Mina Parker

"Xan...der...?" Mina asked tremulously, curious as to where this development would lead her. Maybe it could even lead to clues for her investigation! Nevertheless, she had to be careful. She mustn't appear too eager, and she had the perfect excuse for that already. "H-He seems n-nice. G-Greeted me when I f-first arrived and all that, b-but didn't really...really lift a f-finger to defend me from b-bullies. Tom d-did that, and now he's g-gone..."

"Father Nyczus, P-Papa, if y-you really insist on p-pairing me with Xander, th-then you must give m-me time to mourn," she continued. "I-I'm not saying that I-I won't go out with him, just that it w-would be unseemly when I'm still wearing my w-weeds. And he needs t-to be told of this arrangement as w-well. I mean—w-well—can't he be p-paired with some other respectable y-young lady? One th-that doesn't stutter, a-at that?"

Mina crossed her arms shrewdly and looked at the two men. "B-Believe me wh-when I say that Xander and I do n-not need a soap opera p-plot in our lives r-right now," the small girl said, tilting her head. "Unless h-he's also having pangs of sh-shyness and desperately n-needs a date. Then I-I could be persuaded to g-go with him."

She nodded her head sagely after that whole speech.

Jayden

For being the home of Sandfield's biggest conspiracy theorist, Jayden's house was very normal. It was a simple, two-story house with a somewhat overgrown front lawn—his mother barely had time to mow—and a roof that was brown on one side and blue on the other; an unfinished paint job that his father had started and that none of them had the skills or heart to finish.

Jayden headed up to the front door and rang the doorbell. "I'm home!" he chirped.

With a soft click, the door swung open to reveal his mother, Helen. She was tall, with moussy brown hair pulled into a bun, tired green eyes, and freckles scattered across her nose and cheeks. None of which Jayden had—the "mom genes" had been passed down to Kyle and Amy. "Hi, honey," she said, sounding as tired as she looked. "What kept you so late?"

Jayden shrugged, entering the house. "Club stuff." Which wasn't necessarily a lie. "What have you been doing?"

His mothe sighed, reaching up to pinch the bridge of her nose. "Jayden, I've told you about a thousand times, the project is classified. And no, that doesn't mean 'aliens' or 'psychics' or anything supernatural. It just means it's classified."

Exactly what you'd say to throw me off. Jayden had said that before, once. It hadn't gone over well. Instead, he made a beeline for the stairs. "Weeeeell, I've got research to do and time not spent researching is time Tom spends in some hellish dimension, so I'll just—"

Before he could make it to the stairs, his mother grabbed him by the shoulder. "No. You've been skipping dinner far too much. You're eating tonight."

"But Mom—"

"Jayden."

"I just—"

"Jayden." Her tone left little room for argument.

Jayden sighed. "Fine," he mumbled. He walked down the hallway and into the dining room, where both of his siblings were already eating. Frozen peas, as per usual. Kyle was completely quiet, not making eye contact, while Amy had her fork in one hand and her phone in the other. Jayden slid into a seat at the end of the table and started poking his peas with his fork.

His mother took a seat at the other end, and thus began a typical dinner at the Gardner household—frozen peas with a side of silence.

"Kept me waiting, haven’t you? Tch. No matter. Dawdle all you’d like. In the end, your defeat remains inevitable."

Mina's House

"Ahh yes, the poor girl!" Conrad looked over at Father Nyczus and sighed, "Her dear friend was taken...from her so soon when she was feeling close to him." Conrad looked out the window a moment, and then nodded, "I am glad to know though that you have such a possible future in mind."

Nyczus spoke up, "Well, I don't want to bother your dear little girl or the hired help much longer. I believe we have business to discuss?"

"Ahh yes, let's proceed..." Conrad turned and looked at Mina for a moment, "Be sure to be in bed at a reasonable hour, Mina, and don't make a racket. Father Nyczus and I have business to discuss."

With that both of them headed off toward the lower levels of Mina's place - namely, a place where sound was blocked off from coming out from the room...

On Heather's Way Home...

