So Bad It's Horrible Cleanup

Go To

So Bad, It's Horrible is one of the more flame-bait-y parts of the site, so a cleanup thread is needed to ensure that works aren't added simply because someone doesn't like them.

If you want to list a work under this, keep the following in mind:

  • The work must have very few fans or defenders (both genuine and ironic). It should fail to appeal to any type of audience.
  • Being offensive in its subject matter isn't enough.
  • It isn't horrible just because a certain critic disliked it, though their reviews can be used as sources and citations.
  • The work should have notably poor reviews (e.g., less than 3/10 on IMDb, or single digit scores on Rotten Tomatoes)
  • Please be polite while writing and as much as possible, avoid falling into Complaining About Shows You Don't Like. Instead, focus on explaining why the work is horrible.

Should we cut the entry for Over the Edge 1999? It only talks about Owen Hart's death and Vince McMahon's decision to keep the show going, and nothing about the quality of the actual matches involved.

[up] I mean the matches were considered not great but I think most people agree that the wrestlers are not at fault and did the best with the circumstances.

[up][up] I believe the reception to the matches is considerably more So Okay, It's Average than blatantly Horrible. It can be safely cut.

Also, I think we should have a crowner regarding three matters regarding subpages that have been talked about a lot as of late.

  • Merging "Comic Strips" and "Comic Books" into a single "Comics" subpage.
  • Cutting the "Webcomics" subpage for being the SBIH black sheep that continues to violate the now long-established "no amateur works" rule.
  • Creating a "Cover Art" subpage that can be used for examples of horrible album covers, book covers, DVD covers, et cetera, and that the folder on video game cover art can be merged into.

Some of these are different issues, so should they be separate crowners?

I do some cleanup and then I enjoy shows you probably think are cringe.

Probably! I think the Comics and Webcomics issues could be covered in the same crowner since the possibility of merging all three could arise, though it's more likely that Webcomics will get cut given how many times the cleanup thread has expressed a desire to get rid of it.

Cover Art probably doesn't even need a crowner, but a formal consensus on it would be nice to have! It could be its own crowner for sure.

Belated thoughts on “Earth”: I think it violates the “anything played on the radio isn’t horrible” rule since it definitely got top 40 airplay.

Also the music video has like, 11 million likes to about 386,000 dislikes (I have an extension that shows them) and a lot of comments that are neutral to positive. I think it's Opinion Myopia and general audiences found the song okay. I think part of it is the Dancing Bear aspect of how many guest singers he got. Even the YMMV page for Lil Dicky says it's a Broken Base.

Saw that this was added on the Professional Wrestling section.

  • Revolution 2021 became remembered by many for the infamous ending of the "Exploding Barbed Wire Death Match" between Jon Moxley and Kenny Omega. The match was held on a 30-minute time limit and it was promised that the ring would explode, something that the announcers sold as a huge danger akin to the cartoonishly hyperviolent antics of 90's Japanese wrestling. Omega won with a few minutes to spare by pinfall and soon after, he and the Good Brothers handcuffed Moxley and left him in the ring to be blown up with it. Eddie Kingston ran in to try and protect Mox, but when the countdown hit zero... nothing happened except for a few sparkles and a few pyros. To make matters worse, everyone sold it: Kingston sold as if he was being burned alive and the announcers and paramedics acted as if both men were nearly killed. AEW claimed that issues with the pyro provider prevented it from being triggered properly, but in any case a lot of people said afterwards that this incident not only ruined the match, it also the entire PPV as a result.

While the ending was absolutely lambested, I'm not sure if this qualifies. The rest of the match as a whole was received pretty well (4 and a half stars on WON, and 7.6 out of 10 on cagematch), and AEW itself was quick to roll with the mistake to their benefit, Omega cutting a well recieved promo where he mocked Kingston for overreacting. Even putting that aside, I'm pretty sure this breaks Rule 1 of the page as the explosion failure was an isolated incident, not a segment.

Re cover art page: wouldn’t it make more sense to list examples under their appropriate mediums (movie posters under Film, album covers under Music, etc.)?

[up][up] Yeah I feel if the match was otherwise well received it doesn't count. There was another entry on the Horrible/WCW page I wanted to ask about:

  • The WCW International World Heavyweight Championship. This "title" was created from the ashes from WCW's ill-fated partnership with the NWA. When they broke up, the current NWA Champion Ric Flair was stripped of the title, but retained the belt since WCW actually owned it. So "WCW International", a completely fictitious subsidiary, was created and Flair was recognized as its "World Champion" (not to be confused with the actual WCW Championship, held at the time by Vader). The whole thing was a mess, and while the International title did have some top-caliber champions (Sting, Flair, Rick Rude), it was mercifully ended in 1994 with WCW World Heavyweight Champion Flair defeating WCW International World Heavyweight Champion Sting to unify the titles.note

I feel that this entry doesn't really say why it's horrible apart from being a mess. While it was odd, it doesn't strike me as "Wow this is so horrible" more so just confusing. The entry even admits that the championship had "top-caliber champions" so it wasn't like this championship was treated a joke (like the Argette and Russo examples).

