes place in a fantasy version of The Wild West, where all sorts of animals and creatures live alongside humans. We will play a Ragtag Bunch of Misfits who go on an adventure together. Our goal is to defeat B.O.S.S. (Bountiful Outlaw Shared Syndicate), a Nebulous Evil Organization of the most dangerous outlaws in the west, with members spread out across the world. Here you can submit your player character, as well as a B.O.S.S. member as an evil NPC, and any other major NPCs you want to establish before the thread starts.

I plan to start the thread sometime in the next few days. Have fun signing up!

Rules for signups:

1. No NSFW characters.
2. No OP characters or godmodding.
3. Keep characters at least somewhat related to The Wild West. You can use things like magic that are outside typical western tropes, but try to keep your characters grounded in the western setting in some way. For example, my villain Hamish below uses magic cards, but I still envision him as a wild west gambler. Tech should be roughly around 19th century levels, but don't sweat the historical accuracy too much.
4. You don't have to have a villain or other NPCs to join. All you need is a player character, so don't feel pressured to create NPCs unless you want to.

Player character

• Name: Ben Vuma
• Gender: Male
• Species: Vuma (puma/vulture hybrid)
• Age: 16
• Occupation: Undertaker's assistant
• Appearance: Ben is a 5'2" anthropomorphic creature with parts from both a puma and a vulture. He has the head, upper torso, arms, and tail of a puma, and the neck ruff, lower torso, legs, and wings (on his back) of a vulture. His wings are the same size as Ed's, making them comically large on his smaller body. His puma parts are light brown, and his vulture feathers are black. Ben only wears black pants, as his wings make it difficult to put on a shirt. He does have a hole in his pants for his tail, though.
• Personality: Ben is socially awkward like his brother, but not very edgy or confident like Ed's The Cowl personality. He's just trying his best.
• Backstory: Ed thought he would be an only child, but a couple years after his birth, his parents had another son, Ben. Ben always wanted to be an adventurer, but reluctantly trained as an undertaker alongside his brother. When Ed moved out, Ben went with him, mostly working as an assistant to Ed. Still, he hasn't forgotten his dream of going on an adventure.
• Skills/Weapons/Powers: Claws, flight (but only for short periods), limited wind manipulation with wings.
• Weaknesses: Low self-esteem, low physical strength, occasional clumsiness.
• Anything else you want to add: Named after Ben Schwartz for his portrayal of Sonic the Hedgehog in Sonic the Hedgehog (2020) as an excitable but insecure teen. Ben is meant to be similar in personality, so that's as good of a headcanon voice for him as any.

• Appearance: Ed is a 6-foot-tall anthropomorphic creature with parts from both a puma and a vulture. He has the head, upper torso, arms, and tail of a puma, and the neck ruff, lower torso, legs, and wings (on his back) of a vulture. His puma parts are light brown, and his vulture feathers are black. • Personality: Ed is shy and quiet in general. He's a nice guy when you get to know him, but he's not sure how to make friends. When he's fighting, though, Ed can become more of a serious The Cowl type.
• Backstory: Ed was an only child, raised by both of his parents, Rosalita and Thomas Puma. The exact story of how Ed was born half-vulture is intentionally a Noodle Incident. Ed doesn't like to talk about it. All he'll tell you is that he was born that way, and yes, Thomas was the father. Whatever you might be imagining, it's even weirder. Regardless, vultures in Ed's home town were victims of Fantastic Racism. Ed wanted to be an undertaker to help give the dead proper rest, but the townspeople were afraid a vulture undertaker would just eat the bodies. Ed's parents trained Ed in the business anyway to help him achieve his goal. When Ed grew up, he left town to start his own undertaker business in another town... and hopefully make some friends.
• Skills/Weapons/Powers: Claws, gliding, limited air manipulation with wings.
• Weaknesses: Cannot fly despite having wings (They're not big enough to support his body weight in flight), physically slow.
• Anything else you want to add: Not sure of headcanon voice yet, but he's definitely a Badass Baritone.

