Gosh Nigel Piss looks 14 now. Transition be wild.

Just to clarify something, France didn’t "ban the Islamic veil in 2004" − you can still see plenty of veiled women walking around without a care. The law she’s refering to is the one banning "ostentatious religious signs" in schoolgrounds (so it only applies to minors at school). The text of the law refers to all religious signs without distinction… but the debates surrounding the law at the time almost exclusively targetted the Islamic veil (and still do), so people casually call it the "veil ban law".

France did ban the burqa in public spaces around 2016 though.

…And yeah, it’s cool to see Nigel Piss again, though his "they never had a secular enlightenment" shtick is getting a bit old. >.>

Wouldn't it affect teachers, and parents too?

It seems to come down to "they banned it, but did so in a way that it doesn't explicitly say it's banned anywhere in written law, so people can argue no such ban has happened, but none the less the state can enforce removing headcoverings from women."

[up][up] Err, yes, teachers and public service agents are bound by it too, I forgot.

Oh man, it feels like forever since the last vid. surprised I’ll watch it later, but that’s a topic I’m very interested in.

…Okay, for some reason I had completely missed her previous video from 3 months ago.

And it’s actually the more interesting one I think. The subject of trust is especially critical in understanding why the anti-covid vaccine movement was so prominent. It’s less a matter of "am I free to not get vaccinated?" and more of "can I trust these people with my body?"

Of course vaccines can’t be a matter of purely individual freedom, since a vaccine needs to be injected to as many people as possible to work, by definition. But our governments did a very poor job of changing unvaccinated people’s minds by going the guilt-shaming route. Anyone who knows the first thing about human psychology can tell that this attitude has the exact opposite effect.

Two Prime Ministers later, Abi talks about how NHS handles trans healthcare. The short answer is: badly. And lack of funding is far from the only cause.

The last part, interestingly, is about the problem she has with the very concept of "gender dysphoria" as a clinical diagnosis.

Yep. It could probably sustain a separate thread, if we want one.

[up][up][up][up] Didn’t know that was a thing. surprised

Anyway, I forgot to post her latest vid, about the "Effective Altruism" movement, whose basic tenet is "when you have to choose who to help, pick the route that will be the most effective in the long run."

Quite a fascating topic. Because of course, there’s the question of what "effective" means in an EA’s mind and how this kind of "altruism" can actually be dehumanizing in some way.

Like, should you ignore people you could help in the moment just because helping them wouldn’t be "effective" in the long run?

When multi-millionaires and above say that they will give away all their wealth at any point, that's usuaully a good sign that they are sociopathic con-men who never do.

And yes. Charity foundation by your own name is nothing but a tax evasion scam. Had always been, always will be.

If the rich REALLY want to be altruistic, they can support raising taxes for the rich people and not only allowing but also actively promote unionizing. But we all know they never do.

Yeah, in their case "effective" basically means "giving money in a way that will serve my interests at the end of the day."

"Effective" basically can be replaced with "Corporate" in this context.

Of course, that's being REALLY charitable.

New video out!

Spoilers: It’s not actually about plagiarism (the man in question isn’t even named), but rather about the social models that serve to justify discrimination against women (especially queer or of color), and how there’s nothing "natural" about them. I found the bit about Scruton especially interesting, as the guy favors a "dynamic history", i.e. he admits that he’ll rewrite history to suit his narrative… which is a bit paradoxical for a self-proclaimed "conservative". The conclusion of the "women in fascism" part was quite chilling too. "How do get turkeys to vote for Christmas? By letting them watch other turkeys get stuffed."

On another note, I don’t know what to think of Abbie taking every chance in her videos to remind us of her non-youtube work like her play or her movie. It’s a bit funny but also a bit annoying? >.< Maybe because I have a hard time believing that Nebula is as great as she presents it…

Nebula is certainly a better option than Youtube (and certainly more stable as it’s been around for less time), but it changes a video website problem into a streaming problem.