As Heather made her way back home, she would see a pair of familiar faces from the other high school around there - namely, Daniel Braddock from Coolidge High's leadership club, and Miles Lanefordt, the junior librarian from the town library. Daniel was taller and slightly stronger and with broader shoulders than Miles, who was more slender. Miles had raspberry blond hair long enough to touch the middle of his shoulders.

Daniel had short cut black hair, and it was clear he was carrying not just his own backpack, but a huge portfolio full of items related to the school leadership club.

Most likely plans for festivals, townwide events, and fundraisers.

Daniel wore a green polo shirt and jeans, while Miles wore a long sleeved black shirt and khaki pants.

Daniel, seeing Heather on her way home, waved and started to walk over. He didn't know Heather particularly well, but he still knew she was going home alone and it was getting dark out. So it behooved him to try and make sure she got home safe just in case...

"Hey, Heather! Just uhh, um, you're uh, going home alone? And it's—-" A blush came over Daniel's face. He looked to the ground, and then slightly over at Miles.

"What my friend's trying to say is that with the number of disappearances, if you'd be up for traveling in a group." Miles stepped in. It seemed sometimes Daniel was dynamite in front of a crowd such as at leadership functions, but then put him in front of one person and he sputtered out.

Mina Parker

"O-Of course, P-Papa," Mina responded, smiling and nodding like a good little girl, waiting until both men had left to take action. Both men had left in the general direction of the wine cellar staircase, which had a door that was always locked and that her father had said had been bricked off long ago by an ancestor who was a teetotaler. Mina had just enough knowledge of the house's layout—even rapping against the forbidden door to confirm that it was indeed hollow, not bricked up—to know that this was a bogus claim, but what on Earth were her Papa and Father Nyczus going to do down there?

Mina walked to the exit of the dining room, being sure to let her boots scrape audibly against the wooden floor (so that she would appear to be leaving) before taking off her boots and padding back quietly to the keyhole in the door that the two men had exited through. Mina was suddenly thankful that her family had never seen fit to change any of the locks inside the old family estate. Peering through the keyhole offered her a good view of the door to the wine cellar, which was not too far away.

Carrying her boots with her, Mina was also prepared to hide in one of the grand antique armoire inside the dining room, should either her Papa or Father Nyczus turn back. Subtlety and stealth was ostensibly her strong suit, after all, given her small size and quick wits.

Mina's House

Heading down to the old wine cellar staircase, Mina would be able to see inside that what had been stated to be an old wine cellar no longer looked quite so much like a wine cellar. It was much larger in there than she knew. Mina would be able to see some of the interior through there.

It looked like some sort of vast inlaid combination of materials pressed against the ground as some form of decoration in a manner somewhat like a carpet. Long, vast and red, decorated with a vast number of emblems and icons. Central on the main carpet-like design was some sort of black rose, visible even from Mina's spot.

She would be able to see her father and the priest talking, talking some more, and then more talking...

...and then Nyczus handed over some sort of burlap sack sealed tight, containing...something. Vaguely shaped somewhat like a statuette.

Mina Parker

God.

So her father was involved in something else, or the same thing entirely, as the gathering in the forest. Mina suddenly remembered that one of the faces she had seen in the cult meeting really could have been her father, as the robes could not quite hide his slightly portly figure that well.

She could only cover her mouth in silent shock and watch the scene unfold further. If the statue matched one of the idols she saw, then all her suspicions would be confirmed...

Heather let out a protracted but ultimately friendly "heeeeeey" as the two boys approached, slipping her phone away into her pocket and putting on a cocky smile at the pair.

"Yeah I am, Danny. Some dorks invited me out for shakes and none of them live near me so whatevs, I decided to hoof it. Normally I ain't afraid of a little string of vanishments but I'm up for getting an escort back home."

She gave a little lilting giggle and a little pose.

"Also, didn't know I had such a flusterin' effect on cute student leaders~"

Dave DuVale, Nowhere in Particular

After dropping off James, Dave had a bit of time alone in his car to think, and he definitely had some stuff to think about. Firstly, there was apparently a cult in the woods. This alone didn't bother Dave much. What bothered him was that it was those woods.