B.O.S.S. Member

• Name: Hamish Horatio Hogmeyer Hamilton IV
• Gender: Male
• Species: Pig
• Age: 39
• Occupation: Gambler/Outlaw
• Appearance: Hamish is a 4-foot-tall, chubby, pink Pig Man. He wears a red and gold tuxedo like this.
• Personality: Hamish has the personality of a classic Saturday morning cartoon villain, and he's darned proud of it. He's hungry for money and power. He gloats when he's winning and throws a fit when he's losing. He's also a Wicked Pretentious type.
• Backstory: Hamish was once an average joe who dreamed of being a Professional Gambler. However, he had terrible luck that caused him to lose every game he played. Hamish used what little money he had left to buy a deck of cards from a trader, so that he could practice at home. But when Hamish got home, he discovered that the cards were magical. They formed an unbreakable psychic connection with him, giving him incredible luck and the ability to wield the cards as magic weapons. Hamish decided to use his new powers for crime, committing several robberies until B.O.S.S noticed him and allowed him to join. However, some people argue about whether Hamish is truly skilled at using the magic cards, or if his successes are all just luck.
• Skills/Weapons/Powers: Gambling skills, magic cards with different functions (can be used as projectiles, portals, and magic shields), near-invulnerability to things that would kill most people. (I know this sounds like a big power to give him, but it's based on his inspiration - see last bullet - and I think it will be balanced out by his sheer incompetence as a villain.)
• Weaknesses: Goofy and bumbling in general. Very prone to Bond Villain Stupidity and similar behaviors, to the point that most BOSS members hardly take him seriously. May be a Not-So-Harmless Villain later on, though.
• Anything else you want to add: Headcanon voice: Toon Ganon. He's an expy of this version of Ganon and similar cartoon villains.

• Gender: Female
• Species: A Hypsilophodon-esque dino
• Appearance: See here; about 6'1''
• Age: 26
• Occupation: Musician
• Skills/Weapons/Powers: Sharpshooting, Super-Speed, her guitar in a pinch
• Weaknesses: Not particularly durable.
• Anything else you want to add: She would have a personal beef with BOSS due to her twin sister (named Hilda) going missing during a raid by members of BOSS on her home town. She is currently in search for both her sister and the specific members who raided her town. She's normally fairly out-going and has a great love for music, but having little luck in finding her sister so far has left her currently feeling rather hopeless and having trouble focusing on her music.

Oh, also appearance is another thing I would've included, if I were GM. I don't really have any idea what your character looks like, and only sort of what your B.O.S.S. member does. No idea what kablammin45's character looks like either. EDIT: And age, too.

Anyway, I'm gonna start working on my sheets shortly, and will hopefully be done in just a while.

• Occupation: Cowgirl
• Personality: An outgoing lass who wants nothing more than to help anyone in need.
• Backstory: She was raised in a fairly normal family. Her parents were herders who helps out the community a lot. When she said she wanted to be a cowgirl at age 13, her parents were quite concerned. They both knew she was quite weak and ridiculously clumsy. After a while, her parents reluctantly allowed her to do so, though it wasn't until recently, on her 17th birthday, that she can do the job without any of her parents' supervision.
• Skills/Weapons/Powers: Lassoing and herding. Has a lasso and a slicker (which is more of an equipment than anything, honestly). Doesn't exactly have powers as she's just a regular human.
• Weaknesses: Very, very clumsy at times; She's also rather physically weak.
• Anything else you want to add:

Alright, here we go. I tried not to make it too long, but I was inspired and wanted to be thorough.

Player character

• Name: Kason Volena.

• Gender: Male.

• Species: Wood elf.

• Age: About 27.

• Occupation: Monster hunter. (Think like a Van Helsing sort of kind.)

• Appearance: Would stand about 5'7", but has boots that add a little and a hat which adds a few inches. His skin is tanned with a brown-yellowish hue, his eyes are a deep green, and his short hair is a very light brown. Looks his age, and usually wears an outfit much like this fellow, but with a double barrel shotgun instead of a sword.

• Personality: They say that monster hunters come from a certain breed; men of tough grit and cold demeanor, usually driven into the profession for some kind of vengeance or redemption. Kason is pretty much the exact opposite however, as he is cheery and friendly and loves to have fun. He's no less determined to keep people safe from dangerous things which would go bump in the night however, and nothing makes him more mad than seeing someone who can't defend themselves getting hurt. (And you know, making some money in the process would be nice too.)

