Hopefully we won't get any Minion esque characters in there.

[up]x2 Yeah, cause we already have the Minion esque characters in the Toads. Especially the unintelligent ones who just scream; not the cute scream like in the N64 era, but the screechy Popeye screams from the Gamecube era that is made into a meme thanks to SMG 4.

Hey I'll take the Toads over the actual minions any day. Besides we still don't know what their role will be anyway. Maybe they won't be in the movie maybe they'll be supporting characters, who knows. Do we have any idea when it'll come out though?

Illumination is doing this? Oh boy... I mean, I really liked the first two Despicable Me movies a lot (Minions was considerably less fun, but I find it more tolerable than most people I know). That said, Sing really bothers me (Tobias nails it on just how awful Buster is... and I have related issues with Mike as well, who's possibly even worse than Buster is). And I positively loathe The Secret Life of Pets, which is the answer to the question of "what if someone remade Toy Story, but with more unrelenting assholes?" (The fact that I've significantly soured on Pixar in general also means that I'm less than tolerant of someone aping their films.)

Based on what I've seen of Illumination, it seems like they do their best with bad guys, because it seems like their unapologetic good guys are sidelined or just poorly written. Thus, I have concerns about them handling a Mario movie. Now, if you were trying to sell me on them doing a Wario or Bowser movie, I'd be a bit more charitable. Heck, maybe the curve ball will be that they are making a Bowser movie, and Mario only shows up a little bit to thwart him.

Reminder: Offscreen Villainy does not count towards Complete Monster.

I would only accept that if ProtonJon gets to voice Waluigi, which will never happen because, well, it's Waluigi. tongue

I mean, it's not fair to hold it against the Toads that they just scream high-pitched nonsense. Everyone just shouts nonsense. Like 95% of voiced lines in Mario games are pure gibberish. For Mario and Luigi, it's vaguely Italian-sounding gibberish.

This is because the characters don't actually communicate through voiced lines, but through text boxes. In text, the Toads are as eloquent as everyone else. Even the minions like Goombas and Koopas are perfectly intelligible when they speak in text.

The only people who aren't generally eloquent in text are Mario and Luigi themselves, who usually communicate through gestures and the aforementioned rambling Italian-sounding gibberish.

There's a lot of people questioning why DreamWorks Animation is not producing this despite Universal owning the studio along with Illumination. Admittedly I think they would be a far better studio to produce this film instead of Illumination, and I don't think they would just push it out and let the merchandise do the money-printing like Illumination loves to do.

But here's the thing: DreamWorks, despite being owned by Universal, is still its own company (called a subsidiary) whose operations are, for the most part, independent from their parent studio and finance their own slate of films. It's operated in the same manner Disney operates Pixar, Lucasfilm and Marvel, who all only use Disney as a way of distributing their content (though Disney co-finances Pixar's work, hence why their name is on every film they've released). Illumination, on the other hand, is a division of Universal, meaning that all of its operations, financial matters, and obligations are handled by the parent company despite otherwise being a distinct part of the studio.

The meetings between Nintendo and Universal seemed to not include anyone at DreamWorks, especially Chris DeFaria who runs the Feature Animation group. Even though Chris Melendandri, who was participating in the discussions, is currently a senior advisor for DreamWorks there's no evidence that he nor anyone else talked about DreamWorks being involved in any capacity. Even if some DreamWorks staff is brought in to help produce the involvement will be very, very minimal at the least.

TL; DR: DreamWorks isn't involved in the Super Mario Bros. movie because nobody at DreamWorks was in the negotiations for the film rights. Universal was going to take part of the bill for this and didn't think they needed DreamWorks' help.

Arin Hanson's Toad would bleed everyone's ears in the theater.

Doug Walker can possibly be a Narrator or an announcer.

This is a case where having some vocal variation is a good thing. Imagine a squad of Toads with different colours, personalities and voices, and there's potential there.

Does Toadette even appear in the main games? I know she's in the spinoff games like Mario Kart and what not but I've never known her appear in a main game in the series.

So after many rumors, the Mario movie by Illumination is finally happening. Good to hear.

RE: concerns that the Mario movie will end up like The Lorax or instead just "fine" rather than "great" and/or "Oscar-worthy":

Yeah, I understand the skepticism, but if Mr. Miyamoto is smart about this (and I like to think he is), he'll do what the Charles Schultz estate did when Blue Sky Studios was making The Peanuts Movie and watch these animation studio people like a hawk.

This is an interesting point that Toadette reminded me of: would they allow Illumination to use characters that do not appear in the main line of games, like Waluiji or Daisy?

As cameos, maybe. Waluigi being a constant nuisance/troll character is too good an opportunity to pass up. Maybe a sequel though.

[up]Toadette does appear in Treasure Tracker, which is connected to 3D World, so in a sense she's 'in canon'. I know that isn't what you mean, but just thought I'd mention.

Why wouldn't they appear...

This isn't Vidya James, they wouldn't be under character restrictions...they aren't forced to create all new characters.

Waluigi is pretty out there, even still, considering he rarely shows up in anything. Wario at least has history.

If Wario counts as appearing in the main line of games, so does Daisy. She's the princess of Sarasaland, the main setting for the Game Boy-exclusive Super Mario Land games, who takes the role normally held by Peach for those games. The same games are what introduced Wario and brought about his rise to popularity.

I have to wonder if Illumination will use the voice cast from the games or not. On one hand they might do that considering Disney got Roger Craig Smith, Kyle Herbert and Reuben Langdon to reprise their roles as Sonic the Hedgehog, Ryu and Ken respectively for Wreck-It-Ralph on the other hand they might pull a Lego Ninjago movie and replace the video game cast with a completely cast. I dunno what do you guys reckon?