[up][up]I think that makes more sense than giving cover art its own page.

[up][up][up]I agree that isn't horrible. It sounds like an Audience-Alienating Ending if anything (also definitely a Special Effects Failure, but that's beside the point).

I noticed "Fack" has an entry on Music: Songs, and while that song is infamous, I'm not sure if it's reception is negative enough to qualify. IGN did consider the song to have great production. "Hotnewhiphop" considered it to be a "cult classic". Also, the song somehow became a Tiktok trend so it has popularity there.

There's an entry on Horrible.Animated Films that kinda concerns me.

  • Disney Princess: A Christmas of Enchantment, at first, sounded very promising judging by its trailer...that is until you end up watching it for yourself anyway. A large portion consists of older Disney shorts, which don't involve any of the princesses at all, only one of which — the Melody Time segment "Once Upon a Wintertime" — is both set during Christmastime, and presented uncut (except for the title card); the feature also includes a Recut of the Silly Symphonies telling of 'Twas the Night Before Christmas, the uncensorednote  version of "The Cookie Carnival," apparently just because it has a gingerbread man, and a Pan and Scan, re-scored presentation of the Fantasia 2000 adaptation of The Steadfast Tin Soldier, apparently just because a certain Christmas legend also has a toy soldier.note  The Disney Princesses' segments include a musical sequence consisting of Stock Footage from Sleeping Beauty to the tune of "The Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairies", a watered-down version of Beauty and the Beast: The Enchanted Christmas, another musical sequence with clips of the princess' movies to the tune of a princess-themed "The 12 Days of Christmas", a short with Ariel reading an old Christmas book she starred in to the audience with the illustrations of the book instead of being actually animated, and a music video with the princesses singing a new and actually catchy song, but with horrible animation and more reused clips. You know you botched your movie up when Ariel's read-along and the princesses' new song were the highlights of this mess and the Framing Device is no better, as it also has very cheap animation and poor lip syncing... stuff that's not really expected out of Disney. (It also creates some Fridge Logic in depicting the Beast as a beast, even though at least one year has supposedly passed since The Enchanted Christmas.) Apparently, the DVD bombed so bad that the next three Disney Princess DVDs were also the very last in the lineup, with Enchanted Tales being a Troubled Production with low sales - you can check out the negative reviews on Ultimate Disney or Amazon regarding this pretty pink cash-grab.

Checked out both links at the end, and the dvdizzy.com describes it as more or less average, with some good and bad moments, while the Amazon page has 4.5 stars out of 5. Does not really sound like SBiH to me.

Yeah, I had concerns about that a while ago. Not a lot of the content seems horrible, just moreso like a lazy Compilation Movie with very little new material. But if the material from older works is decent, kids will probably like it.

The entry for Sabec's Popeye is starting to look very bloated. Should we experiment with some condensed revisions?

EDIT: Here's a draft that I just wrote up:

  • The original 1982 Popeye arcade game is a classic, notably being overseen by none other than Shigeru Miyamoto himself. The 2021 remake of the game for the Nintendo Switch by Sabec, conversely, makes the original game look like a joke. Gameplay is much like the original arcade game, only on a 3D plane, but the similarities, and the fun, stop there. There is no penalty for missing any of the items Olive Oyl throws for Popeye to catch (which also spawn infinitely, as do the cans of spinach), leaving much of the challenge to come from avoiding an increasingly faster Bluto/Brutus, vulture, and obstacles thrown by a character resembling the Sea Hag, all while you only have three lives with no way to earn more nor any checkpoints or save options. The game features a very bland, barebones presentation and the graphics look quite ugly by 2021 standards, resembling a PS1 game, with the level maps themselves (all three of them) feeling lazily thrown together and having little visual cohesion due to the game being almost entirely made up of stock Unity assets. The already poor performance and optimization is made worse by adding various weather effects as the player goes on, causing the game to become almost unplayable. All this isn't even going into the whopping $12.99 asking price for what amounts to just three levels of Popeye slowly plodding around as well as odd glitches that can result in Popeye losing a life randomly (most infamously by just suspending and then re-entering the game from the Switch menu). The game received a shipload of reviews from people gobsmacked at just how joyless and phoned-in the game felt for a game based on a fun and adventurous franchise like Popeye, such as Jim Sterling (who named it their worst game of the year), the Wiiviewr (who also called it the worst Switch game of the year), JohnRiggs (who actually got threatened with litigation from the developers for his negative review), AntDude, Angry Joe, and finally Rerez (as part of their Just Bad Games series). Its only lasting legacy would be its absolutely ludicrous death animations and being "from the creators of such classics as Calculator".

Mostly, there's a lot of unnecessary info. The prince isn't important, and the whole sentence is just repeating what we already know (except the instructions on how to recreate the glitches, which we don't need). The weather also effects aren't necessarily an issue, so I feel that can be cut. I also don't get the bit about the three maps, since that's true to the original. Finally, there's a lot of unnecessary parenthetic comments and repetition, and I don't think we need the last sentence either.

I'd like to apologize for all this.
