Explaining why the Snyder cut of Justice League (2017) does and does not exist
Years in the making, The Art of Editing and the Snowman.
Man, it’s been three years since that piece of shit movie came out.
Jason has come back to kill for Mommy.I like how he casually drops that he watched the movie 7 times.
Jenny Nicholson on twitter reacted to him summarizing the movie's plot
Dan can't stop watching Contagion.
In which Dan breaks into cooking videos.
My favorite revelation is that Dan watches Ann Reardon.
Like Dan, I definitely recommend checking out her debunking videos. They're very thorough, entertaining, and informative.
I expected he watched her the moment he mentioned the footage farm videos. Considering Dan's propensity for weird trends and people gaming Youtube's algorithm, that'd he'd follow someone debunking that should've been expected.
I love that Dan watches Chef John and Townsends. Both of whom are amazing.
Chef John is like THE Food Youtuber. He's been at it forever and he's amazing. With great dad/uncle vibes. Does everything from basic recipes to sometimes weird food experiments of various success, and he's up front when he does something he thinks was a failure.
James Townsends and Son does 18th century cooking (And some other historical videos about 18th century living). It's an amazing look at where our foods and recipes come from. The man is a font of knowledge about the 18th century and unending enthousiasm (he's rarely ever disliked anything he's cooked, despite how basic a lot of these recipes are). There's frankly no one who does anything similar that he does on Youtube.

Oh same, I think she's great and what drew me to her videos was the fact how she demonstrates just how impractical the recipes would be if actually made as stated to the last detail.
So I went and made the bannock from the episode. Turned out really well and super easy, barely an inconvenience. Going to try adding scallions and basically making scallion pancakes next.
In case anyone else wants it:
- 2 c flour
- 1 tbsp baking powder
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1/2 cup water
Rather late to this, but I've actually read the novel The Snowman is based on, and assuming you've read it you can see how a lot of elements that made at least some sense in the book are just completely botched or unfinished in the film.
For example, the mold thing was more or less a motif of sorts, used to communicate how sometimes there's a lot of bad things growing around you for a long time that you don't notice until it's too late (or at least, that's the most popular interpretation), and it isn't abandoned mid way like in the film. Where this becomes relevant is the reveal that Matthias is the killer. He wasn't actually introduced in the Snowman, but the novel before (albeit as a minor character), and more importantly, he was super close to Harry the whole time and fit the profile of the killer, but Harry never suspected him at all because he was so inconspicuous. The twist of him being the killer is actually pretty well foreshadowed and impactful.
The whole sex worker thing with Vetlesen seems like a vestige from a plotline in the book; as Dan guessed, it was originally a red herring to make Vetlesen seem guilty. They find out that Vetlesen is regularly at an illegal brothel to visit african prostitutes, which makes him seem shady as hell until Harry interrogates them eventually and finds out that despite being a sleazeball who's mostly in his profession for the money, he actually felt sorry for the prostitutes and was trying to use his medical knowledge to help them free of charge. It's part of what makes Harry suspect that Vetlesen is not the Snowman and leads him to other clues.
I'm also reading the comments of Dan's video and a lot of people seem to have gotten the idea that Harry was supposed to be the child in the opening and that his alcoholism was derived from the trauma of that initial scene, but in the novel this is very obviously not the case. Pretty terrible editing. The whole story with the mother is also completely different, I don't have a problem with adaptations making story changes if they work but this one doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

Do the flash back to the old detective actually go somewhere in the book?
Rafto (the detective's) subplot is one of the weird things about this film, because it's pretty straightforward in the novel. In the books, you get different POV's in certain chapters to reveal information that Harry doesn't know, or just cutting to a different scene to let us get inside the head of a few characters. I don't know all the changes the movie makes to this, but basically one of the earlier chapters follows Rafto trying to link together some murders that have happened in order to salvage his reputation (he was busted for being a corrupt cop, basically). It ends with him being tricked into meeting the killer and is held by him at gunpoint, where his dialogue reveals that it's someone he knows. The prose strongly suggests Rafto is killed, and since then he's reported as missing. Harry finds out about Rafto as part of the investigation and thinks he probably knew something, after some investigating he eventually finds his body stored inside a freezer in Rafto's old cabin.
The "payoff" for Rafto comes when Matthias is revealed to be the killer, you get a few small chapters that recontextualize/continue scenes that happened earlier. In one of them, it's revealed that he was Rafto's doctor and they were friends, and the murders Rafto was investigating were the Snowman murders that Matthias was committing. He thought Rafto was getting too close to the truth, so he killed him.
From what I can tell, the film cuts out part of this context and doesn't actually present the flashbacks in either the right way or the right time, so they end up feeling completely pointless because the audience has no idea why this character popped up all of a sudden or why they should care. Not to mention Val Kilmer wasn't really in shape to give a proper vocal performance which makes the character hard to take seriously.
Really, I could give multiple other examples of things that the movie changes or doesn't actually follow up on that make sense and tie together coherently in the book (like Matthias' motivation and backstory which are very different). Based on the fact that we know there's footage they didn't shoot from the script, plus the fact that the trailers showed a scene that's more faithful to the book in the trailers, makes me suspect that the original script was closer to and had more material from the book, but they were obviously unable to shoot all of it and had to scrap other stuff connected to those scenes and reshuffle the footage they did have in a way that didn't make sense.

So the guy goes missing, and in several years, no one thought of checking his home (and emptying his fridge) ?
There's probably a few details I'm not remembering, but from what I recall I don't think most people knew he had the cabin, it wasn't where he actually lived, more like a secret getaway place he went to unwind. He was also pretty unpopular so I think the implication was that the police didn't try that hard to look for him. The freezer in question was also hidden away locked in a corner of his house, I think, so it wasn't something terribly easy to find.

Take talks Flat earth now that the legal embargo by known Moon Criminal Hbomber Guy expired.
…Oh for frack’s sake, Trump has a literal religious cult dedicated to him, now? >.>
It wouldn't surprise me if every president has had a cult dedicated to him. Yes, even that one idiot that got sick and died before he could do anything.
Jason has come back to kill for Mommy. As someone who's followed the growth of Q Anon very closely (Q Anon Anonymous is an amazing podcast), Dan gives a very good sumation of the state of Q Anon as of September.
A religious doomsday cult, mind you.
One that's already been involved in many violent crimes.
And the Doomsday stuff isn't a joke either. Look up people asking Qanons what they think after the "storm" will be like. It's straight up rapture stuff.

He's got at least two cults dedicated to him, then. Because besides the Q Anon conspiracy nuttery, he has a good old-fashioned evangelical following who believes that he is God's chosen president.
While he touches upon it, I do think there's a uniquely American character to these types of conspiracy theories and the types of reactionary politics that beget them.
Honesty, yeah. A troll post on a child porn website is exactly the sort of thing that could only pick up steam in the USA. We're the only ones dumb enough to believe it.
Which is funny considering how Qanon has bloomed abroad. Australia in particular has a thriving community. Including several people close to the government
Huh. I think I got that Grizzly person in my Steam friend list.