• Back Story: Kason is among the first generation of a new kind of monster hunters; those who volunteered into the profession after hearing the overly dramatized and glorifying tales of monster hunters told in the big cities. He is the son of two clerks, and was born in one of said big cities, but despite his soft upbringing he managed to learn the monster hunter trade and has been doing it since he was 22, with moderate success.

Now, why would a monster hunter want to go against B.O.S.S.? Well, around a year ago, he was hired by a doctor to come to a small town threatened by a large bear monster. Oddly, the doctor wanted Kason to capture the bear monster rather than kill it or drive it away. With much difficulty, Kason did, but it was only after capturing the monster that the doctor revealed his true intentions. He didn't want to get rid of the monster; he wanted to use the monster's blood in an experiment on the townsfolk, intending to hybridize them with the monster to make them stronger, believing that this was for the best for everyone in the long run. Horrified, Kason put the monster down, and warned the townsfolk before trying to catch the doctor, but unfortunately the doctor got away. Kason has been after the doctor ever since, and has learned that the doctor has fallen in with B.O.S.S. for funds, resources, and test "volunteers" in exchange for him helping their endeavors with his various "experiments". So, Kason is working against B.O.S.S. because he fears what could become of the doctor's experiments if he isn't stopped.

• Skills/Weapons/Powers: Kason's profession relies on him having a number of different skills; riding, tracking, shooting, some magic for dark spirits that don't much care about bullets and help with other monsters that are just particularly tough, how to place wards to help keep monsters at bay, knowledge about lots of different types of monsters so he knows what he's dealing with, and perhaps most important, how to run away really fast, are all things he can do. He's not especially great at any of them, but he has experience and is no amateur, either. Oh, and of course, he has a double barrel shotgun to use, prizing it for its versatility and stopping power.
  • Perhaps his most prominent trick up his sleeve is a special lantern he carries: A wisp lantern that naturally draws in said tiny, faintly glowing spirits to inhabit it. It provides a source of light that therefore requires no fuel, albeit it is somewhat dim and with flickering colors. However, that's just a secondary benefit to why he has it, which is so that he can cast a little spell that brings one of the wisps to his hand for him to then place into an object, providing a short term enchantment to it, (usually just one use of the given item) before the wisp will leave it again and usually end up wandering back to the lantern. He most often uses this to imbue one of his shotgun shells for a special effect.
  • "Summonitores Ignis" brings him a red fire wisp, making the enchanted item red hot. This makes his shotgun shells usually set what they hit on fire, however since it also makes the shell itself red hot, he has to fire quickly after putting it in or else the shot would go off on its own in just a few seconds at most.
  • "Summonitores Aqua" brings him a blue water wisp, making the enchanted item drip water and become less solid. When used on his shotgun shells, it makes the shotgun erupt a wide blast of water from the barrel when fired, with enough force to knock down a grown man. (It doesn't knock himself back in spite of Newton's third law of motion, because magic.) However, it ruins the shell in the process, forcing Kason to have to extract it by hand when he reloads, effectively slowing his reload.
  • "Summonitores Terra" brings him a green earth wisp, making the enchanted item heavier and more firm. When used on his shotgun shells, it provides them with far greater stopping power on impact, but also reduces its effective range.
  • "Summonitores Aer" brings him a yellow air wisp, making the enchanted item lighter and more easily moved. When used on his shotgun shells, it makes the pellets fly much faster, greatly increasing its effective range and accuracy, but somewhat reducing its stopping power on impact.

• Weaknesses: Also given Kason's profession, he's much more used to fighting one opponent at a time, and is also used to fighting opponents that don't shoot back. Or at least, don't shoot back with bullets.

• Anything else you want to add: Other than his shotgun and lantern, his only notable items are two notebooks, (one filled with information on monsters, the other with his jotted down notes on the Doctor and B.O.S.S.) a pen, and papers he uses to message his sweetheart, and a small picture of her.

NPC

• Name: Emma-lee Sinno.

• Gender: Female.

• Species: Sea elf.

• Age: 26.

• Occupation: Clerk.