He thougt back to that day. He had woken up in the woods—those woods—with no memory of where he was or how he got there. The trek home was not pleasant; even if he didn't encounter anything out of the ordinary, the woods had a general creepy undertone to them. But the really weird thing was when he got back home. His parents seemed to think he was this nerdy kid named David. Everyone else did, too—there were even a few photos of him doing nerdy stuff like solving Rubik's cubes. He never found anyone who thought otherwise, and to this day, whenever David was brought up, he'd change the subject.

And then there was the matter of those idols. They were definitely creepy, but there was something about that second one, the winged goat lady, that resonated with him. Over the drive home he occasionally had weird thoughts about worshiping it, which he pushed into the back of his mind and ignored.

His train of thought (which had mostly been going around in circles anyway) was ended when he arrived at his house, which coincidentally was right next to the spot where Heather was talking to those other people. Recognizing her from the meeting that never happened, he offered a quick wave which she wasn't guaranteed to notice, and went into his house.

Suggested wine pairing: pinot noir.

Dave

Dave would find that the more he thought about that perverse idol, and whatever it may depict, the more vividly he would be able to picture it in his mind's eye. The closer he would imagine himself being to it. Seeing every debauched groove and detail in the construction. The lascivious lips of the goddess figure, ready to whisper something forbidden and crude into his waiting ears.

The yearning to break the taboo and openly worship such a thing that defied sensibility as opposed to the socially accepted religions. There was a scintillating detail to the darkness that threatened to draw him in.

Was this an effect of looking at the idol in such detail? Or merely shock, at seeing such a thing and thus being drawn to it in a way like watching disaster unfold...?

Heather and Coolidge High boys

Daniel gulped and took a step back, trying to make it less obvious he was really, really not used to this kind of thing. He was great with crowds and giving speeches in front of committees, he was terrible at talking to...to well, to pretty girls. "It's uh, it's no problem I guess...I'm just...well, I'm—-I'm cute???"

"What he means to say is he's glad he could be of assistance, and he's sorry he's acting like a nervous sixth grader." Miles grinned a little bit and nudged Daniel, who promptly stood back up straight and smiled. He was not having his best day and Miles knew it.

Both boys waved at Dave before continuing on their way with Heather.

Mina's House

What was more it seemed that whatever was going on in there, it was for whatever reason starting to get heated. Nyczus was presenting his opinions in a visibly cool and levelheaded manner, and almost seemed concerned. He gestured with his hand, at the statuette in the bag, and then at the wall for whatever reason.

Conrad in contrast to how he usually behaved was almost volcanic!

He was shouting and snarling and seemed utterly displeased by whatever Kellon was relaying. If Kellon was some sort of messenger, then it seemed Conrad was just one step away from outright committing the crime of killing the messenger because he apparently despised the message!

Mina Parker

Should she—

No.

She mustn't jeopardize the mission because of her feelings. She didn't even like Father Nyczus all that much. She mustn't reveal herself. She mustn't. She must go about this rationally. Breathe. In. Out. In. Out. Calm herself. Move on. Draw conclusions. Whatever was in that room, it wasn't her father. Not anymore.

Mina was reasonably concerned that the argument would spill out into the stairway that she was crouched in, and so moved to hide herself behind several leftover barrels that were stacked up next to the doorway leading to the wine cellar. She was glad, again, that she'd had the foresight to bring one of the cocktail shakers from one of the dining room cabinets with her.

With a slight effort, Mina dislodged the lid from the shaker and put the rest of the metal cup to the wall. Then she put the ear to the cup in an attempt to listen in more closely to the conversation. That she'd lost visual contact on whatever was in the bag was of no consequence. If Father Nyczus brought it here, he didn't mean to lug it all the way back. Now that she knew that the wine cellar was no longer a wine cellar, it would be child's play to sneak into it during one of her father's many, many outings, and find out exactly what it was.

Mina's House

Mina would just happen to listen in right at this point in the conversation;

Conrad shouted at full blast at Kellon Nyczus, "...And I cannot believe you would come in here and start telling me this, that after all I put into this...this shitshow, that I need to just accept this and move on. Not now. Not ever! Kellon, I took you for a friend, but your lack of will to move forward is astonishing!"

