[up]x4 That is not what a vassal state means. A vassal state in its original definition is a state that offers loyalty and capital resources in return for protection and military resources from the greater power in mutual support of each other. A state basically retains internal independence, while all of its international actions are controlled by greater state. So in Medieval times, vassals would offer up their resources to the king, and the king offers them the protection of the kingdom in return, since they can call up the military might of the other vassals when needed. The human kingdom does not fit a vassal state by most understood definitions, nor do most of the magical tribes for that matter, since again, the other tribes were free in how they chose to interact with the humans, regardless of the wishes of the whatever dragon monarch was in control, at least prior to the separation and after the Dragon prince's return. Being unable to defend against being conquered does not fit any modern sociological or political definition of a vassal state. Otherwise, every state that's unable to defend an attack from the US would be considered a vassal of the US. Think of how many states that would never be able to stand up to US military might, but still defy us anyways, and by your definition are our vassals (Cuba, Venezuela, Iran, North Korea, just for examples off the top of my head)?

And that's an overly simplified version of events that removes any context of what came before. Humans have been committing genocide for a couple of centuries, and basing their their economy off of it. They had an alternative, the people they genocided were the ones providing it to them. And apparently the alternative was working well for them, because prior to Dark magic, the time period noted for remarkable growth in civilization, prosperity and culture. Sol Regem came in after a fairly large amount of time on a human scale and said stop doing the poaching and genociding, or we'll genocide you in return. That's obviously bad, because genocide should never be met with genocide and unfortunately was what happened in the end. But the phrasing makes it seem like the humans needed the genocide in order to function as their only option. That Sol Regem was being a racist genocidal ass does not do anything about how the humans were being propped up by genocide themselves and it wasn't necessary.

Simplified or not, I consider the humans innocent victims of genocide and the dragons to be evil.

The elves turned a blind eye or supported it.

Sure, but by that logic, humans are just as evil.

I don't know if I'm the only one, but I was surprised that Rayllum became canon, since I assumed that their relationship would be the same as Sabine and Ezra.

[up][up] Not sure that's true. They left things open to develop naturally from the start and from that the crew and fans saw how much chemistry Callum and Rayla had so it was just became a sure fit.

They are still together, and exploring the dynamics of their relationship and coming to understand each other and themselves has actually been one of the most interesting things about the new arc.

I'm not saying it was a bad decision. I'm saying the creators thought they were getting cancelled and decided to make Caelum and Rayla canon right away in case season 3 was the last. That didn't end up happening, and the weird breakup/makeup at the start of season 4 tells me they really weren't sure where to go with it from there (at least at the start, they've smoothed out the rockiness since then).

First image of season 6 has been released, and Soren looks delighted to be back while Corvus is probably thankful he still has his crutches.

Happened across this post on Tumblr about a fan of the show possibly harassing people with bots and was concerned it was something that we might need to look out for?

Saw a tumblr post that suggests a few things in the show might've been influenced by ElfQuest.

Anyone think that's deliberate, or just a coincidence?

Could very well be the case. On one hand examples poster gives are somehow to broad to say for sure, on other hand given tastes of creators, I woudn’t be shocked if they are fans.

They revealed some info about the pitch process and who they shopped the show around to. https://www.tumblr.com/thecartoonuniverse/746399514356842496/first-question-is-about-the-show-being-greenlit

Despite all the services bizarre decisions as of late, I can't imagine the show having as much creative freedom outside of Netflix. Though it would've been interesting to see much longer seasons.

Speaking of, apparently season 6 was initially expected to be released late last year, but Netflix decided otherwise, now both it and season 7, the final, are coming out this year.

I know this is super far down from the unicorn discussion, but there's something that really bothers me about the whole thing.

The unicorns gave the humans primal stones so they could use magic because they were heavily suffering, and then the justification for dark magic is that the humans have no magic to use themselves, AFTER they were supposedly given the stones. But, all of the staffs that the elves have, like Ibis' and the one the Sunfire elf priest had before Claudia and Viren got a hold of it, have primal stones in the middle.

Kind of makes me think maybe the elves and dragons didn't like humans having access to magic, took the stones and THEN humans have to turn to dark magic anyway.

That assumes they had access to them to begin with, they are said to be pretty rare.

It seems more like the magical races kept the primal stones to themselves from the start, with the unicorns being the only ones willing to share with humans.

And then the unicorns were slaughtered by those humans for dark magic fuel.

The lesson the rest of the races learned from that was that humans can't be trusted with any magic, primal or dark.

It probably didn't help that humans kept raiding magical lands and killing inhabitants for dark magic. And then a human king and dark mage used dark magic to kill the dragon king to avenge the queen who was killed during the previous raid.

Disgusted, but not surprised