• Appearance: Stands about 5'3". She has a dull blue skin color and long, dark blue hair that she keeps down and straight; her eyes are a dull yellow. She usually wears long skirt dresses. She looks her age.

• Personality: She's rather meek and shy normally, but when it comes to the things she really cares about, she's rather stubborn and won't put up with people walking over her. It just so happens the thing she cares about most is Kason.

• Back Story: She and Kason are childhood friends that turned into teenage sweethearts. After Kason took up his profession of monster hunting, he tried to convince her that it would be best to break it off. Having her along on his dangerous job was out of the question, and Kason was worried about the reality that any job could be his last, and didn't want to put Emma through that kind of loss, but she wasn't having it. So they keep in touch by letter now.

• Skills/Weapons/Powers: She's a clerk.

• Weaknesses: ... She's a clerk.

• Anything else you want to add: She still lives in a big city so she's not likely to actually become relevant in the game. This is just to establish that she exists.

B.O.S.S. member

• Name: Dr. Vittorio Armani.

• Gender: Male.

• Species: Coyote.

• Age: Somewhere in his early forties, but doesn't look that way. (See appearance.)

• Occupation: Doctor.

• Appearance: Stands at 3'11". His fur is a dull orange, and his eyes are a brighter orange. He's usually wearing a dull tan outfit with a gray work apron, pockets filled with various tools and implements. In spite of his age, he actually looks more youthful, and one would probably guess that he's in his late twenties at most by his appearance.

• Personality: He's enthusiastic and absolutely mad about his decided purpose, convinced that he is ultimately in the right for the greater good.

• Back Story: I'm gonna let this be more of an enigma. Just that he was once an accomplished doctor and became obsessed with crossing people with monsters.

• Skills/Weapons/Powers: He's a doctor, so he can help those who are sick or injured, but mainly he wants to create a breed of people crossed with monsters and/or dark spirits to make them harder, better, faster, and stronger. He doesn't care much if his experiments are stable; even the most volatile failure can still give him data to learn from. He can also run real fast and is generally a very slippery escape artist.

• Weaknesses: He can't really stand up in a direct fight himself.

• Anything else you want to add: While he's very much so the Mad Scientist trope, he speaks with an Italian accent, rather than a German one.

• Name: Daniel Browne
• Gender: Male
• Species: Humanoid demon
• Age: 37-200, depending on year
• Occupation: hitman/odd jobs
• Appearance: Ref◊
• Personality: Daniel is snarky, sadistic, occasionally intimidating, and pretty much just a douche on the surface, but underneath all his defense mechanisms and habit of pushing others away, he does genuinely care for those who manage to get on his good side, and will put himself in danger for them in an instant under the guise of 'having nothing better to do' or something equally tsundere.
• Backstory: Born in Boston, Daniel was quickly realized as a troubled individual. In his teens, he could usually be found thieving or pummelling someone into the ground long after the fight would be considered 'over'. As he aged, he only got worse, having killed several times by 20 and becoming a hitman and outlaw somewhere around 27. On the day of his execution, seconds before he died, Daniel mustered the power to make a pact with an ancient general of Hell, granting him conditional immortality for a price to be named in the future. After that point, Daniel became much more reckless, and eventually, he started committing many of his crimes in broad daylight. After years of nightmares and mental torment, Daniel decided he was done. Now, although he's still an outlaw and barely qualifies as even an antihero, he's looking to redeem and improve himself, hoping to get rid of his metaphorical demons and keep his literal ones at bay as long as possible.
• Skills/Weapons/Powers: Mild regeneration, conditional immortality (can't die of old age or disease but can die if murdered), emotional manipulation, energy projection (similar to Green Lantern), obsidian-black carbon Damascus bowie knife with white handle and alien head charm attached to handle keychain, various sharp objects, snubnose revolver, proficient with most blades and can learn how to operate most unfamiliar weapons fairly quick, albeit usually in his own style rather than the common techniques.
• Weaknesses: Mentally unstable, distrustful, can't take anything seriously, mood swings, doesn't know when to stop in a fight, using energy projection is rather tiring if prolonged, and much less refined or powerful than, say, green lantern, having a sort of flickering/flame-like appearance rather than being a solid shape.
• Anything else you want to add: If any of this seems OP, just lemme know and I'll fix it! I don't really know the common level of strength/ability in this universe so I sorta just toned him down a bit and went with a safe middle-ground. Also, don't worry, I'll try to make the mental instability aspects as realistic and grounded as possible, which should be relatively simple since I'm only basing it off of my own experiences and conditions, so that way I have a first-hand view of how it works and I'm not just writing my assumptions about a condition I don't even know anything about (because if you couldn't tell, I'm very strongly opinionated about people who use mental conditions for their characters for pretty much no other purpose than 'cus they can').

