[up]x5 I'm in Orange County. You should've had it way worse than me purely due to being by the border.

[up] I fully expected the desert areas to not have ways to adequately deal with this and be damaged, but the storm was made out to be a potential issue everywhere.

To think that I read that California was hit with a drought up until a year of two ago, with a wildfire coming from a gender reveal party nonetheless, now a flood. Wow.

I do hope the striking writers and actors are doing alright.

Dunno why this is running in German-language news media, but it is: Lake Elsinore middle schooler made to run in sweltering heat before death, family says . You'll be as shocked as I am to see that this was a black kid.

Also, I am pretty sure that you don't do PE lessons at 32+ °C air temperature, unless it's swimming in colder water or something like that.

Yeah, not inclined to believe the school's explanation. 12-year old kids normally don't die from running less than a minute.

my inner cynic thinks it was premeditated murder and that the PE teacher was just looking for a pretext and method that wouldn't get her arrested for hate crimes (compared to when a babysitter shot one of her wards dead under the sarcastic pretense of "firearm safety", the PE teacher is clearly smarter). After all death by dehydration is more subtle than bullets.

I doubt it, I think a lot of it is that PE teachers are pretty infamously nearly universally bad at gauging when something is a reasonable ask or a safe ask.

Besides, attempting to kill someone via heat stroke would be really unreliable, and if it doesn't work, you look like an incompetent dick, and if it does work, you look like a very incompetent dick who got someone killed and you're probably going to be out of a job very quickly.

Mmm, sudden death in youth sport is actually a rather common problem. Sometimes there are genetic factors that are set off under particular circumstances.

Regardless, I still don't think that one should do sports at 32+ degrees centigrade, regardless of age or clothing. Dunno about the clothes thing - that the kid was black makes me immediately think bad things when I hear "they made him run in street clothes" but OTOH I find it somewhat difficult to imagine that the clothes made that much difference.

[up] Yeah, even if we assume a best case scenario when it was a murder racist or otherwise, it is a clear case of reckless behaviour with zero regard for comfort or even safety of those under their charge. Sport in 32 degrees and running at that ? Sounds less like PE and more like a bootcamp. And likely a fictional one at that. Correct me if I'm wrong, but something is telling me that a Real-Life DrillSergeantNasty would at least be careful about something like that.

I'm going to doubt it was outright murder. I am, however, going to put my money on the teacher doing something stupid and they are not telling the full truth.

State Senate voted to approve a bill that extends unemployment benefits to striking workers.

Two important caveats are that the bill will not go into effect until January 1 of next year (so this won't affect the Hollywood strikes) and Newsom hasn't clarified if he's going to sign it (made some comment about state debt).

Huge Tustin hangar fire destroys a relic of Orange County History

Just got back home from college work only to find out this was where the smoke came from as I watched from the 55. Kinda pissed about this since I thought these blimp hangars were really neat to have not too far from Irvine.

I saw the smoke on the way to work today but wasn't sure what it was.

Such a shame. I've driven by those hangers a lot and they're a very unique feature. Didn't know about their history (or the fact they're among the largest freestanding wooden buildings in the world) until reading that article. At least one was untouched.

I wonder if intentional foul play was involved. The article mentions that the north hanger (the one that caught fire) in particular was a zoning headache or something.

I'm hearing rumors of foul play as well. Not sure if there's any merit to them, but according to CBS the county's arson unit is on the case, as well as police.

Just happened to drive by the hanger. Couldn't exactly get a good look, but the fire is out and I think most of the structure is still standing.

So I was wrong and the hanger is still slowly burning. It seems like the main issue with putting it out is that dumping a bunch of water onto the structure will disturb the asbestos and potentially cause it to enter the nearby air.

Hm. I understand why it was initially left to burn now. That's too bad about the asbestos.

Has there been any news about who started the fire? A relative who lives in Irvine says they've heard rumors that it might have been a fire that started in a homeless encampment, but I haven't seen anything to that effect reported.

Last I checked there are no leads on how the fire started. Also, I'm not sure a homeless encampment is even close enough for that.

Got to drive by hangers today. The burnt one is almost completely gone. All that's left are the two giant doors and their frames, and one door seems to be partially damaged.
