So I've been thinking about notifiers a bit. They're incredibly important for helping editors understand what they may be doing wrong, even if a lot of editors tend to ignore them. And yet, there's a few issues with the notifier system, such as broken links, or the fact that we've apparently reached our limit for how many notifiers we can have. Nombretomado mentioned wanting to work on them to make them more efficient and stuff, so I figured, why not talk about them on their own thread, and figure out what we can fix?
Edit: Current notifiers are listed at Notifiers.

You'll need to send hollers, I won't have time for complicated things today.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard Feynmani had a suggestion for a new notifier and this seems like the best place to put it:
Your recent edit on ForWantOfANail.Live Action TV makes use of Characterization Tags. As noted in the linked article, these are not permitted to be used in articles. The usage of exclamation points in this way is unique to certain fandoms; articles should be written to be as accessible as possible to the general public. Thanks for helping to keep the wiki cool.
I like it, but I wonder if it's still enough of a problem to warrant inclusion. Thoughts?
I admit, I think I see those more on Headscratches/WMG pages than anywhere else on the wiki - and those have their own sets of issues.
here's an instance of someone using them on Film.Artemis Fowl this very day
Is it possible to have notifiers link to the specific edit they concern?
It wouldn't be possible in the notifier itself, but there is a box that can add some text at the bottom. It does not fully work with links, so when I sent a message to myself, the bottom part I added displayed as (I've tried to do it with HTML tags as well, but that simply doesn't display):
The edit, specifically, is [[https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/article_history.php?article=VideoGame.Progressbar95#edit26096362 this]].

Currently mostly inactive. An incremental game I tested: https://galaxy.click/play/176 (Gods of Incremental)I'd like to request a notifier on Justifying Edits and/or Repair Dont Respond. Possibly something like

We are already at notifier limit, though, and it's unlikely to change unless admins raise it, which is... well, also unlikely. Do you think your notifier idea is better than any of the existent ones?
Currently mostly inactive. An incremental game I tested: https://galaxy.click/play/176 (Gods of Incremental)We already have a Natter one.
Currently Working On: Incorruptible Pure PurenessBumping this. Should we have a page that outlines all the notifiers we have and what they say? Maybe also a list of "other" notifiers that don't exist, but with text that can be copy/pasted in their place?
Currently Working On: Incorruptible Pure PurenessI'd say that's a worthwhile idea.
Currently mostly inactive. An incremental game I tested: https://galaxy.click/play/176 (Gods of Incremental)It's worthwhile to at least sandbox the existing ones so that they can be alphabetically ordered and repaired. There was some discussion in this thread about the possibility of merging some messages.
Link to TRS threads in project mode here.Do we not have a notifier for edit warring?
Found this thread just to ask the same as . A similar question for "ignored edit reason" should "none" be used when trying to call the person to a discussion?
As asked by , I've listed the current notifiers at Sandbox.Issue Helper. I've noticed "test message" and "plagiarism" notifiers were added since last year, while "bowdlerizer" (not sure why, it seems useful) and "this troper" were removed. I've added the removed ones commented-out for future reference.
I think it may be useful to make an Administrivia page about notifiers in general if there's none already. I actually don't understand yet how are they different from PM with pre-made messages.

TroperWall / WikiMagic CleanupI think the YMMV notifier (for YMMV on main) and Trivia notifier (for trivia on main) should be combined into a single notifier that points to What Goes Where on the Wiki. Aside from those two, it could also cover:
- tropes listed on YMMV or trivia
- Flame Bait listed anywhere
- indexes listed as tropes

"general example" and "murky example" sound like they could be merged.
TroperWall / WikiMagic CleanupNot quite; those are both very specific issues. Murky example is better stated as an "Arguable Example".
We should be able to get rid of the weird "test" one. And I'm not sure how much use the "Thanks" one sees.
Currently Working On: Incorruptible Pure Pureness"Thanks" receives less use than it should, due to humanity's propensity to complain more than praise. It is a notifier that just says, "Hey, you did a good job and I appreciate it!"
We can only make a limited number of these notifiers, and we shouldn't really expand the list too wide anyway.
Murky (Arguable) and General shouldn't be combined, but I agree with What Goes Where (Main, YMMV, Trivia, and Flame Bait) being merged is appropriate.
Link to TRS threads in project mode here.I mean, tbh, if I'm going to thank someone for something I won't be using a stock message for it. It feels way too impersonal for something that should be personal.
Currently Working On: Incorruptible Pure PurenessI dunno if it got fixed, but whenever I used the thanks notifier the text box was always empty.
Jawbreakers on sale for 99ยขI just checked; it is indeed empty. Which sort of makes it feel even less necessary, since we already have the "none" notifier which also allows you to write a custom message.
And I still think we can cut the test message entirely.
Another one we might be able to do without is Walkthrough Mode. IDK how common of an issue it actually is compared to everything else we already have / need notifiers for.
Currently Working On: Incorruptible Pure PurenessHonestly, I think the "thanks" message might be ill-conceived. Imagine if you're someone who only edits the wiki, who doesn't use the forums. Especially if you've received notifiers before. What will receiving the "Thanks" message feel like before you open it?
SoundCloudI would just be confused more than anything.
Currently Working On: Incorruptible Pure Pureness
Really? Can you do the same for the others? Half the notifiers seem to be affected- any with a link, I guess.