I know my character isnt such a good guy, but I simply chose him because 1) I love me a redemption arc and 2) I've just always loved making characters that kinda toe the line morally. sort of a chaotic-good-with-hints-of-chaotic-neutral situation.

@Omega-Z: I'm curious, when you say "emotional manipulation" as a skill/ability, what does that mean? Like he's just good at getting under people's skin or something actually magic?

To me that's the main thing that sticks out, since messing with other player characters' emotions seems unfair if they didn't want their character feeling that way.

Here's my character so far. Note that I don't have a backstory in mind for him yet.

• Name: Bill
• Gender: Male
• Species: Hedgehog
• Occupation: Carpenter/Craftsman
• Appearance: An anthropomorphic hedgehog about 4-5 feet tall. I might draw a picture of him eventually.
• Personality: Bill is a mostly introverted, down-to-earth individual who likes his job. He can get scared somewhat easily in serious situations.
• Skills/Weapons/Powers: Good at fixing or building things provided that he has that right materials.
• Weaknesses: Not a very experienced fighter or used to handling danger.

A great Mascot Mook.

• Name: Dustdevil (Dusty for short)
• Gender: Male
• Species: Undead(?)
• Age: Old lmao
• Occupation: Mercenary
• Appearance: Neck-down, he resembles a relatively normal, if rather tall, human male, wearing a brown longcoat. Neck up, however, is a vacant black hole where his head would be, which is replaced by a floating cow skull. The eyes are blank and empty, and there is a basic cowboy hat affixed to his head via being nailed to it.
• Personality: Gruff and aggressive towards strangers, but rather protective of those he's close to. Not that he'd make it obvious (read: edgy tsundere, basically)
• Backstory: Not even he remembers.
• Skills/Weapons/Powers: He wields a very large, railroad spike firing, lever action rifle named "The Cleanser", fitted with a large knife strapped to the end. He also has the ability to conjure near infinite amounts of sand from the eyes and mouth of the cow skull, which is usually used as a form of smoke bomb that he can somehow see through. His skull can also stray independently from the rest of the body, with a range of around 5 feet in all directions.
• Weaknesses: If his head strays too far from his body, both fall to the ground, mostly motionless but able to speak/slowly crawl. He also only has about 10 spikes to feed into The Cleanser, requiring him to retrieve them after battles.
• Anything else you want to add: Dustdevil is (or would be if his head was in a normal place) about 6'8", and my headcanon voice for him would be Banshee-44 from Destiny.

Enough death. Enough life.

Is the GM supposed to approve each character before the players can join? I'm still a little unfamiliar with this subforum.

Either way, I approve all characters so far. You can join the roleplay whenever you're ready, if you haven't already.

@Dr No Puma: Yeah, traditionally the GM responds to let them know if either they're approved, or if they're not approved and why so that the player can possibly address the issue. The character being overpowered/Mary Sue-ish, the character just plain not fitting in the setting, or the character seemingly having no motivation/reason to go along with the plot/party are the main reasons someone's signup wouldn't be accepted.

You could also delegate the responsibility to others that you trust, but you'd want in mentioned in the first post somewhere who has that authority so that people won't be confused by people other than yourself making those responses.

I have decided that Edmund is a little too serious and edgy for me to play. I don't think I could play that kind of character well enough, and I also don't think I'd really want to. I'm going to make him an NPC, though I don't plan on using him after the beginning once we leave the town. My new character will be his brother, Ben. I have updated the first post to show this.