"Now listen," Kellon demurred, trying evidently to calm Conrad down, "Nothing is as bad as it seems. You're still in as good a position as ever, and you may not even need to make that bid for mayor any more. They'll just grant you all the power you need, no questions asked...now, please put that down."

Conrad glowered and turned away from Nyczus, "...Just because you say it so easily, line it up like that..."

Mina Parker

What dark sacrifices had her father made before?

What had he been planning?

And most of all, what power was he making a bid for?

With her heart pounding in her chest, Mina decided to listen for a couple more moments before she was sure that the pair were about to leave the wine cellar, eventually removing herself from her little hidey-hole and sneaking upstairs to her room, being careful not to leave any trace of her presence behind. She had gotten rather good at it, from tip-toeing around her father when he came home drunk after her mother's death.

Back in her room, Mina dealt with the footage from her drone properly, storing it securely within her computer, laptop, and several spare USBs, before erasing the other data from her drone entirely. Digging into her closet, she carefully pulled out the floor plans for her house. Despite secretly mapping the area of her family estate many times, there was still an appreciable amount of square footage that she had never been able to account for.

The wine cellar—innocently drawn up in the floor plan—contrary to her beliefs, was actually open, not bricked up like she'd thought it was...

...And her father had stared for a moment at one of the walls within the wine cellar. The gears in Mina's mind began to turn. Taking out a red crayon, she flipped the pages of the floor plan and carefully drew a crimson circle around the spot in the wall that she had seen her father look at briefly. Maybe, just maybe, there was more to the family estate than meets the eye.

Mina then stored the map away, scarcely daring to process what she had seen in the safety of her very own home.

"Hey, null sweat man. Guess you've got a lotta pressure being so high up there..."

Mina's House

After a while, it sounded like someone walked to the door of Mina's room, sounding like they were just standing there. Contemplating whether to go to the door and open it, knock, or just keep moving. There was an audible sigh, and then whoever was at the door left - leaving Mina to continue with her work.

Heather and co.

Daniel nodded, and then considered what she said, "Well, we're gonna be getting to work on a town wide athletic festival pretty soon, and if you want I could advocate for bringing you on to the planning board for it. Well, if you want..." Daniel looked over at Miles, hoping he said everything right.

Miles just shrugged and then said, "By the by, one of the students from our school was supposedly transferring over to yours due to some...difficulties. His name was Tobias, but nobody's heard anything about him."

Miles wondered briefly if he was another disappearance. Tobias last went to school...about a day before Elwood and Aaron disappeared...

Mina Parker

Mina did not pause in the process of falsifying events in her diary, scribbling away in it quite absent-mindedly, when she heard someone—her Papa, most likely—sighing outside the door. She was certain that she hadn't left anything behind to mark her presence when she was eavesdropping—after all, her boots and her equipment were all accounted for—and he didn't come in to confront her anyways.

Good.

That meant he either didn't know she was there, or thought she wouldn't be able to understand the full implications of what she had heard.

There was a small click as she opened the door to her room, going outside into the hallway to see who it was. This was a prime opportunity to grill her Papa or whoever else it was for intel, after all. Mina refused to waste it.

"H-Hello?" she asked whomever had been outside her door, more of a formality than anything. "Is s-something wr-wrong? Y-You seem pretty up-upset."

Jayden

"So I was thinking," Jayden said, breaking the long silence hanging over the table. "We all know that Tom and Elwood and Aaron disappeared, right?"

Both Kyle and Amy groaned.

"Hear me out! And I know there's definitely a relation, because why wouldn't there be, the timeframe is much too small for it to be coincidental. So—"

"Jayden," Amy said, looking up from her phone, "it's not a big conspiracy. Aaron and Elwood fucked off—"

"Language," their mother warned.

"—to who knows where and Tom's probably buried in the woods somewhere. It's not that deep."

"But you don't know that," Jayden said quickly. "You haven't got any proof that he's dead."

"You have no proof he's alive." Amy rolled her eyes. "Seriously, you're seeing things that aren't there. It's like with Cassie."

"Cassidy Blanc is definitely a freshwater mermaid, and I have proof!"

"She isn't," Kyle said. "She's on the swim team. Has been since middle school."

"I can point you to all the info about mermaids and all the evidence I've gathered and you'll quickly see—"

"That you're cuckoo?" Amy blew a strand of hair away from her face. "Yeah, we already knew that."

"I'm not crazy! I just...ARGH!" Jayden shot out of his seat, glaring at his siblings. "I'll show you! We're gonna find Tom, we're gonna interview him on what kidnapped him, and then you'll be the crazy ones!" His point made, he turned on his heel and stormed out of the dining room, slamming the door behind him.

Helen sighed, slumping in her chair. Kyle and Amy stared at the door, bewildered.

"...who's we?"

"Aww man, another kid dropped off the radar? Man, that sucks... Was he traipsing through the woods or somethin'?"

Heather took a few steps ahead and spun on her heel so she could walk backwards, maintaining the eye contact with the two others. You can probably picture the situation decently well in your head.

"Aaaaaaaaand, I'd be proud to be on the planning board. I mean sure I'm not exactly a major sports person but hey, running is a valuable skill given what's been happening recently!"

She bursts out giggling for a few moments.

Mina's House

When Mina went to go to the door however she wouldn't see anyone there. At least, nobody physically at least. She would however see a scrap of paper lying on the floor. Just a random little burnt piece of paper with something scrawled on it in cursive.

Heather and co.

"Not exactly..." Daniel had heard of the notoriety of the woods there. Officially they were the Sandon Hills Forest, but they were informally known around town due to the number of odd tree formations as the "Phantomwood Forest".

Daniel elucidated, "Well, Tobias had always been kind of the sickly type. Some kind of rare degenerative disease. Doctors said he wouldn't live past 21. He was always really...quiet. Morbid. He stayed alone and everyone left him alone. It was kind of a depressing way of going about things. Apparently though something started happening around his home, and then he got pulled out of Coolidge High, and started to be readied to transfer over. Then he just...poof. No hint of him. The transfer is supposedly still ongoing...months later. And he just happened to have all this happen so close to when Aaron and Elwood disappeared."

Miles speculated, "Well, our QB, Matthew, he...didn't exactly have the best relationship with either Aaron or Elwood. He kicked Aaron off the team for all the drug abuse, and he really didn't like how Elwood operated with the girls around town and made that known."

Miles cupped his chin and wondered. Could there be some connection...

Duane

Duane meanwhile climbed down a ladder leading down from further upstairs, groaning and looking at his arm. Patience is a virtue...geez. We're getting closer every day, but come on! "Duane!" He winced as he heard his mother shouting for him from downstairs.

"Yeah mom!?" He shouted down to her as he gripped the side of the staircase.

"Did you take care of your responsibilities?" Shrill and loud, as usual.

Duane looked at his arm, and tugged his shirt sleeve, "Yeah! I did. Kinda wish—-"

"You know it's your responsibility!"

Duane grumbled at this and went on to his room. Of course he had to take care of this, on top of everything else, on top of the search for—-for Tom. He saw he had got several texts from the others while he was dealing with his...responsibilities...and sighed. He first checked the ones from Mina.

Hey Mina, just got your message. Kinda freaky that someone's showing up like that. Do we have any more clues about what's happened to Tom?

Heather listened intently, her face scrunching up a little.

"Sounds like both our school's football teams are fulla jerks... Perhaps... Nooooo, you don't think they could be murderous jerks?"

She spun a little in place and let off a concerned little squeak. Grabbing her phone she quickly typed 'Tobias = sickness' into her notes app.

"But that doesn't explain sicky guy going away, maybe his condition got worse and no one in a position of power wants to admit that he's stone dead?"

"That...doesn't really sound like Matt. He was kind of a breath of fresh air after all the issues we had with Owen Logan...I know it's...not exactly kind to speak ill of the dead and all." Daniel said as he crossed his arms, "Aaron was...temperamental, crazy really. He could be calm one minute and throttling someone the next. And Elwood was...well, Elwood was a user. He didn't start that way, but by the time he disappeared, he was known for three things; some seriously sick bedroom requests, fucking around constantly, and some disputes with his family."