• Name: Cain Morgan
• Gender: Male
• Species: Re-animated Human
• Age: Died at 28, but is now 63
• Occupation: Bounty Hunter
• Appearance: All colors that he once had on his body have now been replaced an eerie, sickly green. His skin is also somewhat translucent, giving a clear view to his bones. Despite his age, Cain looks exactly as he did upon his death barring the ghost stuff.
• Personality: Being, y'know, dead causes one to grow quite cynical. Cain is a great example of this. He's usually rather stoic, preferring to keep in the company of other ghost-people. Problem is he can't find any other ghost-people. He's stuck in the land of the living for now, and he doesn't like it. In life he was a lawman, but the police, unsurprisingly, weren't too open to having a spectre as a cop. This led Cain to go down the path of bounty hunting. Cain is pretty loose when it comes to the people he's hunting, preferring to take them dead than alive,but he's never lost a bounty so no one minds.
• Backstory: Cain Morgan was the best lawman in the entire west. He had speed like a cheetah, smarts like a librarian and luck like a 5-leaf clover. All of that ran out when he met his match in Jeremiah Dekards. Jeremiah was seemingly just an average outlaw, so Cain went to find him solo, his pride overtaking his wisdom. What followed was a one sided slaughter where Cain was shot thirty-six times. Jeremiah walked free. Thankfully, a passing man in a caravan witnessed the shootout, using dark magic to bring Cain back from the dead. Using this second chance at life, Cain hunted down and killed his murderer before turning into the undead bounty hunter known as Dreadgun
• Skills/Weapons/Powers:
  • Undead Prowess: Requires no food or water, but still must sleep.
  • Marksmanship: A truly exceptional gunman.
  • Respawn: If slain by anything other than holy weapons, Cain will respawn an hour later at a random spot.

• Name: Dale Barnaby

• Gender: Male

• Species: Human

• Age: 42

• Occupation: Professional Gambler

• Appearance: Has a red Van-Dyke beard, with his head completely bald, hazel eyes, stands at a lanky 6'5 and weights 205 lbs. Dresses in a black top hat, green jacket, with white dress shirt and a black bow tie, with tan pants and black shoes. He has one gold tooth and a scar on the right side of his face near his chin after a fight he gotten himself into.

• Personality: He's someone who likes a little competition, always looking to play a good card game with money on the line, getting a high off the thrill of competition and he knows he's damn good at the games he plays, too. So playing a game with him can be a very risky endeavor, especially for those inexperienced as he can (and will) wipe anyone he plays clean. Despite his ruthlessness during the game, he can be quite a hospitable chap to talk too, though he can be a bit paranoid of people at times, considering some of the people he played suspect he cheats and has tried to kill him before.

• Backstory: He comes from very humble beginnings, from a very poor family who had to struggle to make end's meet. When he was 11 years old, his parents got incredibly ill and passed away, leaving Dale orphaned and fending for himself. He's done all kinds of odd jobs during his late childhood years trying to earn money and food. He eventually learned to take up piano and was the piano player at a local bar all throughout his teen years, which made him quite a bit of money from the bar and and goers that tip him. But the job ended after he had an affair with the bar owner's wife and nearly got himself killed. Shortly after, he found a new calling in playing poker for money. During his time at the tables, he quickly adapted and became one of the most well-known professional gamblers out there, becoming quite wealthy. And nowadays travels all around to play for money.

• Skills/Weapons/Powers: Is an incredibly skilled card player, not only knowing when to play or fold, but has quite the astute knowledge on how to read people. All these skills led him to the successful career he has today. Can also handle himself really well with his six-shooter revolver and always has plenty of bullets by his side. He doesn't look for trouble, but his profession has attracted lots who wanted to kill him so he had to learn damn quickly how to defend himself.

• Weaknesses: (Physical or mental) One of his biggest weaknesses he has is his impulsiveness. He always looks to make a buck playing, but has often led to trouble with him. And not just in games either. He also has the tendency to take what he wants or talk to whoever he wants, whether or not they want his company. And has gotten him into trouble as well. On a lesser extent, he can also be overconfident. While he knows how good he is, sometimes it goes to his head and it can lead him to lose big sometimes. Though fortunately for him, he tends to bounce back from any setbacks he's had.