Miles only nodded in response to what Daniel said about it. He had to tell the truth always felt kind of nervous around Aaron, and rather disgusted about the way Elwood turned out. If people had been there better maybe neither would be in those circumstances.

Miles then contemplated aloud, "There...were rumors about Tobias' folks..." He sounded like he was conflicted about dignifying those rumors with repetition.

Mina Parker

Mina quickly swept the burnt note inside her room and closed the door again, looking down both sides of the hallway. It seemed that nobody had been this way at all, since there was no retreating shadow thrown into relief on the walls. That was strange. Maybe her house was haunted?

She quickly dismissed the thought—nothing had been proven about that (so far)—and examined the note, before a buzz from her phone indicated Duane had texted her. Mina thought for a little bit, before deciding to reveal everything that she had found so far in her very own home.

Kellon Nyczus—local priest for the rich—visited. Admitted to skimming donations. Had loud argument with my father about "payments" and "power." Was in wine cellar that was supposed to be bricked off. Father stared at wall where something might actually be bricked off. Nyczus brought something in a bag with him. Still in wine cellar.

She paused, and then sent a picture of the note that she had received.

Received note from unknown person. Was inside room. Saw nobody outside.

Pausing again, she sent a final, damning text.

Father might be involved with cult activities. Offers me opportunities. Will take advantage. Tom must be found.

Written on this bedraggled note was exactly one...word? Name? Identity? Whatever it was, it was written in red ink;

Zayufur

As Mina started texting back to Duane, he seemed to take a minute to answer;

He's a prosperity gospel type of preacher. It's grift all the way down, and somehow legal.

Do you think your father has all the power in this? Or Nyczus?

Be careful, Mina.

Mina Parker

Mina bit her lip as she considered her answer, eventually replying after several seconds of further careful thought.

Would not be surprised. Forward picture of note to Jayden. Will also research on my end.

With that, she made sure that her room was clear of any damning evidence that she was up to no good or poking her nose into things that she shouldn't have been, and opened up her laptop. A preliminary search of "what is Zayufur" should do.

"Oh man, I've probably heard it all already... Sickly folks too? Or were they caught up in this 'cult' BS?"

With another spin she adds 'Aaron = wrath' and 'Elwood = temptation' to her notes.

"You know anything about the other peeps who went missing bee-tee-dubs? I never really paid attention to rumors and the news always whitewashes stuff..."

It's clearly a case of backroom political albumizing.

Jayden

Jayden's room was the attic. It was small, with a sloping roof and a single window, but still rather cozy. His bed was stuffed into one corner, and a desk into another. Scattered across the desk, bed, a few shelves, and the floor were all sorts of books about the supernatural, paranormal, and altogether impossible. On sunny days, the light cast through the window gave the whole room a hazy, almost dreamlike feel.

Jayden himself was currently pacing the room, occasionally checking Mina's texts. In a single day, he'd gotten more information than he had from weeks of investigating, and he had no idea where to start. A common link between the disappearances? The cultists in the woods (he knew Mina's dad was involved with cult stuff)? The word "Zayufur"? So many threads to follow, so little time!

Well, best to start with the weirdest part: the idols. What were they? What did they represent? Jayden himself had no idea...but he knew where to start looking.

He sat down at his desk and turned on his laptop, heading to his favorite place on the Internet: Ghost House. A forum for people like him, people who believed in things like unicorns and aliens and alternate dimensions. It wasn't the biggest community, but it was friendly to newcomers and there was a lot of information.

In a few minutes, Jayden had a thread up. Now, all he had to do was wait.

Hey, so a few hours ago, my friend was flying a drone over the woods outside our hometown, and we found this clearing. There was this whole ritual circle thing there, and around the circle were several idols.

Does anybody here recognize the idols?

"Kept me waiting, haven’t you? Tch. No matter. Dawdle all you’d like. In the end, your defeat remains inevitable."
